the definitive version of the beautiful song. I just love Jim Mc Cann's voice, soft and powerful at the same time.

Born and raised in San Francisco but both my parents are from Ireland and every time I go back I play this song as I’m leaving and I cry like a baby, hits me in the soul somewhere deep. 🇮🇪🇮🇪

I absolutely love Jim McCann. He was a wonderful singer. It's so odd but gratifying watching a Dubliners video with neither Luke or Ronnie taking center stage. To my shame, I sometimes forget how incredibly talented the other members of the band were! This was a beautiful reminder.

His version of grace is the only one I'll listen to. His voice just suits certain songs.

I'm here for a rather sad reason. I was watching a crime story about a guy who killed his wife. Anyway, in the end, they had video of her singing at her brother's wedding.... this song. As soon as she sang the little I heard, I looked for it immediately and here I am. Haunting, beautiful, sad song 🌹RIP Rachel Callaly

Last night as I lay dreamin' Of pleasant days gone by Me mind bein' bent on rambling To Ireland I did fly I stepped on board a vision and I followed with the wind Till first I came to anchor at The cross at Spancil Hill It being the 23rd of June The day before the fair Where Ireland's sons and daughters And friends assembled there The young, the old The brave and the bold came Their duty to fulfill At the parish church near Clooney A mile from Spancil Hill I went to see my neighbours to See what they might say The old ones were all dead and gone The young ones turning grey I met the tailor Quigley He's as bold as ever still He used to mend my britches when I lived in Spancil Hill I took a flying visit to my one and only love She's as white as any lily As gentle as a dove She threw her arms around Me, saying "Johnny, i love you still" She is Nell, the farmer's daughter The pride of Spancil Hill I dreamt I held and kissed her As in the days of old Saying, "Johnny, you're only joking As many's the time before" But the cock, he crew in the morning He crew both loud and shrill I awoke in California Many miles from Spancil Hill

I'm always looking for new material for my gigs and try my best to do justice to those who came before , both with how well the song is played and the writers (when possible.) We're all musicians standing on the shoulders of giants, and owe them a great deal. This performance of this song will be my measure.

IT'S VERY HARD FOR A DUBLINERS LIKE MYSELF TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE MANY GREAT SONGS OF THE DUBLINERS RECIEVE SO FEW LIKES. ONE WOULD HAVE EXPECTED THAT APART FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD, PARTICULARLY FROM EVEN JUST A HAND FULL OF COUNTRIES LIKE UK, USA, AUSTRALIA, ONE WOULD HAVE NOT JUST THOUGHT BUT EXPECTED, THETHE PEOPLE OF DUBLIN ALONE MUCH LESS IRELAND ITSELF WOULD BE POSTING A LOT MORE LIKES FOR THE INDISPUTABLY GREAT SONGS OF THE DUBLINERS. IT THEREFORE MUST BE SAID, MU CH AS IT PAINS ME TO HAVE TO DO SO, THAT TODAY'S DUBLIN MUSIC LISTENERS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. SO IF YOU HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO READ THIS PLEASE, PLEASE SET ABOUT HELPING TO CORRECT THIS IN EVERY WAY YOU CAN. THANK YOU. JACK

Ronnie was some time off the Dubliners going solo when through Luke they invited Jim to the band. I think between 1974 - 1979. That's why Ronnie is not in this video.
