Do you have a Code 0 or other light-wind sail? What are your general rules and codes of practice regarding wind speeds? Do you use it for cruising, or maybe you use it for racing? We want YOUR thoughts!
@millzee602 жыл бұрын
I was going to ask what you use down wind if not the code zero :) I have no light wind sails, just a mail, stay sail and yankee. And going down wind is a pain, the boat is so unstable. Keeping a wind angle of around 160º improves things a lot. I've just completed my first Atlantic crossing so light winds have not be an issue. I had hoped to get a code zero and set it up like yours. But if it's not that good down wind I might have to think again. Fair winds and following seas.
@wilfdarr Жыл бұрын
With a fixed block on your Code Zero, have you thought about adding tweakers/barber haulers to give you that adjustment you mentioned? At most it's two light lines and another couple small blocks and a couple low friction rings, but depending on how your boat is set up (you mentioned the flying Yankee so I don't know if it'll work) you might even get away with a single line, a centrally mounted block and a low friction ring on the code zero sheet.

I'm not mad about downwind either. We run goose wing with the main prevented. Sometimes we use the mizzen instead (jib and jigger), depends on the conditions... 🤔 Liz

Hi, Jamie and Liz. It’s been a while since I’ve messaged but continue to watch regularly. As per your approach to flying the Code 0, I think you have it right. Be conservative and as conditions settle in decide on deployment again. The issue for flying it in higher wind speed is stretch, which makes the sail perform poorly. Too much stretch for too long becomes permanent and then impacts light wind performance as well. I’ve just made a purchase of my own downwind sail and am trying to decide between a Code 0 or Asymmetric and whether to go top down furler or sock on the Asym. We’re sailing on the Great Lakes on a 40’er and it’s just the two of us. Lots of light wind days, but winds can build up quick and without much warning as small storm fronts move through in the afternoons when the land warms up in the summer, so quickly dowsing is a key importance for us. I wasn’t actually looking at a Code 0 until this video and noticed the torsional rope on yours is fully integrated into the luff of the sail and wondering if that improves usability? I’ve heard topdown furlers can be tricky in higher winds. When you sail downwind, do you have to let out the tack line to loosen the luff? How far downwind can you reasonable fly the Code 0? I was looking for a sail that could be used for between 80-150 deg off the wind. My sailmaker hasn’t brought a Code 0 as an option, but I’ll be asking this week as I’m still in the design stage. Any feedback would be appreciated. And, I realize that everyone’s experience and needs are different, but your views and opinions highly valued. Cheers and fair winds.

Enjoyed the video! So I’m assuming whenever you are talking about wind speed that you are referring to apparent wind and not true wind as that’s what is really important. Or at least that’s the way it is on performance catamarans so I’m assuming it’s the same for monohulls. Would be good if you clarify as I can understand how the Oyster captain said he flies in 30 knots true if he has 13 knots of boat speed off the wind so AWS was only 17. Thanks and keep the great content coming! 👍🏻
@followtheboat Жыл бұрын
Hey Kirk, yes that's a good point. In the video I was talking apparent but I am not sure what the skipper was referring to. I should clarify this more often though because I'll also refer to true wind speed when discussing the wind in isolation of sailing. This could also be confusing for the viewer so I'll make a point of establishing to which I am referring. That aside, even if the skipper's Oyster is cruising at 10kn SOG, that still sounds like a lot of wind. Maybe I'm underestimating the performance of either the boat or the code zero... or both!
@jamieweyndling18612 жыл бұрын
I tend to furl the code zero once it gets above 15 knots apparent. My main concern is the pad eye which the sheet block is secured to. I think the rig would take it in higher wind but not the deck gear😂
@followtheboat Жыл бұрын
Good point about deck gear. Once in Turkey we broke the Yankee traveller car at full strain! Liz 🤦🏼

I have a 40' sloop (Jeanneau 409) with a furling main & 135% Genoa. I reach with my code 0 up to about 55-60 degrees AWA and no more than a 15 knt AWS. I can actually point a bit higher with the code 0, but it offers me no more speed than the Genoa with less heel. Whether reaching or running my preferred limit is 15 knts AWS. When on a deep run with my Genoa, I can do about 1/3 TWS. With my code 0 I can do about 1/2 TWS--sometimes more in lighter wind. I can comfortably run with main and Genoa at up to 115 degrees AWA. With my code 0 I can hit 120 degrees. Code 0 alone is comfortable up to about 170 degrees down wind in steady conditions. Going wing/wing with main and code 0 gives a little boost and seems to stabilize the code 0 a bit. My code 0 sheet blocks are at my back stays, which helps to keep my code 0 open down wind. I do need to use a tweaker on a reach.

Interesting to see you using a film camera ... good pics, go the Tri-X! Did you develop the film on land or have you got your own tank etc? Hard to develop a roll on a cruising boat but not impossible.

The issue here is the KZbin algorithm. If you don't watch one of our videos for a couple of weeks, they drop off the radar, even if you're subscribed to the channel. The trick is to click the alarm bell to get notified, and to check your 'subscribed' channels section for new releases. It's a major frustration for us content creators, and I'm frequently frustrated that I too don't get reminders to channels I'm subscribed to. I wish KZbin would stop pissing around with the algorithm!
@AllMyHobbies Жыл бұрын
@@followtheboat ya i think thats mostly correct. I always look at my subscribers tab. The problem comes when you sub to a lot of content there could be 20 videos releases all on Friday morning or Saturday or the like. So if i look far enough back I will find it. But your right once I watch a few of your videos then next week they will pop your video up on the home tab to get my attention. I cant hit the bell without turning on notifications for youtube app on my phone and ipad and I will not do that as i dont need dings from youtube on top of my normal texts and stuff. Well cheers keep up the good work and I hope you guys are having fun out there.

I have both an A0 and A3. I have ripped my previous A3 in 15kts apparent at near dead down wind, but the sail was a little older. So maybe a little weak or unseen damage. My 110% jib does just as well if not better with the main above 15kts anyways, so I tend to furl the spins in the mid teens. And I think how much do I really need to push a few mils if sail?

We furl the code zero at 14knts true and drop the sail at 25knts true. We changed to a discontinuous line and drum for safety reasons. Those continuous lines (infinite line) can let go in high wind and unfurl the sail usually at night 😂

But why on earth would you deliberately have a code zero set in 30 knots? Only bad things can happen, while the boat will be just as fast under plain sail, especially with a very heavy displacement boat like an oyster. Hull speed much?
