Book Robert Baratheon is supposed to be 6'5 (or taller) so yeah he can stand a chance against the Mountain. The Hound, Selmy, Jaime, and Arthur Dayne (also King Aerys' kingsguard) also have a good chance beating him. Along with Tyrion's trial, Oberyn's speech to Tyrion is one of the most intense "non-violent" scenes in the show. Also, Oberyn's encounter with the young Lannisters efficiently show that Cersei has been narcissisic from the start while Jaime has always been "naturally compassionate" but just got caught on a situation with Cersei.

Guys, regarding Sir Alliser Thorne. His hatred for Jon Snow stems from the fact that the reason he (Thorne) was sent to the wall in the 1st place was that he fought on the Targaryen side. Nobody takes The Mountain pretty easily. Everyone is aware that, like Bronn said, "one misstep" and you are dead, no matter how 'great' you are. Also, Barristan Selmy is NOT the greatest swordsman in history. He was briefly the greatest swordsman in the realm, when he joined the kingsgayrd in his prime and before Arthur Dayne joined. By the time Dayne died, Selmy was old enough and Jaime entered the game.
@brettervonkanada6102 Жыл бұрын
@@scientia.veritas I'm sorry but that's a bunch of BS. Selmy is regarded as THE greatest swordsman in history both by Robert and Ned in book one, by Jorah in book 3 and Arys Oakheart in book 4. Even Jaime, who is an Arthur Dayne fanboy, admits that a Ser Barristan was the best swordsman in Aerys' kingsguard in book 2 and book 4. He kills the best fighters in the entire Essos at the age of 70-75. He has literally taken the entire castle garrison ALONE, twice. In the book of Kingsguard, it's mentioned that Barristan Selmy has the highest body count of any men in recorded history, and he has taken 3 digits in every battle he's been in. You're obviously basing your analysis on the show if you think Arthur Dayne is the best swordsman, and you haven't read the books. because literally nothing is known about Arthur Dayne in the books, except that Rhaegar (not the most mentally stable guy) thinks that he's the best and that once he killed the Smiling Knight, whose only feat was injuring 15 yo Jaime. Barristan is the GOAT by a country mile, based on feats, battle descriptions and reputable characters' opinions, and the comparison is not even close...

@JackulaHD Жыл бұрын
Littlefinger is quite easy to understand. He loved Catelyn truly. Whether that was true love or some kind of obsession is debatable. However, when he lost the duel and she ended up marrying Ned he realised that the dream of marrying her and living happily ever after wasn't going to happen. At that point something changed inside him and he became chaos personified. His goal now is to mess with as much as he can to amass as much power and status as possible in order to fill that Catelyn shaped void in him. It's never enough though so he keeps going bigger. When Joffrey moves against the Starks and is responsible for the death of Catelyn, Littlefinger arranges his death. Who wouldn't seek vengeance against their one true love? Sansa is still alive though and is like a mini Catelyn. While I don't believe he ever loves her his chaotic manipulation side does see it as a way of getting a taste of Catelyn, hence the kiss in this episode.
@gunkulator1 Жыл бұрын
Joffrey did not arrange the death of Catelyn and Robb. It was Tywin and Littlefinger who persuaded the Boltons and Freys to turn against him, although the ultimate blame belongs to Robb himself. His marriage to Talisa doomed his cause. Also, he was not strong enough to prevent the rift with the Karstarks. The Boltons and Freys wisely came to the realization that Robb was going to lose.

By the time Cat died, Littlefinger had already decided to pursue Sansa instead. So I'm not sure I buy his claim that it was revenge. As others have stated, Joffrey wasn't even responsible for the red wedding. He took delight in it (as did Cersei), but did not plan it. Tywin did.
@jcompton8507 Жыл бұрын
@@darth856 I agree. LF's true motivation is his vast ambition and his huge chip on his shoulder. In the past, he was treated like he, as a weak, sickly son from a very minor house, wasn't good enough for either Cat (who looked at him like a little brother) or Lysa (who wanted LF but whose father had her abort LF's child and marry Jon Arryn not long after the fight between LF and Brandon Stark and the start of the Rebellion). Since then, his goal has been to outdo everyone who was born with more status and privilege and strength and health than him and gain as much power as possible for himself. He just considered Cat (and then Sansa) as the trophy he wanted to show everyone. In a way, very similar to the way Robert felt about Lyanna...

@Eshtoc Жыл бұрын
The way Martin typically talks about matchups in the books, he doesn't really talk about who "would" win in a fight among the top-tier fighters, and on anyone's worst day, someone else could have their best. Book Jorah for instance wasn't a great jouster, but he famously won a tournament even against some top jousters. So there are a lot of fighters who "could" beat the Mountain, but it's as Bronn says - the issue with the Mountain is that if you make one careless mistake, it only takes one or two hits from him and you're done no matter how good you are. So the top-tier book fighters in terms of skill who are active when the series starts would be like Barristan and Jaime and the way it's presented suggests that they would probably be favored against the Mountain but if they slip up then that could just be it for them. Book Mountain is also described as being even more massive than show Mountain, so there's that to contend with as well. Barristan and Jaime are sort of generational talents as described in the books. Plenty of high-level fighters would have a reasonable shot, like Robert in his prime, Bronn, Drogo, the Hound, Brienne. There are also some book characters who are not in the show who are extremely high-tier and could be in that group, but I won't mention anything about them as that could be unintentional spoilers. So there are definitely a few fighters who "could" take down the Mountain, but I guess another question would be, how many of them are "likely" to defeat him 1v1? Definitely fewer. It's also a really different question when you think of weapon matchups and armor. Thinking of an earlier season where Jorah fought with one of Drogo's bloodriders and he won because to borrow from the Hound, "Jorah had armor and a big effing sword". The Mountain being able to walk around encased in full plate at his size is a huge advantage even if you're extremely skilled, so it definitely affects things whether you're thinking of a matchup including armor or not, whether weapon choices matter, etc. I think it's a lot of fun to consider all those options, personally.

The most significant part of the Sansa LF scene isn't the kiss, it's that tiny smile of acknowledgement that Sansa gives LF when he says "given the opportunity what do we do to the people who hurt the ones we love".That perfectly reflects the duality of LF's character: On one hand, the unscrupulous schemer. On the other, poor little boy from the Fingers who was smitten by his Lord Tully's daughter the moment he laid eyes on her all those years ago. It's the first time (for a fleeting sec, but nevertheless) we see a vulnerability in the armor of the most dangerous man in Westeros, according to Varys. *"Sansa was a lady at three, always so courteous and eager to please. She loved nothing so well as tales of knightly valor. Men would say she had my look, but she will grow into a woman far more beautiful than I ever was, you can see that. I often sent away her maid so I could brush her hair myself. She had auburn hair, lighter than mine, and so thick and soft… the red in it would catch the light of the torches and shine like copper."* - Catelyn, A Clash of Kings

excellent facial reactions from Pudgey. Also, her intuition about people and their future on the show is so accurate most of the time. The chemistry with Spartan is just great. When he expresses his desire of not listening to things Pudgey wants to say and she starts laughing... priceless.

I feel you. I have always loved Theon Greyjoy. His character is so complex and he goes thru these huge transformations throughout the fist 4 seasons. He has always been on my like/love list. He's always been so confused because of his upbringing. I do not agree with all his decisions, however I understand.

Fun fact: the scene with Tyrion in this episode was Pedro Pascal’s first day on set (GoT shot scenes out of order a lot). This was Pedro’s first step into the legend status we know him as now.

Pudgey is dead on in her reasoning on Littlefinger. Most fans agree he played Ned and even played Robb to a degree with the plan to have Cat. The plan wasn’t for either to die at the Red Wedding. He thrives on chaos to rise but he wanted Cat to survive. Love how you called him going for the kiss. Both your reactions to the Red Viper is awesome.

The scene between Oberyn and Tyrion is my favorite scene of acting in the entire series. Top fighters in ASOIAF, IMO. 1. Ser Arthur Dayne 2. Ser Barristan Selmy 3. Ser Jaime Lannister 4. The Mountain 5. The Hound

The Mountain is a beast but Prince Oberyn is famous for being one of the best fighters in the Seven Kingdoms. They're not really on the same level, and you can see during his talk with Tyrion that Oberyn isn't concerned at all about fighting him.

Remember what Baelish said in an earlier episode: chaos is a ladder. Getting the heads of the major houses into war causes massive chaos, and it gives him the opportunity to play the major lords off each other. That's how he climbs the ladder. It begs the question of whether, in fact, he ever did love Catelyn Stark. Would he have been able to parse the difference between the girl herself and the opportunity to marry into the Tully family? Maybe (to be charitable) or maybe not (to be realistic). I think Spartan has his number. I think Littlefinger does everything for a reason, and the reasons seldom have anything to do with sentiment.

I remember being confused on the Mountain recasting as three different actors played him. The Hound and Arya are the best duo. Dating Brienne hehe. Oberyn's speech was brilliant. Littlefinger creepy over Sansa, always covering his bases.

16:16 Bronn: If I wanted wits, I would marry you. Pudgey: Me to! Spartan: I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. 18:53 I just knew that simple question would start a lenghty discussion, users arguing and bringing up their tier lists (containing mostly guys that wasn't mentioned by Spartan/ never appeared in the show). Never change, GOT fandom! The answer is - yes. In their prime, all three of them would have a fair chance against The Mountain. 21:29 And now you know how Jorah Mormont earned his famous nickname.

Finally. You finally saw the scene I wanted you to see ever since you started falling in love with Tyrion. Everyone talks about the trial scene where he says he wished he had poisoned Joffrey, but the scene with Oberin just kills me. When he listens to Oberyn talk about how he was just a baby, and about how Cersei pinched his penis out of spite, you can see how heartbroken he is, how... I don't know... but he's simply... broken. And then, he says "Sooner or later Cersei always gets what she wants" and his eyes are filling up with tears... Peter KILLED this scene. And then, when Oberyn told him he would be his champion, you see his heartbreak turn to hope, and the little laugh that comes out of him... Good lord, I'm in tears and I've seen that scene I don't know HOW MANY TIMES. You can see why George RR Martin wanted him for the role of Tyrion

Barristan could beat the mountain even now as an old man. In his prime it wouldn't even be a challenge. The only man who could go toe to toe with him would be Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning.
@jarsky Жыл бұрын
Salmy probably couldn't, as he's fighting against brute strength and heavy armor. But Robert probably could have. In the books he was a lot taller and had a big presence with his massive hammer. He'd be able to take him with shear blunt force trauma. Cave his chest piece, smash his legs, and squash his head. In the book Robert was about 6'6 so he would have been getting close to The Mountain and The Hound
@filipgawronski4364 Жыл бұрын
nahhh, sir barristan selmy was the greatest swordsman that ever lived in Westeros, even Bronn could have a chance with the mountain who rides as he said himself, let alone the best swordsmen of westeros and Bronn is not even close to barristans swordmenship level, the moutain is not a great swordsman either he is just extremely strong (ofc we are talking about prime barristan not old man barristan and we are talking about book/lore barristan not one from the show)
@jarsky Жыл бұрын
@@filipgawronski4364 I know he is, but my point is, as Bron pointed out, if he makes a single wrong step or takes a hit then hes done. Where as book Robert at 6'6 is physically more up to the task, and doesn't need precision strikes to get between the armor which would be tough with a sword..we know the mountain isn't a great swordsman but he can just smash through many guards/blocks with his strength. Robert had the size (Ned estimated over 6 1/2ft), the strength (muscled like a maidens fantasy), he was battle hardened winning many battles and a cunning tactician. Full armor and his massive Warhammer. Robert was always the bigger threat than Salmy on the battlefield
@scientia.veritas Жыл бұрын
True. Prime Robert was a beast. He had the brute strength, yet the skill to parry attacks from someone as skilled as Rhaegar. He would even tank two-three hits from the Mountain while most men would KO in one.
@MT-UK Жыл бұрын
It’s about skill and outsmarting the opponent Selmy was easily one of the top ten fighters of ALL time and Robert would maybe make the cut but barely if you included some of the legends such as Ser Duncan, Daemon and Aemond Targaryen, Daemon Blackfyre, Cregan Stark, Arthur Dayne, Selmy etc Selmy in his prime would make mincemeat of the mountain
@MT-UK Жыл бұрын
@@filipgawronski4364 not that ever lived not even guaranteed of his time with Dayne around He’s easily high top 10 of all time yes .. but Arthur Dayne (with Dawn) beats him… Daemon Blackfyre beats him and possibly Cregan Stark Of all time is so tough in the history of Westeros but in terms of the era of the people during GoT then yes I think it’s a toss up with Arthur Dayne - if Dayne is armed with Dawn he takes it , if not Selmy takes it

I love how much tou empathasize with Theon. I was shocked at how much people hated him. He was a kid in an impossible situation and made bad choices for his dad which is what a lot of us would do in his place. Not to mention all the trauma he was put through and what that did to his mental health. I was with severe depression when I watched this show and unfortunately found him so relatable

There are several fighters who could take on the Mountain... by now you probably know, but I'll answer anyway, only including the characters you know so far. Syrio florell the dancing master who trained Arya Ser Bronn of the Blackwater Jamie Lannister with his right hand The Hound Dario Nahrys Greyworm Carl from the nights watch Jaqen Hagar Brienne of Tarth Jon snow and Oberyn Martell None apart from the hound could compete in strength, but all surpass the Mountain in terms of skill and agility.

I wasn't one of the people shaming Spartan for enjoying Cersei being slapped by Robert get I get the outcry. Let me explain. I am against her being struck by her husband and raped by her brother-lover. But I'd wholeheartedly support her spending time in that black cells then being executed. The former is steeped in millennia-old misogyny that is just really freaking hard for women to see happen to any other woman (we feel it in our gut). The latter is justice for a vile, evil murderous person. The act would be all about punishing the person for their crimes. The former is just accepted punishment for an errant woman. It's gross.

Littlefinger's quote: Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some, are given a chance to climb. They refuse, they cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.
