To answer your question about how they'd catch both craft with one tower. Before they launch they lift the booster onto its mount. Then they lift starship onto the booster. They launch both, send starship around the planet, catch the booster, place it on its mount and prepare to catch starship. They have about around an hour and a half to do this successfully. Starship makes its way back around. If it's clear, they tell it to descend and go back to the launch mount and catch it. IF they catch both, they can choose to place it back on its booster as a show of the completion of the full circle of the launch and landing cycle and readiness to relaunch. If it turns out it can immediately be relaunched, it would be a complete proof of concept to refuel and immediately relaunch the same day. A lot has to go right there though. Not only a complete cycle of launching and catching and remounting, but also things like FAA approval. That's all probably still quite far away from now though.

Well, basically it is. The SLS / Boeing Starliner combo are really just Apollo on steroids with more modern components and computers etc. Same concept, drop the billion dollar booster into the ocean and bring back the capsule only. It's obsolete - the Stainless Steel Starship is the future.

I was at launch 1 and 4. What you’re seeing is nothing compared to what you feel! Every one of those little crackles pulsate through your entire body! Starbase should be the number 1 place for everyone to experience. The beach is beautiful and the ship is so close you feel like you can touch it. I will not miss launch 6

Super Heavy booster is almost twice the mass of Saturn V's S-1C (first stage) booster. So SpaceX just caught a rocket nearly twice the size of S-1C out of thin air. I saw it live, but I'm still struggling to process what I saw! It's a genuine giant leap.

That fire after catch was the vent line that normally connects to the booster quick disconnect on the launch mount to send excess fuel back to the fuel farm. You can see it venting fuel shortly before the landing burn starts. They're venting the line because they have to to prep the booster to refill properly shortly after landing, which is the goal - to relaunch the booster ~60 min after catch. In all honestly, that fire isn't a huge concern because it's not burning very hot, nor intense.

Very likely the hot stage ring that protects booster top end components from Ship's engines when they light up. It's discarded after booster sep from ship (saves weight for landing).

Obviously no ship is coming back to the launch site in less than at least one full orbit; When the booster separates and returns, the ship is still busy reaching its destination and has work to do. It's still unclear when they intend to start landing ships properly, since they would need to overfly populated parts of the U.S. to descend into Starbase or KSC. For Artemis, rapid reuse of the upper stages might not be a priority?

Couple of things; The "fire" is normal, its venting excess heat and fuel. When performing a landing like this, the additional fuel can provide an unstable element to the operation and so they vent the heat and excess fuel, its just some of the fuel will spray onto the outside of the booster, which is why the fire looked chaotic. As for the how, controlled bursts of motion via thrust. Imagine for a moment that you have a blow torch and you can set the intensity of the fire to whatever you like, the only different is that this is calculated, if they were off in their calculations by even a small amount they would of missed the landing, too say this was a "clutch" moment is an understatement, but now they've done it once, they can do it again.

Super Heavy is somewhere around 220 tons dry without the hot stage ring, and probably had 20-30 tons of propellant left in the tanks, so it definitely was not 500 tons. Also, when the booster reaches it's highest boostback velocity at about 26 kilometers altitude, it was doing 4400 km/h, which is a little over Mach 4 at that altitude. Then, when the engines fire to cancel out the booster's energy for the catch, it's doing Mach 1, and decelerates all the way down to 2 km/h by the time the chopsticks make contact.

I heard that it takes something like 3 orbits for the Starship to be realigned for landing at the tower. So there'd be at least a couple hours between a booster landing on the tower to the ship coming back. Still not enough time currently, but I think that's the idea. They'd move the booster then land the ship.

Weight at catch is only a fraction of weight at launch. Most of the weight of a rocket is fuel that is ideally mostly spent when caught.

Remember when Elon said- “building an awesome electric car is hard, but building a factory that builds electric cars is incredibly difficult. He’s taken all he learned about manufacturing (which is an insane amount of knowledge and wisdom), and applied it to manufacturing Space Flight. This milestone today is big, really big, but his factory which churns out spaceships bigger and more powerful than Saturn 5 rockets, this is beyond words cutting edge what humanity can do and so much better than the competition. Wow. Just WOW!

most of tesla factory management is done by chinese. when musk was building the system himself by sleeping at the factory, it was underperforming. it wasn't until his move in China as well as hiring ex-ford consultant on steamlining production, did Tesla manufacturing started improving rapidly. likewise, he hired alot of people who are disillusion by the "launch alliances" to build spaceX, who had the passion but not a boss who support them until musk hired them. the real job of a great CEO is not to figure out how to do it, but to hire the best people. people tend to credit him for entirely wrong thing.
