So well written, short descriptive sentences, mostly storytelling... little dialogue ...thank goodness! When you hear direct speech from a character, it's usually peppered with 20's slang. I liked the narrator's calm American voice, which sometimes tipped into uh-oh moments because of poor phrasing. Other good points: the illustrations, from old Black Mask magazines, were a superb addition. Great work.

dialogue in these old stories is usually quite telling especially the old fashioned usage and out-of-date slang. The characters' descriptions are the prelude to how they are going to talk. With Chandler they always match. Think of the goldfish story when his 'partner' who works at a hotel cigar counter tells the detective after the news about Peeler getting his feet burned: 'Gosh that blue serge shines.'
