There is no better video tutorial about how to safely cut threads into an aluminum head than this series. I just finished repairing a blown spark plug from my 5.4 L Ford van and had zero shavings using this method. Well thought out and executed video. Top notch editing and methodical patience with filming every step. Thank you for sharing your professionalism!

I spent about $50 for items, did just as he said, used sealant on timesert, tightened spark plug to 15 ft pds with torque wrench and car is running wonderful. Right now I plan to check all the spark plugs every few months until I'm satisfied they are staying put. If you ever hear a slight vibration when starting up car, and it might seem harder to start, check the tightness of your spark plugs!

First I want to thank you for your very informative video. I had a spark plug blow out of my 02 toyota sequoia and thought it was the end of the world. After watching you video and taking notes, I did my spark plug and only spent about 65 buck. Thank you so much. The grease trick is awesome ingenuity.

I used that on our car and I didn't tighten it quite enough. It loosened up. I tightened it to jam it. You'd be better to install a Big-sert! Use wheel bearing grease to catch shavings. That swaging tool can't be used very good sometimes because engine room is small. Be careful because the tap COULD fall into the cylinder! Back the tap out frequently and remove shavings. The reason it's binding is because the tap is clogged. Big-sert is better!

Watch all four parts to this series Duane and it was a great series. You're a great teacher explaining all the pitfalls of tapping a spark plug hole. And great demo showing both sides of the cylinder head to see how the chips would react with and without grease. I appreciate all the time that it took you to set up the camera, lighting, etc. as I know it takes a lot of time to produce videos. Take care Duane and don't work too hard...

Anyone planning on doing this MAKE SURE YOU USE 2 HANDS RATCHETING IT IN! 1 to stabilize the extension & socket and the other to ratchet. Seen too many vids where they just one hand it n watch them ratcheting it down like another bolt. Don't expect those threads holding out long. Not to mention if you use high temp silicone gasket on the insert be extremely careful not to get any of that gasket stuff inside the cylinder wall. 2nd time watching. Still helpful tool.

Great video as always. Love your explanation. The unfortunate thing is very few videos are coming now a days from your side and after very long wait they are up! We need videos from you although they may available from other up loaders! Same thing happened in my father's Honda bike head. I fixed that with the help of local machine shop for as low as $1. They made a sleeve their self and fixed it in place of worn out threads.

Just FYI for people, I'm working on an 05 4.6l F150 and just picked up the Sav A Thread kit locally. The threading tool doesn't have an adapter for a socket wrench at the end of it. Instead it is just the bare 3/4" or 19mm face on top. My guess is they are now selling the adapter without the ability to use it with the head still on the engine as a 3/4" or 19mm will not fit into the well as to avoid people from threading and leaving all of those shavings inside the engine. Felt people should know. Will probably be welding or using epoxy here in a bit and just sticking a spare socket to the end of it that will clear the well.

Just a tip young Fella,,Put grease in the slots of the tap,,or drill bit drill and tap you will notice all the shaving will be stuck to the grease when removing both drill and tap.

what i would do if i had a blown out spark plug thread is i would start with an old vacuum cleaner hose. one that probably has alot of duct tape on it to begin with. i would make another small hole very close to the end and put my wrench extensions threw it. id remove the valve cover and release the intake valve if it wasnt already open to allow airflow threw the plug hole. id go in threw the vacuum hose with my extensions and a magnetic socket with thread tape ( same with the drill if you can get in far enough. chevy 350 engines are easy with this method ) and use the suction from a shop vac to pull alot of the shaving away from falling inside the engine. when said and done go in with a borescope and check the cylinder. removing the head is in some ways easier but id rather mess with a shop vac and a few extensions then i would a timing reset. this works well on small engine to

This is a really great video. My question to you is this: Am I right in believing that spark plugs that enter the cylinder in this manner have no spark plug tube sealer? My 2002 Nissan Frontier has the plugs enter the cylinder head in exactly this manner. I have watched other videos in which some vehicles' spark plugs (many?) enter somehow through the top of the valve cover and have sealers. I can't see into that recessed hole very well on my Frontier, but I have to assume that I have no spark plug tube sealers (gasket/grommet rubber-type material). Am I correct in this? I am trying to determine where I am getting oil fouling all over my third cylinder spark plug. I thought there was a sealer, like many other vehicles; but, after watching your video, I am of the opinion that I have no spark plug tube sealers, and neither does this vehicle. Am I correct?

Were all of the 5.4 & 4.6 fords afflicted with the spark plug problem? or perhaps maybe only 2 valve or 3 valve? Or certain years? Did Ford ever attempt a design change? Thank you! There's a much better alternative Napa makes a part number 600-3248 for all Triton engines that give you a tornado twist impact steel adapter no drill twist right into the head and seals with loctite high temp sealant then a plug that will reach through the adapter to the right height inside the cylinder because the adapter seats end of the head perfectly without shavings are debris or removal of the head there is a KZbin video on it you use and I sees on the spark plug to prevent rusting up the two metal surfaces for easy removal way better than anything else $60 kit also has a proper height coil pack Boot and spring bad to the Bone permanent fixed quick

Hi, would you care to comment on using heilcoils vs (hard) inserts in repairing the threads of hole of motorcycle spark plug. Thanks,.
@danielgray23845 жыл бұрын
Why not use Gardserts and save yourself time and money. They do not use special tools to do the install. The new insert expands when you install so there is no hammering to seat. So for less then $10 you can install the insert and it is not going anywhere. These inserts saved me many time when working on Harley Davidson motorcycles. They com in many sizes so you should be able to find a fix for almost any thread size..

Do you know what diameter the larger threads on the double stepped tap are? People keep saying that these particular inserts have varied life expectancies. What i want to do is purchase a single insert from either calvan or timesert and use that instead of these inserts so l ong as the threads match.
