Both are good wheels but I slightly prefer the I9 1/1 set. The engagement on the hub is a little slower but I feel like the quality is slightly higher.

Just an update. Could not find spank wheelset for sale so I did one better had a wheelset custom made. Spank 359 vibrocore front and back with industry 9 hydra hubs (gold) . The vibrocore is amazing can’t believe it works so well. All the roots and rocks just almost disappear. If I was able to get the spank wheelset with the Hexdrive hubs I would’ve. But I am completely happy with what I got. If your going to use spank use the vibrocore rims you will be very happy.

My current setup is a 15x100mm TA front and 12x142mm TA rear. I know I'm stuck with a non-boost rear but is it true that the front hub comes standard as a 100mm but with adapters that can easily make it a 110mm boost if needed? I ask because fork these days are mostly boost 110mm and when I decide to upgrade my fork in the future, I don't want to be buying a new front hub Also my current freehub is the standard Shimano HG for 10s. Could I easily swap the freehub body from an HG to MS or XD in the future?

Yep, you can definitely make those things work! There are companies making conversion kits to go from non boost to boost. They require redishing the wheel but if you are comfortable with truing a wheel that shouldn't be too hard for you. For swapping freehubs, most hubs are convertible but not all of them. ​@@ChrisMurrayEWC Thanks for the quick response mate. I'm sorry but I'm not too familiar with redishing a wheel. I've seen bike mechanics truing a wheel but I'm no pro doing it myself. I was actually asking about those Spank hubs specifically in your video. I've checked their website and about to pull the trigger and buy them as a set. Their website mentions about adapters but I'm still a bit confused with their options and what actually comes in the box For now I need my hubs to be 15X100mm TA front and 12X142mm TA rear with a Shimano HG freehub body. However if I upgrade my fork (and new ones are all boost 110mm these days) in the future, would the adapters that come in the box allow me to easily change to a 15X110mm TA or do I need to get a new front hub? Also I know the freehub bodies are sold separately but when I decide to go 12 speed later down the line, could I get a Shimano MS freehub body and stick it to a 12x142mm rear hub from Spank (because their website doesn't allow me to spec a 12x142mm TA with the MS)

@@shafhamid83 No problem! That should all be really easy. To dish a wheel, it is basically loosening the drive side spokes a bit and then tightening things back up on the non drive side to pull the rim back to center. If you try it yourself my how to build a wheel video should show you how to dish a wheel as part of the build process. To convert the front, you should just need this kit from Spank - spank-ind.com/products/spank-hex-front-hub-boost-conversion-kit-adapters?variant=32003205595222 For the rear, you shouldn't have any problems putting MS on a 142x12 hub as that side of the hub doesn't change between boost and non boost. They likely just don't offer it as it is not a commonly requested combo.

Thank you! I typically use Dumonde Tech freehub oil and grease but any light weight grease like Slick Honey works well too.

@@liwx If your bearings feel smooth you can just pull the freehub apart like I did in this video and just clean/lube the pawls with a light oil or thin grease. If the bearings need to be replaced, those get removed similar to other cartridge hub bearings. I'll try to get a video together but it may be a while before I get time. Hope this helps!

The grease that comes with the hex is terrible. Mine started having drag in the first 3 hours since the wheel got build... the plastic cover for the paws... yeah its brittle plastic... but my god, its supper brittle, broke it only with my nails trying to get it off.... the hub works without it just fine, just have to take care when i remove the driver again. Im currently runing it with Wet Lube from Muc off instead of the OEM grease... its super loud and probably even more smoother then out of the box. I would recommend doing the same if the hub u get delivered has little to no grease inside ! Just be more careful then me with the plastic cover

That plastic clip is super brittle! I definitely agree they are not always greased great from the factory but recently our supplier started shipping the hub shell separate from the driver when we order so it makes it even easier to put our own lube in them. Personally I love the Dumonde Tech freehub oil but Muc Off would probably also work really well.

@@ChrisMurrayEWC yess, compared to other videos that i've seen. Mine was close to being dry 😕 I used on all my Novatecs Wet Lube and worked just fine. The plastic cover kinda annoys me... i have to buy a full paw kit to get it replaced

I just got mine installed to my wheel and I rode it for the first time today and I’m noticing a lot of drag. I turn the cranks and it stops freewheeling after like 10 seconds and it’s super quiet. I’m sure it’s bone dry in there.

Hey @aronsima3484, I just had the same misadventure with the plastic cover, looks like it's glued and does not come off by hand, a piece broke off just by trying to gently lift it with a tiny flat head screwdriver. The freewheel got real lazy after only a few rides, it's randomly not engaging, especially after descents or fast chutes; opening the hub I found no contamination, but very little grease snd whatever is there looks like gunk or cheap glue. I do not pressure wash my bike and I do not spray water into bearings, this must be from the factory. Pretty disappointing. When pushed by hand the paws are visibly slow and don't always come back. I'm going to clean it and lube it with some Shimano hub grease. Hope I can still use the hub without the cover. Any issues with no plastic cover for this past 2 years? Cheers

i have a spank spoon 150mm rear hub... can i replace the free hub with XD?

You should be able to. The hubs that came on the spoon wheels are a bit different from the Hex hubs so I have not worked on them but it looks like this is the freehub you would need. spank-ind.com/collections/hub-adapters/products/oozy-spike-rear-hub-alloy-xd-std-freehub hope this helps!

Do you run the hub dry or do you pack it with grease?

You don't want it packed completely with grease but some grease on the drive ring, seals and in the pawl sockets is a good idea. You could also use a lighter weight oil in place of grease if you like things slightly louder. My personal favorite there is the Dumonde Tech freehub oil.

I love these types of videos! But I was hoping you could include the bearing types so that viewers can know which hub bearings their shop will need to have in stock for a rebuild. For this hub do I need 6002rs for example?

@@1984k5blazer hey did the oil end up making things louder? Just installed mine and cleaned some of the factory grease out but it’s still way to quite for my liking.
