Doing my first next weekend! Are there enough water stations or do most people wear a hydration pack?
@ithacawoodsprite4 ай бұрын
I would definitely bring a hydration pack and nutrition for a beast. There are water stations but i would just use them to refill my pack. I ended up in the ER for dehydration during a really hot summer super last year, snd felt like shit most of the race. Even though the beast is twice as long, having a pack and nutrition helped me finish strong feeling good! The OCR kings actually have an another great video on fuel for endurance races, I used tailwind and stinger waffles at their recommendation and they worked great.

Were there foot holds on the z wall rope part or was that just straight grip?
@OCRKings5 ай бұрын
Great question! No, there were no foot holds for that section. You could face the ropes and put your feet against the board down there (sort of like olympus), but that was really slippery and weird, or you could let your legs dangle and have your knees slide/scrape across the board surface (what we both did).
@mattsully22385 ай бұрын
@@OCRKings thanks for the clarification. Camera wasn't giving full coverage on that one. Since it's a new idea I get excited
@OCRKings5 ай бұрын
@@mattsully2238 Right on! And yeah, I thought of that afterward, no view of the feet on any part of that obstacle. I was trying to get Damer, the ropes, and the bell, and no donk into anybody on the wall behind me. We're gonna have to have a video discussing the new Z Wall layout, as well as Olympus. They shortened the chains, and the wall face felt super grippy, scratchy almost, like sandpaper.

How did you do the ropes on Z-wall? The volunteer was telling people they could stand sort of on the lower wall. But that's against the rules. It's too low to tarzan and I don't have the upper body to hold myself up there.
@josh.beckett905 ай бұрын
I failed it both the first 2 races and on the 3rd I went on the inner track, grabbed the 2nd ones and leaped for the bell. Not sure if there is any other practical way. Usually they still have feet if it’s ropes so this was a first.
@OCRKings5 ай бұрын
We were told this time (and last year) that standing on the top edge of the lower wall was a no go. We dangled there with our knees running against the lower wall and occasionally scrapping the top edge. We mostly looked like we were kneeling in mid air. It was not very glamorous looking. I tried to put my feet against the bottom wall like doing Olympus, but it was too awkward and slippery.

Very nice guys. Very nice. Was it one long course or did you do laps?
@OCRKings5 ай бұрын
Thanks! This was a long one, a single course of 14 miles. The elevation gain and the hills were kind of crazy. Good times!
@jimbragg89095 ай бұрын
The Beast, Super and Sprint are usually in my experience long courses with the Super usually following about 1/2 of the Beast course and the Sprint 1/2 of the Super. This is why most of the obstacles are at the start and finish because if you do a trifectas, you can expect to do 2/3 of the obstacles 3 times by the finish of the Sprint. It's the Ultra that is usually a Beast run twice more or less or 2 laps.

Thanks once again gents. Those ropes on the slip wall are usually about 1/2 way up on the Beast...glad to see them all the way down, but it's cruel to put them after the dunk wall. LOL I will be doing this in 4 days in NC. Too bad they still don't have anything much new other than a barbwire craw to get into the starting area. Was it me or was the Atlas Ball smaller? Great video as usual.
@OCRKings5 ай бұрын
You are welcome and good luck in NC! and it seems like some atlas balls are well worn, beat up, and a bit smaller than new ones. Certainly smaller than the ones we made at home to workout with.
@shoobies12514 ай бұрын
how do you do the stair way to spartan that is hard to get up using the red grips
@OCRKings4 ай бұрын
Good question. The short answer is we try to get to a point where we can put a foot on top of one of the hand holds as quickly as possible. The best example can be seen here at 11:57 kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3zbdpepiryab80 Basically it's a little jump to grab a handhold with each hand, move up one, one more, then get ready to plant a foot on the first hand hold I can. Once you have a foot, and two hands on the holds, you've beaten the obstacle. Doing pullups really help with the very first part, of grabbing the handholds and transitioning to the next two.

Doing my first beast next weekend! Do you recommend wearing a hydration pack or are there plenty of water tables?
@OCRKings4 ай бұрын
Excellent, good luck next weekend! Where is your Beast? Is it hot there? If so, maybe a hydro pack is a good idea. You know your hydration needs best. Overall, Spartan's hydration situation is very good. You might be able to get by on their water stations. We prefer to carry our own hydration and supplement that by "drinking the local" meaning having water as needed from Spartan. Our preference is not a full hydration bladder, but rather one or two 12oz Gatorades in the front pouches of the vest. That's what we did in this video. Two Gatorades and Spartan water worked for us for the whole race. If where you're running is hot, maybe consider a hydro bladder, you could always dump out some water if it's too heavy or unnecessary, and you can drop the pack on the monkey bars, rig, etc. If not too hot, and you are used to running light, maybe skip the hydro pack. Again, you know your needs best, and Spartan is pretty good on providing water.
