My parents were non-providers. I was their nuisance. Either of them was compromised by my existence on earth. Each of them went their separate way. Both of them abandoned their only child. Her at my 11, Him at my 15. Daddy, we were Boy Scouts. Didn't that mean anything. I was Order of the Arrow (a scout secretly selected by the other kids as emblematic of a GOOD Scout. It's a big deal. An honor). Didn't that mean anything? The other guys thought I was a worthwhile person. Didn't that count? You know, Daddy, I couda been a contender, I couda been somebody, instead of.....Why didn't I matter. I was just a little kid who wanted to be loved. Why was that so impossible? It's been decades since. I am now the same age as old people. My HATE is more intense than ever. One shrink remarked, Don't you see how resilient you are? What good is resilience if both your parents abandoned you? Enough. It's not been an easy row to hoe. You wanna know where the resilient kid got his fortitude to be resilient? From Spanky, and Diana, and Mick, and Percy, and Shirley, and Connie. The Drifters. The Tops, The Harem. Joe & Johnny. Bobby Rydell. Roy, the incomparable Roy. This is a Man's World. Billy Paul. Paul Anka. Gene Pitney. My first 45 Hound Dog, Dionne. JohnPaulGeorge&Ringo. Shaft! god-damned shut yo mouth Shaft! Jay Black. Help Me, Rhonda, help help me, Rhonda. Sherry. Will You Still Love Me, People, Teddy, Burt & Hal, Bill Haley, Adele, "the Beatles of Disco Miss Donna Summer" the Spoonful, Little Suzy, Along Came Jones, Dolly, My Girl, Da Doo Run Run, Stand By Me, Bessie Banks Go Now, What's Love Got to Do With It? Leader of the Pack, Sunny, BeachWood 4-5-7-8-9, One is the loneliest number, Please Dint Let Me Be Misunderstood , Luther, Cher we been together 7 decades Cher, The Divine Miss M, More Than a Woman.....it never stops. I had a lot of friends in high places. They raised me up, they watched over me, they helped me cry, they made me dance, they held my hand when I walked through a storm, they nourished my soul, they kept me up at night until I could sleep in the day, and they woke me up with joy. That's what friends are for. My songs kept me sane-er. My songs kept me company. My songs kept me alive. And Spanky was there, at just the right time. Spanky is here, still, at just the right time. And so am I. Thanks girl, I needed that. God bless.

I often wondered why Spanky McFarlane was not more popular than she was. After all, she had a voice and talent that could rival any of the great female singers of the era!

Malcom Hale "joining" the "Forever 27" crowd in late 1968 (death caused by carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty heater) caused the group to disband. Hale was the glue that kept the band together. They could have easily been one of the numerous acts on the Yasgur Farm stage in Bethel, NY in August, 1969.

Grew up during the 60's...summertime music, riding Schwinn Stingrays all over town...15 cent soda machines at the ESSO gas station, the sweet shop selling penny Bazooka gum, running through sprinklers. My children never experienced such freedom and things and it breaks my heart...And we were never afraid because no one ever tried to hurt us...

Darth, you invade my childhood. You got me at Esso. 9am....go out and play. Be back for dinner. Can you believe that? Someone actually put dinner on the table. And after that, let's go back out and play "Kick the Can" until bedtime. You know, after we stopped eating dinner together, the world got mean.

La Puente, California, 1968 hearing this on every station in So. Cal. Schwinn Stingray, if I had the money, a Hostess Cherry Pie and a bottle (glass of course) of ice cold Grape Crush. Every Saturday riding our bikes to Irwindale Raceway and the rest of the week all over the San Gabriel Valley. The summer vacations for kids in So. Cal. were quite something.

@June_Magoo

maybe spanky and our gang seems a bit innocent to you but listen to their first album with the song about a pot smoking garbage man with the line "pots too good to be just for the young" and their cut off their live album yes seriously "Join the Klan". A great album from 1968 that completely goes against what you just said about the times is the album Outrageous by Kim Fowley . There was non fun, non clean, non easy to listen to, non innocent and, non naive music back then as well. Spanky is one of my favorite groups! Still no need to see the times as unrealistically innocent and wonderful; dont forget about Vietnam, cold war, and all the racism, everything else going in the 60s too. Dont forget eve of destruction and the like that also came out during this time. As much as we sometimes want it to be it was not ALL sunshine and flowers in the 60s.

It's quite a captivating! and dreamy! song. It sounds very nostalgic and yet there's a certain haunting sadness to it that i like, which brings me far away back in time. I was born in 1968. When i first heard about Spanky and her Gang, it was on the short wave radio, during my puberty in the 1980s. Obviously, i didn't really know how she looked like, but i thought that these people could've been my brothers and sisters. Today! i realise that these people could've been my parents. ❤

This song always seemed to stand out among all of those pop hits and misses of the 1967-'69 period. I'll always remember it for its great vocal harmonizing and dream-like instrumentation. It was quite sophisticated for a top-40 hit, especially in 1968, when almost every other song was either bubblegum or psychedelic, neither of which aged well for the most part.
