J, this was THE ballad of the eighties, written by band member Gary Kemp and containing one of the best lines ‘Listening to Marvin (Gaye) all night long’. The band was made up of school friends from North London (UK) Gary Kemp and Steve Norman, Gary’s brother Martin, John Keeble on drums and Tony Hadley, with his smooth expressive voice. Part of the New Romantics movement of the early eighties, which was an answer to Punk music, they were as famous for their take on fashion as they were for their music. This was the band that everyone else was up against and their songs helped to define the decade here in the U.K. Listen to Heaven is a secret, Gold, Chant no.1, Round and round and my favourite, Through the barricades. Lots of great music and great memories!🥂

Over a hundred bands are classified in the new wave genre. I was a young teenager at the time and although I lived in a communist country in the Balkans, I grew up with this music. Then new wave bands appeared in my country as well. Great bands and great songs have been created on our domestic music scene.

The 'Second British Invasion', as it's known, began with The Human League and their massive hit 'Don't You Want Me', which was a US number one in 1981 in both the US and UK. From then until the end of the decade UK acts dominated the US music charts. Of all the UK acts though, Phil Collins was the biggest success, spending more time in the US top 40 than any other American *or* British act.

Trivia (if I am not mistaken) - "Spandau" is a type of German machine gun (MG08) widely employed during WW1. When allied soldiers rushed the German positions, being peppered by the guns - they would have to do the "Spandau ballet".

@boombaby17693 жыл бұрын
@@jarls5890 Correct, Spandau is the name of a district in Berlin, the machine guns were produced there, therefore the name. But the name of the band had no political intention, it was just a friend of the band who saw these words as a graffiti on a toilet in a Berlin nightclub and they just thought it sounded cool.

Martin Kemp was a villain in an episode of Highlander. His character was a veteran who had a violent childhood with an abusive over religious father named Alfred Cahill who was killed by a pimp while trying to murder a prostitute. He then woke up as a new immortal where series hero Duncan MacLeod found him and attempted to teach him about his immortality but he was so insane he believed that he was an angel chosen by God to kill whores and thought Duncan was the arch angel Gabriel until he started to believe him an agent of the devil. It was a good episode. Season 1. You can find the whole series on Tubi. It featured quite a few musicians/singers mostly as immortals. Including Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals), Roger Daltrey, Vanity, Joan Jett, Sheena Easton and others I can't think of off the top of my head
