Princess Leonor, heir to the Spanish crown, swears loyalty to the constitution on her 18th birthday, a legal milestone that royal watchers hope will turn the page for the monarchy after several years marred by scandal. Her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and younger sister Sofia watched on as Leonor took the oath before a joint session of both houses of parliament. When she ascends to the throne, Leonor will become Spain's third full-fledged queen (instead of a queen consort), following Joanna of Castile in the 16th century and Isabella II in the 19th century.

She has no responsibility whatsoever!!! I had a real job at that age, when lots of people depended on me!! If I did something wrong, the whole building site would have come a stop and lots of money would have been lost. I was studying at the same time. I got up at 5 am every day and sometimes I had to work all the way through the night and no one even said thank you. We weren't paid overtime as this is common in architecture/ building industry. You go home to have a shower and you go back to work. I cannot believe that we still keep these royal families in the 21st century.

I don’t know how much a King/ Queen can do though in Spain, I’d say it’s more the prime-minister that does the leading, at least for The Netherlands it is. The government is democratically chosen, the King is not so here. Therefore he has a bit more of a ceremonial function. Though I do think it’s nice they have this function for a long time so that have a lot of experience and can share that with the ministers.

Y con su linaje tradicional representa la permanencia de la Nación española a lo largo de la historia. Por otro lado es importante recordar lo inestable que fue España durante sus dos repúblicas, cuando no había un rey moderador y cada partido atentaba por arrastrar el país a su ideología. Es un papel muy arduo en España. Tanto es así que Amadeo se Saboya abdicó ya atrás en el s.XIX por considerar a España como un país ingobernable 😂

That's so funny. It's a pity you don't understand Spanish. She is speaking in somewhat of a declaratory way because she's making an oath with legal significance for the constitution. This is super significant in Spain after their 20th century history of the Spanish Civil War and the long rule of Franco who'd used torture, murder and incarceration to transform Spanish society into a fearful non-democratic state. Democracy is very much valued these days, obviously. Franco did what Trump is doing now, bit by bit, Trump is breaking down the confidence in democratic institutions like courts, schools, Congress, the FBI, just basically in all socially useful social institutions. Above all, neo-fascists like Trump break down faith in science, facts and the truth. It's the only way they can get control.
