Firstly, in early April, a part of the Starship ring (likely V2) appeared, showcasing many differences from previous versions. Then, in mid-May, a flap was shipped to Starbase, clearly marked as part of Block 2. By mid-July, we witnessed the impressive appearance of the nosecone and payload compartment. Recently, the B15 forward domes also made an appearance.
With the goal of producing six V2 prototypes this year, we can expect production to continue at a rapid pace. Other parts will likely become more visible in the coming months.

As previously mentioned, the nosecone will feature some notable modifications. The first significant change is in the flap system. Elon Musk has revealed that the flap's position will shift towards the leeward side. Previously, the flaps were placed symmetrically, creating a 180-degree angle, but they will now create an angle of about 140 degrees. This adjustment will help the flap avoid direct impacts during re-entry.
Additionally, it appears that the flap has been moved closer to the top of the Ship. This change will likely enhance navigation by pushing the focus of control forward, balancing it with the aft flap.

I think the trailing edge of the flaps will still be a major problem. They have sharp corner edges unlike the leading edges of the flaps which are rounded the sharp edges will get too hot and again cause heat point failure and break up of the trailing edge as before. There is nothing to stop them being rounded like the front edges which would solve the issue.

The shortened payload bay is a temporary compromise just to get the whole starship system working. This means after successfully delivering starlink satellites to orbit and recovering both booster and upper stage, SpaceX will quickly upgrade to the taller starship with a longer payload bay.

@@riskinhos how much added weight is in the beefed up thermal shielding? How much added weight is in the ring between booster and starship? How much weight was added in internal structural supports and baffles? And they may want to increase the fuel/oxidizer in order to increase margins or slow the reentry/landing down more, just to increase odds of a success. All that added weight must be subtracted from the payload. It makes sense to operate starship with smaller payload until it is proven operational. Then after the design is proven operational, to improve it and get back the payload size.

At some point they will scrap the remaining V1s, they are an obstacle to the next phase. If they build one production Raptor 3 a day they are good to go in a couple of months. Imo.

Reader below has a comment so correct it hurts. I hope the SpaceX engineers see this. I too have doubts about the "catch", since if you are yawing then only ONE arm will support the weight. That might lead to a jamming of the buffers or dampers, and cause the whole body to oscillate sideways without actually being able to center into the stand. Unless the tower can withstand these sideways loads, it may actually fall over sideways. Hopefully, the arms can accommodate both a 1D Sway and a 1D Heave on the tower, during the final burndown. Unless they get the rocket tube well stabilized vertically before the grab, this could be a disaster. Prior landings have been pretty sketchy in that regard. Seeing a lot of 2D nutating at the bottom, before touchdown. Not a good sign, and needs steering nozzles at the top of the rocket tube.

The shift to the "leeward" side also allows a buffer surface or block to be emplaced, to avoid the burn-through of the joint interface, like the one they nearly lost during re-enetry. By the way, most non-sailors have no clue about "windward vs leeward vs portward vs starboardward", just sayin. Maybe needs further explanation. And also Yaw, Roll, Pitch, Heave, Sway, Surge, etc, etc.

No. None of the current second stages have a functioning cargo bay. Plus the RCS system said second stage has is minimal at best; it utterly lacks the control capability to dare getting close to the ISS. Add to that the fact that none of the Superheavy vehicles are crew rated, never mind certified. So it would take some sort of automation and robotic arm that doesn't exist to even attempt it. Then there's the fact that none of the hardware has even completed a full orbit of the Earth, never mind moving from one orbital shell to another.

@@wesleybeaver with respect you don’t seem to be a Space X fan , I must admit I am a bit bias toward Space X , I honestly think it is the best launch system ever for invention and innovation alone , putting the last fifty years of space launches almost look like the Middle Ages , the competition are looking so desperate that they resort to trying court action to try and slow development of Space X , NASA was stuck with government over site and politics which held them back free competition causes innovation and invention , proof being aircraft development slowed to a crawl as the private smaller companies where swallowed up by their competitors reducing competition for high priced contracts , making innovation disappear as they focused on customer requirements as opposed to innovation . @@richardwarlord It's more a matter of I'm not a fan of technobullshit and cults if personality. The actual facts are that SuperHeavy is not flight rated. It is not human rated. It has carried exactly 0.00kg of cargo -anywhere-, never mind to orbit (which it has yet to complete even one full orbit). The ONLY reason that Musk and Bezos and at least half a dozen other rocket start ups are where they are now is because NASA, being taxpayer funded, gave them the information it obtained in the race to the Moon, allowing them to bypass the decades of learning and experimentation NASA had to do. Without that data, Musk =MIGHT= have managed to cobble something Falcon-ish together by now. Might. And there would have been a lot of explosions in the process. I hear all the bs about Artemis being soooo expensive, but Space X is sooo cheap! Again, the facts are that Artemis sent the unmanned Orion to the Moon first shot. One bird, one shot, there and back. Musk's method is build the actual vehicle. Then build a second, shoot it into orbit, and make it into a gas station. Then shoot 10-12 missions into orbit just to fill said station for use in the next single mission. Then launch the actual mission into orbit, which is its limit operationally, refill the vehicle, -then- send it out of orbit and on to the Moon. Add the costs of those 11-13 shots just to get ONE vehicle to the Moon, and the cost spread is far more competitive. Never mind the fact that NASA's culture is 'Safety First'. A capitalist's culture is 'as cheap as possible; if I get away with it it was safe enough. Besides, that;s what insurance is for.'

At full speed, Ship would be going 18x faster than Earth's rotation and to come back to the ground, it has to lose all that velocity. It's not about engine power, as it obviously has more than enough to speed up to 18,000 mph in just a few minutes, but it's about the size of the fuel tank - it would have to be at least double the size, probably more, to be able to slow right down and basically hover on down to the ground.
