Good afternoon Your work is fascinating! The oak tree turns from an ugly duckling into a graceful swan! After finishing, there is no way to take your eyes off the shine of the oak! What gives oak such shine? Thank you! Alexander from Russia from Siberia.

Beautiful peace of art . Very good work. It’s a good idea you mentioned at the beginning regarding the cracked. I use tp. Works great. Tp is thinner and I use 2-3 layers and use clear glue ( Buy by the gallon) and wrapping it for a week. The crack is practically almost a well connected line. Be safe.

Kim, I just happened to go down to all your previous work and noticed that I have not seen this one. I was shocked! I do like oak but hate to work with it because it’s so hard and tough on the tools. However I have never ever seen an oak piece as beautiful, as remarkable as this one. It must have been a wonderful feeling to turn such a majestic piece. That’s how I feel when I get a beautiful piece. I feel so honoured to turn them. Then once finish well you know, I gave them away. Until I found out that they would sell them away. I’m very hurt and disappointed. Now I pile them up in my basement. Enough of that. Kim I’m very happy for you. Your work is incredibly beautiful and I love your sense of humour and overall personality. Take care, be safe and God Bless you girl.

The dull spots are a soft area that absorbs the finish. Also lacquer is not a good sealer. Use a thinned or a spray shellac or a water based polyacrylic sealer. Beautiful bowl. Love the grain. Nice work. I subbed too.

Kim, couple of tips, the first is if you use a lot of CA glue (super glue) you can get pints or quarts of it on ebay or amazon and if you didnt know baking soda makes super glue dry instantly like a rock so if you have to make a repair quickly just put super glue from your new big bottle on a crack or hole a sprinkle baking soda on it and wham you can sand it or whatever! Good luck like your vids.

I love spalting, but that piece is NUTS!! I can't get over the figure and colors! What a find! And, obviously, nice job turning it. The shot of the bowl upside down at 37:21 reminds me of Jupiter, with the spalting being the cloud lines and the red knot being the red storm. I do suspect the wax was the reason for those dull spots. With friction, it's going to liquify and melt into the wood, and it'll resist most finishes after that. As for the wobble, I would say it's down to wood movement after turning. The faceplate shouldn't be the issue, since the rebate you turned on the bottom was done while the bowl was spinning in the round and was true. I've had bowls do this to me before, once the interior mass was removed. Some woods seem more susceptible to this than others, and it likely has something to do with moisture as well, but with a crotch piece like that there's a lot of stored tension going in at least two different directions, which would also work against you. It just becomes part of the character of the piece. Again, beautiful piece! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Gorgeous piece of spalted oak, Kim, and you made a beautiful bowl from it. As for the dull spots, I think that may actually be the punkier places that absorbed the finish so that it won't shine. Any friction polish (like OB) is a building finish and the shine is a result of the heat from friction. If it soaks in and doesn't build, it won't shine. Billy
@KimTippin5 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Yeah, the shine wasn't so much on the black part of the spalting. Thanks for the info and the kind words!
@samesaw Жыл бұрын
Very beautiful grain showing
@boooshes5 жыл бұрын
I agree with Billy Burt below. When using that type of finish, the matte areas are usually due to the finish soaking so much there isn't any build. Sometimes I will apply 15 or 20 coats of a shellac-based finish before the spots gloss up well. Waxing can help ,but it won't fix the real problem. You got a nice result from hard work on this one.

I have the same issue with OB shine juice on spalted wood. I believe the spalted areas, being of a softer nature, absorb the finish therefore creating the "matte" finish that you spoke of. I think a sanding sealer may help with this but have not tried it yet. Good luck and Thanks for the video

Kim, this is my first of your videos and I enjoyed it. Your bowl turned out beautifully. I have a bunch of spalted oak like that and had to laugh when you were pulling that worm out of the hole. Can't count how many times I've done that. Some might not realize how challenging it is to work with oak that punky but if you can pull it off you get beautiful results. I've even made some pens out of it and when you get that small you really have to be careful, it will sometimes just shatter into pieces. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Rob! Yeah, I made bracelets that just snapped. The stuff is so chippy and unpredictable. When I started to learn how to turn I got a bunch of wood for my sister's burn pile Oh, it was all spalted Oak. So the very first would I learn to turn was spalted Oak. I didn't have any other kind of wood to turn at the time, so I just made it work. Start off at the hard stuff we go from there. LOL
