Well, this week has been really weird. It's a tail of SpaceX Starbase Equipment Destroyed with them rapidly tearing down Suborbital Pad A (where they have don't Starship static fires in the past). It seems there may be a lot more destruction to come as a second tower at the Gateway to Mars may be coming faster than you think. Massive Site Changes Coming with reconfiguration and head scratching updates around Masseys. Outside that, a bunch of missions and events, some going to plan, but not so for others? One thing for sure, there never seems to be a boring week of space news in
2023.

@MarcusHouse ? The launch pad gets hot, and then shoot water at it. Making vast amounts of steam. And every launch. So, why is SpaceX not capturing that steam and make electricity.????????. Seems a big waste. And Question 2. Could not Megazilla be rigged with a ship counter weigh to help lift ship at lift off ??? Seems like an easy way to save on some fuel. 🤔 What are your thoughts ??

That shtick about the government denying funding to Starlink because of "inability to provide proper service" for rural America is bulls**t. The truth is very likely that they are being lobbied by the various cable and ISP companies that more or less have small monopolies out there in the rurals. I have many friends out in rural America who only have access to the internet via one single company, which often charges high rates for what was considered bad internet speeds a decade ago. Starlink is a huge threat to their control over those parts of the country, and these companies are going to fight to maintain that control.

and how do they do it? via government and the rules that 0.00x% of the populace (lawmakers) come up with to benefit a few at the cost of e rest. It's smart specifications by smart engineers, without greed, graft or corruption in the mix. Specifying hydrogen for the propellant of ANY first stage is just one example of wrong - headed specifications that is guaranteed to explode cost to manufacture. Using *_three_* hydrogen powered boosters is ludicrous. [The Delta IV booster propulsion is provided by three liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen-burning RS-68A engines. Each RS-68A engine produces 312.3 kilo-Newtons (705,250 lbs) of thrust for a combined total liftoff thrust of more than 2.1 million pounds.]

I think the new launch tower at BOCA is definitely going to be a catch only tower. It took six months to build the water suppression system, but it took almost a year to build the launch table (it's highly complex). If it is a catch only tower, you don't need either and can get it up fast. I think the key for it's use will be it's placement. If it is not at the launch site, then it's a catch tower for sure. Protects the launch site and tank farm from being destroyed if catch fails.

I think testing with engines in place enables them to test more things simultaneously. Like, All the fuel supply connections to the fixed and gymballing engines. As they gain confidence on the manufacturing process for the boosters, they do not expect ordinary tank failures thru simple visual and X-ray weld inspection.

Initial cryo tests with the engines installed do suggest increased confidence, but the production rate of Raptors (and apparently low cost) certainly factors into things. I imagine they consider the risk of mishaps damaging the engines acceptably low, especially as such a failure would likely cause sufficient delay that replacement Raptors would not be the limiting factor for testing. Or perhaps Raptor 2 production is over and Raptor 3s are incompatible with the puck in SH v1?

I just heard the Relativity Anon R engine being test fired for about a couple of minutes at Stennis on Friday night. I could hear it from 12 miles (19 km) away over the TV playing. I'm guessing that was what is was, to make that much noise inside a brick house with double glazed windows which are always closed due to the hot and humid climate 8 months of the year. After walking outside to be sure it was Stennis, I could hear the rocket engine over the din of Interstate 12, which is 300 meters from the house. The atmosphere has to be right to hear the engines being tested at this distance.

A truss, even?
@willnelson5692
@willnelson5692 5 ай бұрын
Marcus mentioned these are vertical members. Assuming these are to be installed vertically then what we really have is a truss-column. It is hard to see in detail how these trusses are constructed, but they are quite unique from what is usually seen in the common building structure world. The two "chords" (I-shaped sections) are very different from each other. One is very large and oriented in "weak axis" (their flanges stick out to each side of the truss) to provide self bracing for the chord, which assumes there's no other structural members framing in that might provide the bracing. The other chord is in "strong axis" and is smaller in section, implying attachment of other framing that will serve to provide bracing of the chord. The "web" (diagonal) members are rectangular tubes attached to the chords with gusset plates (common for heavy building trusses).
@matthodel946
@matthodel946 5 ай бұрын
@@willnelson5692 Good point, so it's not a girder, thank you for that clarification. They're certainly the beefiest truss columns I've ever seen! I worked at an architecture office and we did a building with a famous architect, the design cantilevers over a 3-lane street and the main support beam is a single W section. It had to be imported from Belgium because it was so heavy none were made in America. I can't imagine what it's going to support. Space X blows my mind. Cheers.
@imconsequetau5275
@imconsequetau5275 5 ай бұрын
So the strong axis chord might be braced by the building cladding?
@imconsequetau5275
@imconsequetau5275 5 ай бұрын
@@willnelson5692 If Marcus is wrong for once about vertical orientation, and the truss is horizontal; the smaller chord might always be in tension while the larger chord would be relatively stiffer in compression. This might be an isolated horizontal truss (at least during installation) that is going to be the sum of 1/2 or 1/3 of the segments in the yard.

@bryanillenberg
@bryanillenberg 5 ай бұрын
No. The damage from a failed catch will not be "severe", and a catch tower would be very difficult to convert for launch operations. Besides, a catch tower would also need a stripped down OLM to purge the tanks. If it catches ships, then it needs an SQD for the same reason. And by that point, you might as well make it a full launch tower.

6:42 mark. Marcus my fine space fan those, in the building industry and in construction engineering and architecture in general, are called "trusses". They are generally meant for ceiling support. A very common design at its heart, tried and true.

So we have some good things to look forward to for the coming year with space launches. Consistency of production will keep SpaceX on top. We'll be on the moon before we know it, providing the three-letter alphabet orgs make a New Year's resolution to leave SpaceX alone.😊 great update, Marcus.

The government screwed Elon Musk. The FCC ignored the fact that starling's the only existing system that meets the requirements for the rural internet access program. It's one of the most egregious decisions I've ever seen. He should sue.

The FCC didn't claim Starlink had failed to meet the requirements of 100Mbps/20Mbps (they're up to average ~70Mbps at this point), but rather that Starlink *would* fail to meet those requirements by the 2025 deadline, and therefore must be disqualified immediately.

And they're the only company that's being treated this way. They're also the only company that I can get internet from at my house. They will never run cable to my property. Can't even get DSL or dial up. This is blatant corruption. Starlink also doesn't qualify for the low income internet credit. This administration is so corrupt it's unreal.

Over here in Australia Optus is handling the rollout of starlink cellular service; which given the vast swaths of nothing for over 100km in any direction will come in very useful as it eliminates the need for a dedicated satellite phone and/or starlink antenna and will provide 100% 5G coverage for the entire country; not just whatever percentage of populated areas as everyone claims; but true 100% area coverage. And roaming is much easier because wherever you go outside of the polar circles; your normal service goes with you.
