I tried the lure inside a DynaTrap but found no mosquitoes inside. Lures are tough in that they work best for only certain species of mosquitoes. My conclusion is that mosquitoes are not idiots. They really like the combination of scent, CO2, and heat ... and that's something that's hard to replicate.

@@LawnJourneysThanks for the heads up on the spartan. But also for the trap you liked. Issue with yours is there's no zapper, so relies on a fan to blow bugs into a holding tank. So no wonder why there were bugs that were still alive. Also, the reason most is the bugs in your trap were moths and whatnot is because of the light. You need a lure for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are attracted to certain scents but mainly heat signatures. So they see our heat. That's why they are more active at dusk and at dawn, and in the dark, but that's why we don't get attacked as much when we're in the sunlight. So your purple bulb isn't going to attract mosquitoes and the heat it makes isnt enough. You need a legit lure. The 15 watt Black Flag bug zapper, that has a white bulb, comes with a mosquito lure. That said, you can buy the replacement lures which are roughly $7. Yeah not cheap but I know for a fact that they lure mosquitoes. The lure comes in a small plastic cage that hooks to the side of the zapper. Well, we had a bad mosquito problem one year, to the point they were waiting by our front and back doors. So I was going to set the zapper up IN my house, yes I know they're not meant for indoors, and while attaching the lure I was deciding where I wanted to sit it and when I went to move it a group of mosquitoes flew off the lure. Now, there is a problem with Black Flag's reasoning. Because the mosquitoes never had a reason to enter the zapper. So I unscrewed the plastic cage that is around the metal zapper and I attached the lure INSIDE. On top of that I turned the lure to face a wall to create a harder area to escape. BINGO! No more buzzing in my ears while sleeping. Another thing I did was, we had a moth problem where the tiny moths got in our kitchen and into the pantry. They destroyed bags and boxes of food. So I placed another zapper outside, of course, but inside and solved that issue too. When I finally turned my common sense monitor back on, I realized I had to relocate the front and back door lights, away from the doors. And instead of leaving a light on we leave our zapper on.

@@Roller76 sorry I’m behind on reply’s but appreciate your detailed info. I have to check this black flag zapper out with the lures. Agree I don’t find many mosquitoes in the Dynatrap and their lure pack is too costly. The fan is supposed to suck them into the chamber where the dry out and expire. Maybe I should try the black flag lure in it, $7 is better price point. Thanks again!

We have been using the same Dyna Trap for approximately 6 years. Of course we change the bulb. Our property is bordered on two sides in the back by water. We put the trap out in the beginning of to mid May and run it continually and have no mosquito problems when we sit on our back deck. Living on water, having a fish pond and our drinking water comes from a well on our property, I prefer to not use chemicals. I highly recommend the product.

So you put the Spartan traps out first and despite the rain, heat and humidity that you mentioned you have noticed few if any mosquitoes... suggesting that maybe they worked? But then the Dynatrap that actually shows you what it killed had only 2-3 mosquitoes in it and massacred your moth population? And that is what you're recommending? Sorry, but as a scientist with no horse in this game (other than I hate mosquitoes), I question your conclusions. Might there be some rationalization for spending $$$ on the Dynatrap that kills - as you so clearly demonstrated - very few mosquitoes? Or, putting it another way... if the Dynatrap didn't kill your mosquitoes (as you clearly demonstrated), what did?
@LawnJourneys

Hi Robert. Thanks for commenting. I think I said it was impossible to definitely say if either were responsible. My backyard is surely not a controlled environment and who knows what my neighbors may or may not be doing to deter mosquitoes. My neighbor two houses down told me they are inundated with mosquitoes. Most likely result of their local environment. Yes I see very few mosquitoes in the Dynatrap but it does collect flies, and a lot of moths (harmless). I really think the most effective mosquito control is removing standing water in the vicinity. Lastly The spartan traps probably had no effect, I posted an article submitted by another commenter that spreads to it being ineffective. Don you have any recommendations to share? Thanks again and be well!

The misleading part of Dynatrap is it traps all types of flies and mosquitoes. Mosquitos are not attracted by light. That’s why when you look at your lamp outside you see dead flies and moths but no mosquitos. Moths and flies are attracted to the light but not mosquitos. I haven’t opened the Dynatrap but I will return them after so many negative reviews. It’s just a fly and moth trap not mosquito. @@LawnJourneys you will be pleased. What mosquitos hate is this type of flower called Crystalline? Not sure but basically the Thermacell has a small butane that when lit heats the small pads that have this synthetic Crystalline flower that emits up and covers you like a dome up to 15 mile radius. It’s been proven effective. There are different types. The Tiki torch type, the lamp patio, the patio shade, the camper portable one, and the best one the latest Thermacell Gen 2.0 radius which doesn’t use any butane or batteries. It is a rechargeable device that heats the pad electronically. The reason why mosquitos are attracted to us is the CO2 from our breath, sweat, pheromone and our body odor. They tend to bite more of the women too because of the type of pheromones they release and odor which mosquitos love their sweet blood they call it. There are days when I don’t get bitten but the girls do but once I shower and get out smelling fresh as a man I get eaten alive!

Hi, an ecologist with an entomology background here: Neither trap looks like it is doing anything at all useful for your mosquitoes. You probably already feel pretty good about your correct assessment of the Spartan contents: ants (camponotus? - definitely not a pest species FWIW) and earwigs. I can't comment intelligently whether the trap is causing mortality in mosquitoes after they visit and leave. The Dyna trap looks like it is just killing everything - worse than useless for your purpose. I'd pitch it and look for something that actually targets them. Generally light-based traps aren't effective.

The eradicators worked for me. I had a ditch beside my camp on the Tombigbee River with thousands of mosquitoes swarming. After two weeks they were almost all gone and I was finally able to sit outside. Proof for me.

Interesting and thanks for sharing. I didn't have many mosquitos last season but can't definitively associate to any one reason, eradicator, dynatrap etc.. Let me know if you use them again this season and if you have the same result. I understand they have a new version.
