The Franchi SPAS-12 (Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun) is a dual-action police shotgun produced in Italy between 1979 and 2000, and imported into the US until 1994. It can be operated either as a semiautomatic or a manual pump action, as a way to allow rapid semiautomatic fire with buckshot or similar ammunition but also function manually with lower pressure less-lethal types of ammunition (rubber slugs, beanbags, tear gas, etc). The gun was purchased by a decent number of law enforcement agencies, but it is far better known for its use in movies and video games, where its distinctive military styling makes it very popular with designers and prop masters.
Still, there are a couple interesting elements worth looking at on the SPAS-12. For one thing, they were subject to a safety recall for a safety selector which could sometimes cause the gun to fire when being switched from safe to fire. And, of course, there is that hook thing on the stock. What's that for, anyway? I'll show you...

To add to the ammo types Hollywood blanks aren't powerful enough to cycle the gun in semi auto mode and that's why you almost always see them being used in pump mode in movies.

I saw one of these at a fucking pawn shop in Utah the other day. After I returned to check if there were any more firearms in stock. I noticed the Spas 12 was not there anymore. Upon asking, the guy working there said some guy came in there the other day, asked if he could look at it, sat on a chair in the shop and stared at it for a good hour, not knowing what he had in his hands. He said fuck it and ended up buying it anyways. lucky bastard.

Perhaps the double shot is him accidentally switching the auto on, then switching it back off. I heard the SPAS had a known defect where it would fire if you had a round chambered while switching. Gordon's mainly a scientist, so maybe the double is just him panicking and being clumsy (much like all the other scientists).

Try to imagine yourself in the 1990s. You get your first look at this "overpriced Italian shotgun" as you enter a gun store. It hangs on the wall, lightly shining, looking like an ordinary dressed-up pump action shotgun. And you keep your wallet pocketed because you think that maybe it's just an Italian knock off based on your past experiences - just like those Uberti reproductions. But no, not the SPAS-12. You stare at it, and it stares right back. And that's when the surprise comes. Not from the front, but the foregrip. Because SPAS-12 is a semi-auto/pump-action, you see, it uses a gas cycling, tactical design and it is out in force today. And it hits you with this... A four-figure price tag, like a debt, on your bank account. He doesn't bother to charge you MSRP like, say, a Remington 1100 or a Mossberg 930... no, no. He slashes at your budget here, or here... Or maybe across the belly, hitting your food budget. The point is, you're broke and smiling when you start to shoot it. So, you know, try to show a little respect.

A friend of mine had one back in the eighties and I have shot hundreds of rounds through it they are loads of fun ! The owners manual showed that the hook was for shooting one handed around corners and not exposing yourself to enemy fire . We always thought that was kind of funny considering that it is called a "sporting" purpose automatic shotgun . Also when the temperature got below around 0 degrees the buffers would crack and the gun wont fire til you replace them, which is a problem in Wisconsin . Also there was no mention of the magazine cutoff switch ,

I had one of these for years. Mine had the push button safety. It held 8-9 shells and was very reliable. The pump mode was also good for using breaching rounds and tear gas shells. I used mine for a while shooting in three gun matches and it was difficult to load quickly. When you use a shotgun for combat or competition you should always load what you shoot i.e. engage three targets, load three shells immediately. Shotguns will leave you high and dry at the most inopportune moments if you don't. NOW to the problem. To load a shell a button on the forward left side of the receiver must be depressed to allow the shell entry for the magazine. Mine had a mushroom shaped button. The only fast way to do this procedure took two hands. Roll weapon on its back, cup receiver with left hand and depress the button, load required shell(s) with the right hand and release and resume firing position. AWKWARD. My wife had trouble with this and it was something that would have been bad in an actual combat environment so I sold it. If you became wounded it would have been potentially fatal also. The sights worked well and she printed slugs beautifully out to 100meters. I NEVER experienced a malfunction with this weapon either. I do wish I still had it. I replaced it with a wonderful Benelli Shotgun with Ghost Ring Sights and it has been more than excellent to my needs. Love your videos and channel.

Hi Ian, One thing I had always thought about this gun, and I may be totally wrong but, you said that with the stock collapsed you can not use the sights. What I had thought was, if you remove the stock 'hook' then you can actually use the sights looking through that hole left from where that hook would be. Maybe I'm wrong, my experience with shotguns is rather limited... Really, I'm just curious if that is possible(assuming you flatten the actual butt plate when you collapse the stock, leaving the entire stock parallel with the top of the barrel/receiver).
@ForgottenWeapons
