0:26 - TEMPO: Note how they are matching tempo and speed exactly as sparring partners, so each person has a turn and then the other person goes: P1 Attacks --> P2 Defends --> P2 Attacks --> P1 Defends --> P1 Attacks... and so on, WITHOUT INCREASING SPEED. Newer practitioners often start gradually increasing their speed, usually without noticing. At this point the senior practitioner should step back and reset the tempo to the initial speed, and can say, "Can we keep the same tempo for this round?" Otherwise the tempo will keep speeding up and the newer person will not learn good tempo. First you have to learn how to keep proper tempo, then you can learn how to break tempo / cut the time etc. during a fight if you need to do so.

This is one of the best english speaking seres I have ever seen. Firstly thank you! Secondly it is important I think to include a mention of cutting practice, dummies and most important of all have a coach watch, guide and correct. There is nothing worse then spend your time doing the worng techniques. When you go to the range here in Australia you are constantly tested, monitored and watched by people who are certified. If you apply this same rigor to your training vast improvements are possible. In short go to a place with people who can help train you. Trainers are worth every penny rather than try to do it yourself.... Only rarely have I ever seen someone self taught without big holes in their defenses or attacks or footwork or bladecontrol. I knew a guy who did reenactment come in crowing like a rooster but a Trainer named Pam thrashed him silly. After that he realised that he had huge gaps in his knowledge and skills.

When you go to a HEMA school I highly advise finding someone who can take you under their wing. A training brother or sister who you can buy coffee and learn the language of the Sword. There is a lot to take in. Terms that are strange and advanced students can seem hard to reach. Be honest that you don't know and patient with them. Give them time to know you!

Nice video and a very useful concept. We use these three intensities as well for training, but always with hand and head protection :)

I've literally seen someone use a full powered murder stroke on someone's ribcage as a joke. Needless to say, using a technique literally designed to injure people WHILE in armor got him kicked out of the school

I have to practice with branches and there's a lot of cons for that. A bit of unremovable wood juts out (unless you have a strong blade to cut it off) There are no cross guards which make your hands 100% vulnerable.

Elie Chan well I have made several wooden swords with guards. I recommend doing it for more fun and realism. If you can't, try buying a wooden sword or even a proper sparring sword.

people were still killed in armor... and modern Buhurt people get seriously injured all the time. Armor also changes the way you are able to move, and if you're practicing for unarmored or lightly armored combat (Gambeson with jackchains, maille mitts (which will still get your hands broken), and a helmet), that's a problem. Then there's the issue of technique, since fighting against someone in armor requires you to offend them in a different way for your strikes to be effective. In the end, defend yourself AT ALL TIMES; as it's the #1 rule of combatives. Currently, HEMA has become too sportified (in an effort to rapidly grow), and people are not treating the sword-shaped-objects (AKA: poorly balanced bar-maces and paddle-clubs) we use in practice like actual SWORDS (sharp iron bars that you really don't want to be hit with, so if one's coming at you; you GTFO of the way any way you can). This has created an environment where people are increasingly reliant on PPE to protect them from their poor performance (just think about it, 10-15 years ago, we managed with Olympic fencing masks, padded caps, and Lacrosse gloves (and while people did get injured, you still see the same % of people today in many clubs and tournaments getting hurt, despite vastly superior equipment). That's why I advocate for slow-fencing between somewhat experienced practitioners with actual swords... it tends to cut through the BS you see people doing (no one want's a hunk of sharpened steel jammed through their face). If you stick your hand out there to be hit, it's going to be hit. If you are assuming such an absurd posture that you can't move your legs, they'll get hit. If you don't protect your head, it's going to get hit. If you attack without displacing/subjugating the opposing weapon, you are going to get hit. If you overcommit to an attack, you're going to get hit. If you make a habit of just hanging out in measure, and not doing anything to the other person (seems to be very popular today, since moving adds time to any sort of riposte action, but is essential to not being killed), you're going to get hit. If you find that you are constantly (over 50% of the time) receiving what would really be mortal/amputating wounds... you're not doing something right (most of the strikes you receive should amount to superficial cuts or getting winged with a thrust, if you're actually defending yourself). Not treating it like it's "for realsies" is turning a disproportionate amount of the HEMA population into one of the three most dangerous types of opponent: The Stupid (doesn't respect the weapon, thinks they can "tank" a sword strike), The Suicidal (Knows the sword's going to mess them up, but doesn't care as long as they get you too), and The Unskilled (so clueless as to what's going on, they don't realize that what they're doing is about to get them killed). While that's great for scenario-training... it shouldn't be you're go-to method.

sorry as silver said you should always train at true time and full force , as you can make anything work slow and gently , how you do this is to use .light sticks , foam or like , then light steel with good protection, remember your governors , judgement ,two fold distance &time , winning or gaining the place , The place is when you can cut or thrust without having to take a step, , speed is the most important part , always train hard , or you will not get better a your fight

Yup, only takes getting whacked hard in the unprotected head or hands with a PVC "lightsaber" once before you start protecting your head and hands lol. I do like to do some slow-work with actual swords, so people can get a feel for how swords actually act in blade on blade actions (blunt steel and sticks don't replicate that), and I find that staring down a sword pointed at you snaps most people out of their BS pretty quick; especially when you also incorporate cutting practice where you're using your actual technique/level of force you would use (not pretending you're chopping down a tree with a sword). People start looking at it a little differently when you demonstrate throwing a crooked cut with minimal force and cut halfway through a single tatami... and then they realize that that was roughly equivalent of halfway through their arm. No one wants to lose a hand or get a sword ran through their face.
