It still amazes me to watch SpaceX install this extremely sophisticated hardware using rental equipment, outdoors, on a crude concrete pad next to a dirt berm. For forty years I was convinced that this could only happen in massive assembling buildings with purpose built lifts, glossy white floors and in time frames of weeks or months with technicians checking every bolt electronically for micro-defects. The industrial path from what SpaceX is doing now to fully fledged mass production has never been clearer. Sometimes to move forward you need to take a step back.

@Kevin, I agree. However, the Raptors and other critical components are being constructed and tested elsewhere in buildings such as you describe. To me, the draping of the newly-arrived Raptor 42 with well-used but still adequate plastic tarps was visual poetry.

I marvel at its complexity. And the complexity of the whole finalized project. The teamwork from all involved who put their ALL into it. Dreaming, designing, building, testing, failing, learning, re-building testing, success. Always pushing the envelope. I know I'm throwing this all into some kind of poetic observation, and I'm a poor poet. But I can't help but to stand by in awe and watch true greatness going on here. And thanks to all who are putting all this on video and live so we can witness it each day.

@2:12 - The white truck just looks like a 2 axle flatbed with custom platform built for this task. Maybe a Freightliner? The generic name for the vehicle on the right is "Telehandler" or " Telescopic Handler". They are very common in construction and logistics industries. The vehicle with the yellow folding arm underneath SN8 is variously known as a "Hydraulic Lift" (or Pneumatic if it is actuated by air), a "Hydraulic Folding Arm", "Folding Arm Hydraulic Lifting Platform" or some other variation on the theme. Could have a platform for people or other attachment for lifting a load. For the platform version, these and the "Scissor Lifts" which raises later on are sub-classes of "Aerial Work Platforms". Scissor lifts are simple and arguably safer but only suitable when the vehicle can be placed directly under the work area and there is no intervening obstruction. The hydraulic arm variants provide a lot more flexibility for working outside the base footprint and for reaching over obstacles.

The truck appears to fit the “truck, scissor-lift platform, place & installation” variety. The work on the nosecone was to replace the burst disc on the header oxygen tank vent - professionally covered in shiny duct tape common to every HVAC technician’s toolbox.

It's not often you see a change in plans right in the middle of an engine change. In this case somebody probably found that 42 was an engine with a varnish problem. You have to remember they are going through their entire fleet of engines right now to identify engines with the varnish problem and fix them. That takes time, it's not something you can do overnight. I have to say that the fabrication methods have improved radically. The difference in SN8's dome and SN11 is impressive. Much higher quality!

That truck works like a scissor lift (scissor lift trucks) It will either lift seat vans/Lavs and Galleys/carpets and other heavy items to the passenger (loaded and unloaded from the back of the truck) entry door for ease of loading into aircraft. the Snorkel lift is the name of the equipment being used to work on the nose cone. Scissor lifts are being used to work under the rocket. This is everday equipment used by me and every one else who works in the aerospace industry. And yeah everybody wears fall safety equipment just incase ya wanna try and bungy jump! 😁

In the last version of the motor power supply, the vertical line has become much longer. That is, the hydrostatic column of liquid turned out to be much higher and, therefore, the pressure in the area of the bottom and at the entrance to the preburner much more, rather than the previously tested options. After all, the diameter of the vessel does not affect the pressure!

Yup, definitely that's what it looked like, it's position is also correct for the venting we saw when the disc burst on the last test. It's quite narrow so there's not a sudden pressure drop which would cause the tank to potentially buckle inwards.

So what are we thinking are the hurdles before we get to the hop (or is “jump more appropriate here)? I’m guessing pneumatics need a good once over? Will have to static fire new raptor. I’m guessing they’ll static fire from headers at least once more (replacement of burst disk, and melty raptor. Granted, neither were necessarily the tanks faults though). Maybe looking at an early December launch? SN9 will be close in 8s heels at that rate. Thanks so much for the coverage, as always!

@@MrZeegolden SpaceX produces many versions of its hardware never intended for installation. These are collectively referred to as pathfinders. Not all pathfinder hardware gets a serial number, but we had SN7 and SN7.1 which were tank sections tested to failure on purpose. And though I don't have the SN's of the Raptors that were tested to failure, we know that they do this as well. It wasn't long ago Musk tweeted Raptor reached a record 330 bar without going all melty, but it most certainly sustained damage. These articles were never destined for installation. There are far less sophisticated pathfinders as well. Numerous ring sections, bulkheads and nose cones built that will never be installed. They were used only as practice articles for construction techniques.

I’m going to guess that the nose cone work involved resetting a pressure release sensor.(not sure what they call them...burst disc?) Is this what saved SN8 from blowing up? I wonder how complicated it is to attach the raptor engine to the right electronics, fuel lines, etc.? This has to be critical work performed by skilled engineers. It also seems physically demanding. There must be all kinds of back up checks etc....wish someone knowledgeable could fill in the blanks.

Didn't they said there were 50 raptor engines produced? At this rate they would run out of engine right?
@Codysdab

That was a while ago, I'd imagine they're starting to really crank them out now as they get closer to the desired performance goals.

They said they would continue to iterate on the design up to raptor nr 50. After you nail down a final design, production speeds up.

I wonder if they will have to redesign the engines after they figure out why one of them melted down.

@@59seank Unlikely. They've run these things for 90 seconds at 330 bar. It is probably a problem of a similar nature to the one certain merlin engines had recently, some sort of error in the manufacturing.

11:25 is this manifold used to deliver methane from the header tank ?
@GenoLoma
@GenoLoma 4 жыл бұрын
No, from the bottom end of the downcomer pipe, from the main tank which then ports out to the 3 Raptors.. Header tank is at the top of the downcomer pipe, how it remains fully filled, I'm not sure, but probably fuel would flow through it (the header tank) during normal operations, and then once the engines shut down and the vehicle is in space, (or free fall as the 15 k test will aim for), the header tank will be filled and pressurised in preparation for the relighting of the engines for landing.. Truly amazing stuff.. and beyond the pay grade of most of us.. haha
