I met Spanky at a rock concert in Orange County's Pacific Ampitheatre. We got to talking and she told me who she was. Got along great and she was very very nice. She invited me up to her house in Hollywood for a small party and then found out she was singing with The Mamas and the Papas. They were doing a concert in Ontario and asked me to design the T-shirts for them. Got the shirts done and delivered and then went to the Red Lion Inn to meet with them. The concert was cancelled after the promoter skipped with the money and so we sat in the bar and had lunch. Met John Phillips and daughter Mackenzie along with Denny Doherty and Spanky's manager. They were incredibly nice people. Spanky was going back home since the concert was cancelled and she gave me the key to her suite at the Red Lion for the weekend since it was already paid for. When she went on the road with The Mamas and the Papas she sent me postcards from wherever they were. Great memories with a great person and a beautiful voice as well.

What a charismatic woman! Her band deserved a lot more enduring fame then they got- check out how well they pull off their arrangements in vintage tv performances. Super talented, every bit as good pop songwriting as the Mamas and the Papas. Thanks for this!

They didn’t write their hits. John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas wrote the hits for the M & P as well as many other famous songs.

Spanky McFarlaine has a powerful voice like Mama Cass. What a group I love their music . I just came across an album today that is very old. It has a picture of Spanky with a baby which I assume is her baby as I know she had a baby about that time I don't know if it was a boy or a girl.

It has never been explained why the death of Malcolm Hale broke up the band

I read he was a major force with the band, had most of the ideas how the harmonies sound, it sounded like the other band members depended on him. It was so sad for the band losing him this way and so sudden.

So a band member died and that ended the band. Why?
@ericthoroman4429 Жыл бұрын
What I've heard is that after Malcolm Hale died suddenly in late 1968 the band was devastated. He'd been their vocal arranger and overall was the glue that held things together. They fulfilled their immediate obligations (you can find footage of the Malcolm-less band performing on the Smothers Brothers show a few weeks after Malcolm died) but afterwards lost the will to go on.
@kimwood911911 ай бұрын
So sad, that Malcolm Hale died of carbon monoxide in Chicago, from a faulty heater, in his apt. He was only 27 years old, I think. Malcolm also played trombone.
