Salamanca, a city in western Spain lies on several hills by the Tormes River. Its Old City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It is one of the most important university cities in Spain; formal teaching has existed since 1130. The city was founded in the pre-Ancient Rome period. During the 16th century, the city reached its height of splendour. During the devastating Spanish Civil War the city quickly went over to the Nationalist side and was temporarily used as the de facto headquarters for the rebel faction.
