Spain's major role in world affairs took place much prior in history (beginning in the 15th/16th centuries), so by recent years and decades, the country's time as a global player had effectively passed. Spain's true and definitive demise came in the year 1898, when it fought a major war against the United States over Cuba. As you can imagine, the US was victorious in that conflict; and the War of Cuba, as it is known here, left a deep scar in Spain's politics and culture. It was the clearest sign that Spain's major role in world affairs was no more, as it was a harsh defeat, so it began a period of introspection mainly dictated by changes in its society that would culminate in the 1936 - 1939 Civil War. Not to say that Spain didn't have anymore role from 1898 onwards, as it had a brief colonial period in northern Africa; but it was surely greatly diminished from what it used to be. In fact, one of the reasons the Spanish didn't consider intervening in the First World War was that the War of Cuba had left the Spanish Navy extremely damaged, so it had no many means to even thinking of joining. And we could say we are fortunate, because considering that both the Spanish political elite and society were mainly consevative, there is a great chance we would have joined the Central Powers, the losing side, so we avoided that. In the case of the Second World War, the story is pretty much the same, as the country couldn't think of joining the conflict because of the recent Civil War it had been fighting, which ended on the very year the World War began. In fact, although the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, partially owed its position to Hitler and Mussolini, he nevertheless made as much as possible to hinder German efforts of making Madrid to join the war after that, as the country was devastated. Finally, in regards to the Cold War, Spain was lucky in the sense that, because of its geography, it was relatively isolated from central Europe, where the Iron Curtain was located, so the tensions of that era were not felt that much. The country did however aligned with the US, and granted them access to set military outpost in different parts of the country (which still stand today), in exchange of international recognition of the dictatorship and monetary support. Interestingly, it happened that, very close in time, the Portuguese, Spanish, and Greek dictatorships fell and the three countries transitioned to democracy and entered the EU and NATO at almost the same time.

The "most are mixed" claim is a lie since most men in Latin American can't even grow a beard due to having no Spanish blood at all. Most Spaniards, not all, can grow beards. If Spain committed a genocide, Latin America would look like the US: few Natives anywhere. Yet look at Honduras where I'm from. Most are Lencas, Miskitos and Mayans. There is a puny Spanish minority in a few towns. One time in Miami I asked landscapers about a job, and they asked me where I was from. They were Native American Hispanics. When I said "Honduras" with my big black beard, one of them was offended, saying: "You can't be Honduran! You look like you're from Iraq!" And then there are the idiot gringos who believe Mexico is in South America.

I would really love to see Caspian Report do a deep-dive on the recent history of Rwanda. From violence and genocide in 1994, to safety and economic growth today. It blows my mind that Rwanda has a similar crime-rate to South Korea and Japan, two countries considered the safest in the world. On top of that Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, is considered one of the cleanest cities in the entire world. Plus the country has pivoted from foreign-aid dependent to self-sufficient within 30 years. I’d love to see this channel talk about the details and geopolitical aspect of Rwanda’s success. Countries like Rwanda and Botswana fascinate me so much, unique shining examples of what African countries can achieve with good leadership and a rock-solid goals.

An African man told me this one time: "If you want to help Africa out of poverty, don't give African governments more money. They will just horde it and it will not trickle down to where it's needed. You have to invest in Africa's people, in other worlds buy African goods, perches from African industries and markets." What Spain is doing here, investing in trade with Africa; if executed properly, could lift billions of Africans out of poverty and make Spain very wealthy again at the same time. This time the right way. Not with swords, cannons and ships, but with paper, pens and dollars.

Good video, just one comment. You seem to make Spain sound like an unwilling or unenthusiastic member of the EU, when in fact Spain is one of the most pro-European countries in the EU. And when you speak about the EU restricting Spain’s spending capabilities and access to funding, I’m not really sure what you mean there, before Spain entered the eurozone the government could mostly only finance itself though printing money because the Peseta was very volatile, and the market had little to no confidence in Spanish public finances. So basically, Spain's economic problems are self made and if Spain hadn't entered the EU and Eurozone the country would be much worse off. P.S. It's not only the policy of Spain,Portugal is in on it, it's true Spain is not has aligned with European geopolitics because geography means the Iberian Peninsula is very well defended. The toughest recently has been the trade deal with Mercosur, those are countries of big significance for both Iberian nation, and despite the differences between the two nations the economies are similar, the interest in Africa are aswell, Spanish companies have acquired interest in Portugal, portuguese companies already have footholds in Africa, it's been a main policy goal of Portugal since the eighties with the Portuguese speaking nations.

What I want, is for Africa to actually be able to negotiate and profit from their own land, work, and resources, and not have to conform and rely on foreign influences.. even the ones that have settled in Africa for generations at this point. Africa has some SERIOUS potential, and people are starting to see... I just hope the people (native to Africa)... which... @@jihadityrone2197 I doubt the US will boggle itself down in Africa where they have very little influence. You can even hear Kissinger warning against US engaging in competition against China in Africa. It's already engaged in competition with RF in Eastern Europe, and with China in East Asia and the Pacific. Not to mention it's losing ground even in it's backdoor in Latin America, and it's almost been pushed out of the Middle East. @@nocomment5705 Economic involvement is not the same as military involvement the US failure in Somalia was not due to economic involvement but rather an arrogant belief that they could capture their target Aideed immediately with zero casualties. The US has the largest clout within Africa I’m not sure what you mean by little influence, although China greatly spends much more on development schemes within the continent recent studies have shown that in 18 African nations most respondents placed the two nations on similar positions (afrobarometer.org/sites/default/files/africa-china_relations-3sept20.pdf), asked about their perceptions of the economic and political influence of various countries, 59 percent of African respondents viewed China somewhat, or very, positively and 15 percent viewed China somewhat or very negatively. The comparable numbers for the United States were similar: 58 percent and 13 percent. The same study reported that, when respondents in 18 African countries were asked to name the best national model for development, 32 percent cited the United States and 23 percent named China. With moderate American spending within the region the US influence can be greatly enhanced not to mention influence goes beyond just cash schemes, the affluent African middle class have been known to send their children to schools within both nations for education and with American universities ranking the highest within the world I’d argue this would be a clear success for America.

I wish it worked that way. But no it's just soft imperialism. Corporations, global finance and the intelligence agencies have taken over the role of standing armies. One party has the significant advantage and they will most likely take advantage of it. Both China and Russia aren't colonizing africa. Russia and China are here to do business in the continet. China is investing in the continet to build new infrastructures such as roads, schools, hospitals, railways and buildings. Russia is here in the continent to do peacekeeping missions in conflict areas especially in the central african republic. However both China and Russia are trading partners and closet friends. During the european colonization of africa, the following that occurred on the continet was: 1.Partitioning of africa and creation of countries such as somalia, zambia, cameroon, namibia,angola, mozambique and so on. 2.Establishment of colonies. 3.Brutality and forced labor. 4.genocides,massacres and forced conversion of african people into christianity and catholicism. 5.Adoption of new technology and introduction of western culture.

What annoys me is that any small European country can come up with a grand strategy while even the largest countries in Latin America seem to be living as if the world restarted during the night everyday and nothing long-term mattered
@MrCamille9999

Well Latino American countries are generally much poorer and have a lot more of serious domestic issues to deal with before they can pretend to instigate greater international plans (generally when they do stuff like that it's more on a regional level). And even when it comes to Spain, I have a hard time seeing how they could possibly compete with France and China in Africa considering the former is already established there, controls vast amount of Africa's money and speaks the same language as a lot of Africans and the later has 10 times it's GDP (and that's not mentioning all of Spain domestic issues).

great piece, as always. you forgot to mention brazil's influence in some western african countries. in angola, for instance, brazil has had a monopoly of building infrastructure projects for the government for years. the large brazilian construction, agricultural and oil corporations have a long history of exploiting the african public contracts market and a longstanding relationship with their governments and brazilian governments as well.

@lospaquitos1460
@lospaquitos1460 3 жыл бұрын
@@gohanssj48 This is true. Brazil has lost a lot of influence in the past years there. Also, it is quite interesting to observe that the near-monopoly relations with Angola, for instance, have been forged between a right-wing military dictatorship and a communist military dictatorship back then. What I referred above, though, is mainly about Brazil's large construction multinational companies, and their projects are ongoing in Latin-America, Africa, North-America, and even Asia. They do generally perform better when the Brazilian government does a better job at lobbying for them during international negotiations, but they are not entirely dependent on the government. So, it does not matter that much whether Brazil will put it's house in order soon or not, such companies are still highly engaged with businesses' partnerships elsewhere.
