I have always enjoyed RAN sailing. They seem so genuine and just good people with no me, me me or attitudes. Will be nice to see them back on the water. Great video I enjoyed it because I’ve felt I was being negative when I’ve felt “strong dislike” toward a few sailing channels to the point I have stopped watching them.

I used to watch La Vagabond but then they began taking themselves too seriously and it all just seemed plastic and “produced”. You guys were real from the start and haven’t changed. I miss Millie, but admire you both.

I guess I dislike Vagabonde. It was the first sailing channel I watched but so much has changed since then. The children, the money, the boat... It's just not the same. Really dislike that trimaran of theirs, such a step down from the Outremer. And there always seems to be so much crew on their boat now a days (do you really need 2 deckhands and a nanny to run your operation now?). And Riley's ego seems to be growing at the same rate as their wealth. But that's okay. I found other channels that resonates more. 😌

It's the Nanny... they can't be bothered with raising children; "Yo nanny, can you clean the dirty children and take them to the pool while I drink something green and get a manicure?"

The ones attempting crossings with beat up poorly maintained boats scare me. I’m currently watching a series about sailing from Alaska to Greenland. Think it’s Alluring Arctic or something like that. It’s an interesting route in an unfamiliar part of the world. I used to watch Sailing Doodles pretty often when it was Bobby and a couple dogs. The channel has morphed into more of a luxury sailing channel but still watch sometimes. The scenery is always easy on the eyes. Sailing Tritea is more back to the basics and checking out James’ tattoos is interesting. He has an appreciation for the simple things and I like that.

Pets? I’ve been living aboard for over 5 years in the Netherlands where in the marina there are several water birds locally called Coots (Water Hens) and Fouts (Grebes). I took pity on a pair of Coots trying to nest having their nests turfed the back of less loved boats so built a little floating nest island for them. I should point out that I didn’t take my boat out of the water for all of those years (fresh water), so was able to foster 4 nestings with variable success. I had one particular couple for 2 years and it was great to watch up close the whole process, and even be part of the family. We also have one little spider catching bird here which I just love because they are so dynamic. Apart from birds my Southerly with its Center Board Case is a fish hatchery as well. I found out recently when I finally had to take the boat out to prepare for its relocation from NL to Aus, that I had several eels living in there as well. It’s almost a farm. Once underway I am going to attempt to have a garden aboard. Answering some one’s comment I realized that there was sufficient underutilized deck real estate directly in front of the dodger to build a sort of shallow profile green house for growing herbs bonsaied plants (cherry tomatoes and even potatoes) so I will give it a go,….maybe. See if nature will bend to my will. I’d love to have a pair of geckos and would find myself looking how to give them a place for their eggs. Going too far? I don’t think so. Life is a community, give and take. Which boating KZbinrs do I not like? There are some KZbinrs whose whole focus is built on finding things to winge about and be dissatisfied. The particular couple, though did do a brilliant set of videos on their tour of the Canal Du Midi which I absolutely loved. FTB, Bou and Brandy, and Wind Hippie are my essential watching along with more casually Vet Tails, white Spot Pirate, and several others.

Haha! The thing with laundry on board at anchor is the ENORMOUS amount of water it takes to rinse the clothes/linen. The washing is the easy bit, you just put it in a bucket with detergent (preferably environmentally safe) and stir it or let it soak, or stomp up and down with your feet. In clean anchorages I've taken to rinsing with seawater and then finishing with one freshwater rinse. Liz 🙏 Just realised I should have said all this in the video...

Our thoughts exactly. The 435 was Oyster's most popular model, built for circumnavigating. We love her. I've never been on an HP49, but that pilot house is a must in my opinion. The other thing that Oyster do/did so well is that really central cockpit - it gives you an enormous sense of safety (and a very roomy aft cabin)! Liz x

@@followtheboat my only issue is… as you have make clear… you spend a LOT more time not sailing. My instinct and budget is more towards a similar boat to yours… Oyster, Moody or H-R. My head is more inclined towards an early Leopard cat or similar… I think cats are better in tropical waters… and while not so great on long ocean passages… in every X years you only spend a few months properly out in the big blue. They are ugly floating apartments… but having sailed both… they are much mellower on longer sails. It’s a tricky one for me. I adore boats similar to yours… but feel long term a cat will be more usable and comfortable… better utility. Also I will be sailing with friends and they are much fairer in use of space… with four or so fairly equal double cabins. Unless it was a very large Oyster or Moody it is one amazing cabin, one small one and a couple of broom cupboards. And of course all that roof space for solar panels and easy access to the sea and tender. Can see me fly fishing off the bottom of the sugar scoop at dusk.

@WillN2Go15 ай бұрын
Things I find annoying. First, I think I'm a sailor because of KZbin sailors. I've taken lessons, chartered boats, and I've crossed the Pacific as one of four crew. A good KZbin video is incredibly useful. I'm really good at knots (bowline one hand behind my back) because I found great knot tying videos. Most are not even good. That's the challenge. So thank you KZbin sailors, but.... I'm annoyed by the 'cute thong butt on the bow' thumbnail. (I think that finally got through.) I like butts, but it's cheap, especially when it's a couple. It's like pimping the female half of the crew. A woman on a boa, or anyone, who knows how to sail is always compelling. Bogus over selling titles: "We almost....." "This is the end...." "We quit...." "We almost died..." are almost always cheap gimmicks. I feel the lure, but I resist. These scream 'fake drama! no real content." Food scenes. Short or good, but not mediocre and long. If they are like Fabio cooking on Harbors Unknown, terrific. He's an amazing chef, makes fabulous meals, shows how he does it, efficient. My only complaint is they make me ravenously hungry. (If I was going to shoot a cooking clip, I'd watch clips of Fabio until I could make them like that. But first I'll need to learn how to cook better.) On board food is, especially on passage, a huge topic of interest, but if it's just boiling a package... keep it short. It's not gourmet, it's just calories - but it is information. And if you do a recipe, have an inset shot of the ingredients. We've ever ever done this before! Sometimes incredibly annoying. This is across KZbin. I find it a complete waste of time to see someone open a box, hold each little baggie and yammer on about it. Or they're doing something simple and fumbling every step because they've never done anything like plumbing before. This teaches people how to fumble. I've learned so many things just watching someone who really knows what they are doing, doing it. There is a very intelligent guy on YT, great sailor, who has an amazing boat, whose videos are usually 14 minutes of doing something that doesn't work and then 1 minute of it working with an incomplete explanation of what he did that did work. I just can't watch that channel. Capturing sea state. This is a real puzzle. I pointed my phone off the back of the boat in 4 meter seas during a crossing and thought, eh, just okay... The owner asked for a minute of it he could post on Facebook. In the end it was a pretty good clip... best of 7500 nm. But it should've been better. KZbinrs struggle with this, Hollywood fakes it. It's hard. (I can watch videos of Mavericks, 15m waves and think 'wow!', being there, on the shore. I'm sure I'd throw up at least once, or it would trigger my PTSD. It's hard to capture sea state. Some things that work: Shooting across the center of of the boat, the CGs either across the beam or looking forward or aft with boat parts in the frame. (Sailing Sweet Ruca just put up an amazing video of just sailing around Cape Horn. What's nice is that it's long clips, so your mind can settle in on what you're seeing, and they cut out the music. (Music is often a mistake. Great if you get it right, but interfering if you don't. I never play music when I"m sailing, it's so sensual all by itself. Music is often used to cover up different sound levels that don't edit together very well, or it's an attempt to energize the clip. It's not necessary. Gunboat? Great videos, amazing boats, stupid music. We see more when it's quiet. Want to really SEE a clip? turn off the sound.) So longer clips are usually better for putting the viewer into that place. Great Hollywood directors know this (Joseph H. Lewis in Gun Crazy, put the camera in a car. Women gets out walks around the corner to rob a bank. The camera stays in the car. One of the most nail biting scenes you'll ever see. Sailing? Maybe keep the camera in the cabin. Everything is moving a bit. Sailor in dry foulies, dry face, combed hair, opens the companion way - it's stormy up there. Through the companion way, you see them thrown from one side to the other out of frame...... a minute passes. They reappear and re enter the cabin - drenched.) Keeping the sea level. I notice this from the helm if I bend my knees and keep myself vertical. The boat is really moving around. James on Sailing Triteia has a video where his camera is on a gimbal, keeping level. He's in the frame but the ocean behind him is showing how much the boat is moving. This is where I figured out to shoot across the center keel, CG... (Lowest possible angle, which is determined by the deck. I just know from sea kayaking, waves appear a lot bigger, and more interesting from 60cm off the water. (If you sea kayak off California, so usually calm, for about 16 hours, so 4-6 paddles, you will see a rogue wave. It'll be 200cm in 50 cm waves, so not a monster, not dangerous, and you won't have to do anything to not tip over. And technically not a rogue wave. In a boat you'd never notice it. So lower is better. But if you do pay attention to the sea, especially on rough days, you will see some unusual waves. I've seen solitons dozens of time, but on very calm days, a single wave miles long heading towards the coast. Never a ship anywhere in sight. Also put some height marks on your mast. Find a place to put a camera. I was standing on the deck of a catamaran watching the owner at the mast doing something. He's almost 2m, the waves that day were 3m, I'm 1.73m, the deck is about 1.5m. Behind him I saw one wave about 25m off our bow quarter at least a meter over his head. So 5, 6? I only noticed because I had all these reference points, and I made sure to note that the boat was level when I saw this. So on a rough day, set up a camera, ideally on a gimbal to keep it level and just let it run with the mast and the marks in the frame (focus on infinity) . You'll get something. So I guess if I get on a delivery crew, this will be my challenge. Bring a gimbal. Capture sea state. Okay. I'm supposed to be working. Hope this isn't too annoying.

Not annoying at all, Will, we appreciate you taking the time to write, especially with the filming sea states issues. The only time I pulled it off was a short clip across the Indian Ocean, and that was before we were putting out videos. I can't watch cooking channels, but only because they make me very hungry too!

That's a good way to be. We were asked the question, so we used it as a hook for this episode. As Jamie says in the vid, he's thrilled there are so many channels out their working hard to bring this way of living to everyone, you don't have to like them all. I stop subscribing once I can't get behind the channel any more, but I always feel some level of guilt. Liz 🤔🙏

The sailing channels that promote electric propulsion without telling the truth about range and the difficulty keeping the batteries full. So many naive sailors are wasting hard earned money on a pipe dream because these KZbinrs are being deceptive for personal gain.
@followtheboat5 ай бұрын
Good point. When we repowered we had so many viewers tell us to go electric. We looked into it but, in addition to the cost, we just couldn't see how it's practical for long range cruising. The technology is still not there yet and any solution that comes close is prohibitively expensive.

I’m not going to name and shame other channels or what the “community” calls creators as it would be very disingenuous and somewhat hypocritical as we still tune in and watch every now and then as most of us are in need of humour or horror. The simple fact is that TV (KZbin) for the visually confused and socially concerned citizens out there has its fair share of narcissistic and Machiavellian personalities. There are those that entertain and those that profess. It’s not up to them to choose their audience, on the contrary it is us that determines the void of their imaginary self worth. But they do create the void. That hole they wish to inhabit or for some, inherit! If your thing is to be a smiling laughing contrived set of teeth happily giving your orthodontist kudos for the perfectly arranged set of pearly whites whilst wondering where his nitrous oxide has magically disappeared to is you thing. Go ahead. There’s Vegemite, Marmite and the never ending bikini clad false smiling forced laughing vaginamite gen zer with a fella who’s never tried a steak telling us how difficult your life is. But we all tune in and watch. It’s not the fault of the creators, it’s us. We watch the train wreck of a grifting couple buy a couple of dogs that really need to run, the office boy and the medic informing us of the only way to anchor years before whilst almost losing a new boat to the sea. There are some train wrecks out there that aren’t sailing or enjoying themselves but we still watch. I’m not going to start a list but will get to the point. Don’t be shocked by what you’re watching and get all angry and disgusted, it’s not them. That’s their job. Tune in or tune out. That’s all you have to do. Remember the armchair only gets wet when you choose, they’re out there doing it wether you like it or not.
