Have you tried it with brooms? When I do this trick I get an old fashioned straw broom and step on the bristles, pushing it against the table. Move the edge of the tin just barely over the edge, pull back let go and the tubes and tin go flying straight at the audience! It creates a much more satisfying bang.

Inertia is a really poor choice of explanation of anything in physics. For example, in the video around 2 minutes Steve says that inertia holds the egg in place. That implies to those who did not learn physics in a lot of detail that something is holding the egg in place. There is nothing holding the egg in place and nothing pushing/pulling on it except for the Earth. The point of this demo is that there is no force on the egg aside from the Earth and the egg pulling on each other. If you think of the definition of inertia, you'll see that mass is inertia and explaining this by saying that the reason the egg does not move with the pie pan is mass you'll see that inertia is a really bad way to explain anything. The person could not understand anything and use inertia as a cover for their lack of knowledge.
