I’m an Englishman living in Almaty, and spent time in Odesa, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Bishkek and Moscow…and I can say that’s just how it is. Looks grim and is pretty grim but it’s nothing too ghetto. As a Romanian born and bread in Bucharest :D - Ferentari is not a suburb, it is a neighborhood. I think there's some political and economy implications. A suburb would be administrated by a local mayors office. Ferentari is administrated by the Bucharest General City Hall and also the 5th District City Hall. The 5 district also administrates one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city - Cotroceni. - 5:49 we have some even older trams (the Tatras) still woring on different lines :D - 7:33 - that long ass tin pipe is either an exterior garbage shoot, or a chimney tower for a restaurant located at the ground floor. If it's a restaurant they are oblidged by law to release the smoke above the building, and not into their windows :) - 10:51 - many of the residents in those buildings are drug users and ex-cons, illiterates, people who have turned their back to the system and the system turned its back to them. They live day to day, doing oddjobs to survive (foraging scrap metal, petty crime and so on) . Unfortunately these people exist in many countries and a city as big as Bucharest will naturally attract them. I hope you enjoyed your time in Bucharest :)
@nicolaeionescu6538 Жыл бұрын
The General City Hall only administrates protected areas (Ferentari is not one of them) and main avenues. I think it lands on District 5 entirely. Everything else is just spot on. Too bad this area got stuck in time, it has been like this since forever.

Poverty and decay in that particular neighbourhood? For sure Very dangerous? Not really and you can take this from someone born, raised and who lived in Bucharest for 35 years. For 5 years I've been living in Berlin and I can tell you that everytime I'm going to certain areas of the city I have to look over my shoulder and keep a suficient amount of room between myself and other dodgy looking people on the street so that I can avoid any potential stabbing. Also being extra careful not staying too close to the ledge of the subway stations lol. Overall, it's 10x more dangerous here than in any area you can find in Bucharest, Romania or in most of eastern Europe for that matter, where the worst that can happen to you is to get robbed and maybe receive a couple of slaps and even that can be avoided with a bit of street smarts and common sense. Here, in Berlin, you can actually get killed. Don't even get me started on the possibility of a terrorist attack which is 100x higher in any large city in western europe than in eastern europe.
@dorotak-k8211 Жыл бұрын
Exactly my thoughts. I'm from Poland living in UK and I only found out that actually Poland is much safer, after I moved out. I never realized that before as the narration of the western media is the oposite. E.g. you don't get to see much poverty or dangerous stuff in the town centres in easter parts of Europe - it's more in the neighbourhoods (with mostly locals living there, bit poor, alkohol, theft etc.) It's the oposite in UK (plus some rough neighbourhoods or streets too).

You’ll find this type of brutalist architecture all over the eastern block of Europe. Some of these places might even not be too bad but they just look gloomy and unsafe. I think you’ll be fine as a tourist, the mafia usually just leaves tourists alone because their business model isn’t robbing tourists but racketeering and all the other traditional criminal forms of generating income. The only place I’ve ever felt unsafe was in Casablanca, Morocco. When you have groups of 10 men following you asking for money, then getting on a bus full of football hooligans, it’s definitely a bit intimidating.

this is not the usual look of Romanian neighborhoods. I live in Romania, one of the safest places you can live in Europe. A few years ago Bucharest was the safest European capital, I think it's around there now. I can walk those streets, no sweat and is not that big of a deal, simply because is not that dangerous. Granted, you're a foreigner, and you don't really know the place, language etc. But not that bad mate. That slum in Barcelona you showed us, was way worse.

Ever heard the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover", I think this is an example of that.. The place looks bad but the people are probably good people that are just doing what they can to live and get by. When you're born in that environment it's all you know. To outsiders it looks bad but to them its home. There will always be good and bad people, No matter where in the world you go. If you go looking for trouble you'll find it.

bucharest is made of 6 sectors. every sector has a mayor + the general mayor for the entire city. every election since the revolution of '89 for that sector's mayor job was a money laundry. they where never looked after & ot became what you can see now: poverty, filth, abuse. some organizations create programs (with the help of usual ppl donating money) about health, they screen movies, music.. for the kids especially. it's a sad situation😢

I lived in Romania for a year. 6 months in Bucharest and 6 months in a village 3 hours west, Sinesti. I remember accidentally getting on the wrong bus when leaving work and ended up in that district. I had to wait for the next bus. It's not bad during the day but don't walk thru there at night by yourself. Romanians not from there don't even walk through there at night. To be honest, I'm surprised you were not robbed of your camera. Thank you for everything you do. 🥰

Though that Romanian hood looked old and neglected, people there did not look threatening compared to hoods here in America. If you were to come to downtown San Francisco a few weeks ago, you would see tons of dangerous druggies living in tents and cardboard boxes on public sidewalks totally zoned out and for sure some even harass you. It wasn't until last week when Chinese president Xi visited SF that the mayor finally spent the money to clean up the streets, but prior to that it was rough.

In fact, it's a myth, Ferentari has some unkempt streets, full of waste, but they want it to stay that way to generate a negative example. Things could be easily solved with fines and the intervention of the gendarmerie. Ferentari is luxury next to the suburbs of Marseille, Paris, Berlin, Brussels and other Western cities. Did someone do something to you or touch you?

Thumbs up for your videos. In my opinion, what gives your videos value is your perspective which was constructed from, I'm guessing, living most of your life in these underprivileged environments. I also grew up in poor Melbourne neighbourhoods but luckily for me, my dad would take on an army alone to make sure I didn't stray towards the wrong crowds. He was a thug of a man, albeit in a one-man gang that passionately despised drug use and criminality. I've walked through all the poor neighbourhoods in Bucharest and Iasi dressed in shorts and a t-shirt wearing a Tag watch (I mention this to show that I could be a target), but no camera as I like to blend in as a person just meandering about in these very poor areas. Yes, these neighbourhoods are extremely poor and very sore to the eyes, but in terms of danger, day or night, excluding drug use, I felt far safer compared to many neighbourhoods of let's say Athens, Rome or Barcelona, and even some underprivileged suburbs of Melbourne. What your camera captured was the manifestation of some people/areas being left behind during a 30-odd-year transition from one polar opposite political/economic/socioeconomic system to another. When you feel hopeless, you become hopeless. When one has to rummage through rubbish bins that contain the rubbish of the poorest people in Bucharest, you immediately appreciate the circumstances these people are in and possibly accept that the neighbourhood could not look any different. “Poverty is the worst form of violence.” -Mahatma Gandhi When you're hungry, you're drug addicted, and there's scarce welfare, you're perpetually experiencing the violence Gandhi referred to. Considering this violence the people of Ferentari have/are experiencing, the literal violence they exact on others is surprisingly extremely low. Take care, bloke. Keep rockin' on.
