This must be the first time they've tried to re-light Raptors while going backwards through low-altitude atmosphere at over 1,100KM/H. On the Booster all 13 Raptors lit for the boost back burn, but only 2 lit for the landing burn. I'm sure SpaceX will fix this with IFT-4.

Agreed, but the abnormal rotation, which will be resolved, may explain the later loss of tiles. From what we could see of the ship, there were only 2 or 3 tiles missing by orbit. It is thought that starship can survive a few tiles missing, just not next to each other in a large hole. It also depends on where the tiles are missing.

big win. This is how iterative design works using experimental prototypes, especially when dealing with issues nobody has dealt with before in ways nobody has attempted. Both booster and starship made it further than before. Launching and separation appear to be mostly solved. Controlled reentry for the booster was accomplished, next step is sticking the landing. Starship made it to engine cutoff and reentry, surpassing previous. Now they need to figure out what caused loss of control. I think the are likely a bit disappointed that starship didn’t make it through reentry. All in all a great test flight. Getting closer to complete success and lots of great data in areas that there was none before to be able to push the envelope further next time.

And Starship already did cost around $6 billion and it cannot yet even go around the moon like the SLS did 16 months ago and before it will in 3 years it will have costed close to $9 billion in R&D and testing and many who work at SpaceX come from NASA! As soon as I saw the indicator showing Starship nose-down I knew it was in trouble. The thermal protection wasn't designed to protect it at that attitude. Like the shuttle it has to come down belly first. Curious as to what went wrong.

Maybe, Has to do with fuel line to the thrusters, froze out line, than it tumbled cause the wings couldn't readjust. Still amazing FEAT. All positive data. Had to lower belly dive to help create the compression float/glide.

Starship was already tumbling prior to the scheduled relight (which I'm not sure was ever indicated that it happened.) From what it looks like, they did not have enough control to properly orient for reentry. That it stayed aerodynamically stable enough to make it through what looked like the bulk of the reentry heating shows that at least the active articulation of the fins is enough to "point" it.

Today Elon found out they have no bloody control on reentry, he thought the vessel would naturally lay on its back as the atmosphere grows thicker but he observes total disruption in the air flow. The pitching and rolling of Starship will take years to solve.

SpaceX has 4-5 boosters in production, next one almost ready to go. The next Starship is 1-2 days away from its static fire test. Once the static fire is done, then they just do whatever control upgrades and its ready to fly.

First, they have to figure out what went wrong with both the booster and the ship. That could take some time. There should be some data available from the booster. If everything went as planned but the booster engines failed to light at that speed in the atmosphere they have to radically change the plan. If they don't have data for both, they may have to guess what happened which would make trying to solve the problem more difficult.

@@tiredoldmechanic1791 They fixed the problem with boost back burn , they fixed some of the starship engine problems. Heck from IFT1 to IFT2 and now IFT3 they really improved Raptor reliability.. It will take more flights but SpaceX will figure it out.

This one is 2-3 flights from LANDING (being caught) Falcon 9 took many tries to get their landing reliable and now its been hundreds in a ROW land safely. You would actually be safer riding on a falcon 9 booster landing, than a space shuttle ride.

Congratulations to SpaceX for the incredible strides made with the third test! At the moment, from what is reported in the media, SpaceX should have all the data regarding the descent of the booster until the explosion (it seems) 500 meters above the sea. On this data, they can work and find the necessary improvements to make further progress towards full reuse of the booster (which has a significant value with its 33 engines). For Starship, it could be that venting valves did not function properly, preventing attitude control from a certain point onwards and the proper positioning of the ship before encountering the first layers of the ionosphere. Obviously, if the spacecraft entered inverted and aft, air enters beneath the tiles at 26,000 km/h, and I believe it can only tear them off the hull. Moreover, incorrect venting along with increasing temperature has probably created pressure well beyond the norm in the tanks. The fact that the signal was lost instantly on all three different radio channels suggests an explosion at 65 km altitude. Perhaps the data accumulated up to the blackout are sufficient to understand what happened. A fascinating technological saga! Best wishes for your work.

When Starship reached cutoff, it kept outgassing without stop. Cant imagine that is normal. During reentry it did not appear that the attitude of Starship was under control at all. Hopefully more analysis will shed more light.

@pedrosura - Actually it is normal. Without venting there would be pressure build up in the tanks due to boil off. They utilize these gasses as a means of orientation. Obviously there was a problem with that function and was most likely the cause of the barrel roll and ultimately the loss of the ship.

Tiles Not an easy fix. Atlantis haven't solved that problem/size, but Russian shuttle "Buran" did. Dream Chaser has much thicker irregular tiles and special shape. X37B seems OK, but it took many years and reduced scale. It's a difficult problem, it gets more complex with size and trying to make tiles uniform. Uniform tiles may not be possible. You have to design custom tiles inch by inch. It is a very complicated problem. The shape should be more like a Spaceplane Atlantis or X37B to stabilize re entry. The working model will be much different in shape, more like a plane, but with an option for vertical landing at the end for special military operations and moon landing. For regular space cargo mission just a plane style landing as X37B is ok. Why to complicate and carry more fuel for vertical landing?

Those mach plus rocket interceptor military munitions might be employed to advance a remote camera near an errant splashdown spaceship to record a no longer communicating spaceship. This is important information to obtain. BTW: Elevator music during comms really bites.
