Just starting watching Lawn Bowls. What is the purpose of spraying chalk on the bowls? I understand to mark the bowl as a toucher when it hits the jack, but does it have any importance if the jack gets knocked down to the ditch? Greetings from Sweden.

yes, the toucher is live in the ditch - other bowls that are in the ditch are not live, and so do not feature in the count, but the toucher counts even if it is knocked into the ditch.

1. It help bowlers aim and 2. The centre line gets moved periodically to even the wear on the green.
