Correction: the Saturn Causeway needs to be widen not because Starship is wider. Saturn V and the Space Shuttle were much wider than Starship; however they were transported by a tracked crawler that used both sides of the Causeway. That system was one-of-a-kind, too expensive to rebuild and maintain. SpaceX uses multi-wheeled SPMT (self propelled modular transporters), which are commercially available; however, they use only one side of the Causeway.

Also how does radiation change the properties of the fabric over time? Let's hope they have already tested these materials on the external exposure facility that has been on ISS for at least a decade. And like the submarine that just imploded on the bottom of the sea, how do the dissimilar material joints hold up under the space environment. New technology is tough. That's why NASA has been so conservative. Unknowns get people killed.

The Fuel Depot Starship will need a lot of extra stuff, like sun shields and pump hardware. Getting the fuel up there is one thing. Pumping it in zero G into the tanker, and then keeping the cryogenic propellants from boiling away or freezing solid is another. It is rather daunting when you think about the details. Almost anything seems simple when you don't think about the details. But nature is all about the details. Nature is the single most important factor when translating "Elon time" into real life time. I think the NASA oversight board is coming to the realization that even though SpaceX is moving fast and building and testing hardware, it is tackling very difficult and untested technologies. That might have been the deciding factor in pushing for a second competitor for the HLS. Sometimes, Elon Musk reminds me of Howard Hughes. Let's just hope that Starship HLS does not turn into Elon's Spruce Goose.

@@zsigmondfeher4624 definitely it does, if you don't accelate at all it float, but when you try to docking one spacecraft with another, you need to come slowly to the spacecraft that doesn't move and stopping before you colide(like on one inch before that, and you need to use rocket propulsion to stop yourself), but if your propellant tanks are partially empty only the rigid shell of your spaceship will stop moving, and the liquid would keep moving and hit like a hammer few seconds later, and bounce back and forward several times, it splash only because of the inertial forces, not like on a earth vehicle (like a tanker truck) because of the combination of gravity and inertial forces.

So you move the ship that needs refueling, not the one with fuel. Or you just put in anti-slosh baffles. To pump the fuel in orbit you could apply gentle thrust (ullage) to settle to fuel to one end and maintain this thrust while pumping. Yes, your orbit changes but you can just change it back after undocking. You're not even bringing up hard problems to solve but ones solved long ago.

It's going to be a lot easier to pump the fuels if the tankers are set up as pairs and spun so as to use artificial gravity effect to get the fuels to the pumps and compressors. Linked together via a centrally located distribution and docking port the set could eventually act like a orbital habitat with some gravity at the central hub for the convenience of visitors and service personnel.

The centrifugal solution appears better in text and drawings than the actual dynamics and physics involved. Whether linked side-by-side, or axially, the more massive body is going to swing the other more around their common center-of-mass. This may kick-start the initial flow of props (from the side, or from the end, respectively for the two configs), but eventually the receiver is going to gain enough mass that the other is getting the more swing-your-partner-round-and-round. At that point the flow stalls and the bodies, tanks, and props form an equilibrium condition: they're all going around a newly-placed common center-of-mass.

The two or four tanks are attached to the central hub via a linked connection through which fuels flow to the central hub for distribution to (or from in the case of a top up operation) the space vehicle. Pumps, compressors etc are located in each module.

Build Starship in Boca Chica, test it with a launch from BC, the booster returns to BC and the Starship 2nd stage makes one orbit then lands at KSC. You've killed two birds with one stone.

Very true, but they are starting with a water landing for the first test because they are not sure that the landings will be successful. A bad landing could "RUD" the whole place not just the booster or starship.

Regarding the inflatable modules: it is incorrect to assert that BEAM was the only inflatable module to be tested in space: in 2006 and then again in 2007, Bigelow Space launched two of their modules into low earth orbit. Both articles completed the full testing regime of 6 months without incident, then an additional 2 years of activity until the avionics failed. To this day, both Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are in orbit, inflated, and while there haven't been a close by inspection of the modules, they are believed to be in a good state.

Excellent thought. I saw a clip on their impact testing. The results were that the inflatables were better at withstanding impacts than hardshelled habitats. This is partly because the fabric flexes more when hit so the impact forces are less. The flex gives the impactor a little more time and distance to come to a stop than a hard shell. force=mass x acceleration

Fact Check. Starship is 9M wide. The Saturn 5 rockets first stage were 10M wide or 33feet wide which is wider then starship. That being said space x is seeking to widen the road

Space X don't need flaps on it's next test flight or 2. Space X is still in testing faze with Starship. Yes they are making great progress. But still testing and qualifications still must go on.

Space X should build a twice as massive interplanetary cargo ship on the ground and then launch the three or four sections, using falcon 9 rockets, assemble on orbit, coupled with the ISS. When fully assembled it can be loaded with double or triple the cargo. The ship could have a smaller fuel tank and less engines, since it won't have to launch from the ground, or land on Mars, just carry passengers and cargo.

Isn't a Saturn V 33ft (10.1m) diameter and is carried on the mobile platform that looks even wider. Unless it's the fact SpaceX uses a different transporter with it's wheels closer together and therefore can't straddle the tracks used for the Saturn V mobile launcher.

Redundancy. Power to weight. Large engines might not scale in the same way. etc etc etc. It might even be that its just cheaper and easier to make a lot of smaller engines then one big one. With rockets its tends to always be a game of tradeoffs.

They now have to spend another Billion dollars on a new launch platform, plus the cost of a new and taller rocket that is NOT reusable just seems like a big waste when they could invest in technology that SpaceX has developed. If they went the route of SpaceX, NASA could launch a lot more missions fro a much lower cost to tax payers.
