the Alaska's 12" guns were about equal to the larger 14" guns found on the New Mexico and other old american battleships. That means that the Alaska is like a New Mexico with almost half the reload and cruiser accuracy. That matched with the 32mm bow makes this ship incredibly good.

Almost.......Alaska and Guam (My grandfather served on CB2) 12" 50 MK 8 guns were brand new and the most expensive at the time, they fired a super heavy shell that "Matched" in capabilities to the 14" guns on the Wyoming and simliar older BB's (Generation Behind).

Just got my Alaska today a few hours ago. As a Balti enthusiast, my very first match in this ship i had 4 ships destroyed and 171k damage with 8 cities. Man what a great ship this is. My first salvo was against a yammy, and i hit it for 19k on my first salvo. This ships ap is no joke.

The Alaska had double displacement that the Baltimore had and possessed the same sized guns as the Wyoming class, but was heaver than the Wyoming.

I have GK and for the ppl thinking it’s some crazy tank think again it suffers the same thing that the Bismarck and the Tirpitz, it takes constant 11k salvos from battleships, whole bow on and angled and if you’re showing side to get those back guns into the fight, we’ll I had Iowa’s smacking me for almost 30k each time and if I tried to angle against him think again he’ll just do 10k + so it needs to be fix as usual with German bbs

Confusing, I have Norman Scott at lvl 12. With ap broadside on another cruiser, doesn't even dent it. I would choose the Baltimore over this any day. Am I missing something?

Posted a battle in my amagi. Almost stock. Love that ship and with the range slot it will be a monster. You can see where I had 2 perfect shots on iowas if only I had the range mod open. Finished around mid ranking which is good for a stock ship and lvl11 cpt

Mid ranking is not good, regardless of how upgraded your ship is. Maybe if you are bottom tier, in a stock ship, then it’s an alright result

Yoo spartan, quick tip or idea whatever u want to call it... U wouldn't need isoroku since u already have amazing penetration (for a cruiser) its like putting jaujard on the yamato lol. However u can make the argument that u want it to better pen bbs which it can... So think u should try other builds and figure out what you like

I just got this ship but have been getting absolutely pummeled every match no matter what I do, so I try being a bit more passive as I'm staying back a bit more, then I start getting abuse from someone on the chat so I literally can do anything right in this ship so do you have any ideas what I could do?

How has she been at bow tanking 16in guns? You said she's done better than the Baltimore but can still be hurt. Balti got the armor buff to tank 15in guns. I'm pretty sure the PC version of the Alaska only has 27mm of bow and stern plating so I expected them to buff it since the Baltimore in Legends now has 27.5mm. Maybe they gave Alaska 28-29mm bow and stern? I'm looking forward to it, been the focus of my research in the bureau with secondary on the GK when I have premium time which WG has been pretty generous with in the task rewards. Edit: Tbull just put up his first review and said Alaska has 32mm of bow plating which is better than the Chapayev before the nerf. I might have been wrong about the PC version's armor.

My understanding is she has 30 or even 32-mm Bow armoring here in Legends, same as Yamato and Kurfurst -- though we might need further testing & confirmation of this. The PC version does indeed have just the 27-mm of Baltimore (forum.worldofwarships.com/topic/184489-premium-ship-review-120-plus-sized-baltimore/), on the Bow / Stern - meaning it can block 15-inch guns, but things bigger than that it cannot bow-tank. But if our Legends version CAN, then it makes Alaska truly incredible (especially given the HE damage it can put out, as shown here in the vid, if it needs to be bow-on to a foe).

Why do you have epic ship xp booster on her? The xp she gains has to be converted to free xp before you can apply it to anything. And as you say ... no upgrades available.

She and her sister were basically America’s only battlecruisers (at least the only one’s completed), though never considered a capital ship and officially called a large cruiser. It’s a shame they scrapped both of them. Alaska would have been a great and unique museum ship.

They were not Battle Cruisers, they do not fit the definition. They were not built on battleship hulls but an enlarged Baltimore class hull. They did not have Battleship caliber guns, the last time the USN had 12 inch guns was the main armament for a Battleship was 1912 in the Wyoming class.

It didn’t matter that they didn’t have the armaments of the latest battleships, or the fact that they were enlarged Baltimores, or even the fact that they were not considered Capital Ships. “Large Cruisers” were just Battlecruisers of with a different name, fulfilling similar roles, using their superior firepower to take out ships smaller than them while using their speed to evade ships with heavier guns and armor.
