Spain’s Prime Minister says he will not resign after allegations against wife | BBC News

Pedro Sanchez has said he will stay on as Spain’s prime minister, after days of speculation over his future.
A court opened an initial enquiry into his wife over corruption claims, and after Mr Sanchez cancelled official engagements, many expected him to either resign or call a confidence motion.
But instead, he denounced the claims as a harassment campaign by right-wing media, after the accusations levelled against Mr Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez were brought against her by the organisation Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), led by a man linked to the far-right called Miguel Bernad.
A series of demonstrations were held around Spain over the weekend, calling for the prime minister to continue in his post - though members of the opposition were less supportive, with Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the opposition Popular Party (PP)'s leader of the Madrid region accusing Mr Sánchez of being "shameless".

Exactly. Whoever thought that he could resign knows NOTHING about Pedro Sánchez and his fantastic entourage of ministers and ex-ministers under investigation for corruption during the first COVID lock-down. While thousands of Spaniards were dying, some of his ministers were making business with cheap and unusuable facemasks that cost 10 times their actual price. If justice hasn't gone any further is because all of them still enjoy political immunity, so can only be investigated by the Supreme Court, and for that to happen it'll take years of investigations at lower courts. Sánchez CAN'T resign, and less call for elections, because all his corrupt team would risk losing their precious immunity. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if in the next elections he pushed for his wife being a candidate herself (not a main one) so she gets that juicy politcal immunity, avoiding justice.

Has it though? He can't run the country without enough supporting votes in the Parliament. He pass the amnesty law ONLY because he was promised by separatist that they would support him with their votes, but the day before passing it they made it clear they won't support him unless he makes more and more outrageous concessions. He passed the amnesty lay anyway, since he had put himself deep in that swamp by telling the Spanish people for months that he now thinks it had to be passed because only that amnesty could bring peace withing Spanish society and blah blah blah. He had been super enthusiastic about the amnesty for months but the "historic" day he passed it he look very upset and didn't even have a word after the approval voting in the Parliament. He even ran away the chamber so he could avoid questions. This is a good example that Sánchez can't rule the country right now, since he doesn't even have enough supporting seats at the Parliament.

Pedro Sánchez doesn't even have that much of a real support from voters. He's never surpassed 8 million votes. That's what someone as unpopular as Joaquín Almunia did back in the 2000, and he was ceased because of those bad results. Now 8 millions votes with Sánchez is not considered a massive failure anymore, because he's actually successful at making outrageious deals even with the Devil in order to get enough MPs support to be elected as the Prime Minister in the Spanish Parliament. That's the only thing he's actually really good at, and he doesn't care about anything else, not even his country. As long as he is the PM, it's alright for him.

His wife has been getting public-funded contracts for her own private company since he was appointed as Prime Minister back in 2018. It's only been discovered now due to a report from one of the other applicant companies that has proven that Sánchez's wife got the deal even though her proposal was the worst one out of several (proposals pass a scoring process to make things fair and with transparency). Basically they gave her the worst score on the goals her proposal had to achieve but on the "subjective" section of scoring the jury randomly gave her the maximum score possible in order to surpass her rivals, which is obviously shady.

As it did happen in Portugal we can see, here, the instrumentalization of justice by right-winged movements. Unfortunately, for Portugal, those efforts made the government collapse. Kudos to Sanchez for holding on and grabbing the bull by the horns.

Holding our politicians accountable for corruption isn't instrumentalising justice, rather, it's the most basic right that we have as a society. That they can just side-step it like this is a total travesty.
