You are so right it does not get old. my parents had taken my sister and I to see several Apollo launches and it was freaking awesome. you cannot believe the power of those F1 engines of the Saturn 5. I'm just bummed out that it's been 60 years basically since the space program and we're still using rockets. I just find it hard to believe that everything else in our lives has been improved, everything but entry into low earth orbit. I find it hard to believe we're still using rockets. It is ice. Large chunks fall off all throughout flight due to the densified propellant (colder than needed to be liquid, which increases density and therefore packs more molecules to be burned per unit of volume). Because the rocket exterior is also the fuel tank walls, ice forms while in atmosphere and due to vibrations falls off all the time, similar to the space shuttle on the pad.

What is that plasticky kind of Foil reflective material.... why doesn't pop with the pressure of the speed of rocket?
@bigrob9663 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the foil around the motor components of the second stage, it is probably aluminized kapton, which is a strong, thermally stable polymer that has had aluminum applied via vapor deposition. It is used as a thermal reflector and barrier for the motor components. At the altitude of second engine start, there is nearly no atmosphere, so there would be very little, if any, visible interaction between it and the air.
@katherinelovelace55023 жыл бұрын
The second stage engine has a thermal blanket over it to reflect excess heat away. The air gets very thin as you ascend into the atmosphere, so temperature control becomes far more difficult. This also means that the foil-like material doesn't have to be very strong, because there is almost no atmospheric drag to rip it off.

SpaceX needs to sell lottery tickets representing how close to bullseye the booster lands. Those with winning ticket get a Starship Mars edition Tesla, runners up a life sized plush doll version of Elon pretending to be Mario. I wonder how many would tune in to watch Musk Touchdown Lotto?

Amazing just thinking about the control loop that takes care of the landing of the boosters… some very clever engineering. I’d like to know how many boosters there are and the number of launches and successful lands

I don't even have to watch these posts any more. SpaceX launches are getting routine now. And that's a good thing.

Why no falling tiles like China? Their launches are much more fun to watch!
@johns16253 жыл бұрын
Chinas stage landings tend to be a bit more tragic before the obligatory attempted cover up. Lol
@room21623 жыл бұрын
Well the main reason is there are no Tiles... and China is not using tiles... You are seeing ICE in most cases due to the cold fuel to power their massively powerful motors. I think you are thinking about the Old Space shuttle that had the tile issue.

What SpaceX competitors? No one else is even in the same class... Did you see the Russian antique launch the resupply mission? They take that rocket out to the pad on a chocho train. The most real life steam punk moment.

Folks, I’ll be 69 years young in August. I watched Neil Armstrong guide Eagle to the moon’s surface and his subsequent deployment down the LEM ladder to history. Trust me when I say that despite that incredible achievement and their bravery, watching this is every bit as heart pounding and thrilling. God Bless America!
