Great episode as always! I remember the dawn of Todd Toys and the first Spawn toyline very well. Had the initial Spawn figure himself and the Hamburger head variant. Still have that huge Malebolgia figure in my “monsters” collection. More importantly, this episode brought back some great memories of two old friends of mine (both of them brothers) who were obsessed with the Spawn comics and the early toy lines…since they’ve both passed away, thank you for stirring up those warm memories of them with this episode. Cheers fellas!

@@Pegwarmers I think it's very interesting that y'all point all the toys that were peg warmers because I get to see toys that were never even on the shelf when I was a kid ie the mission impossible figs knew they existed but never saw them in the store growing up and I was in the action figure aisle all the time growing up

Fantastic episode! This was such a blast from the past. I used to be on the spawn boards as well and had so much fun there. I have a ton of the older spawn figures and they are still among my favorites. The sculpt and paint are unmatched.

Spawn toys was a game changer in the 90s. Every other toy company looked like jabronis next to "todd toys" and later McFarlane toys.

Spawn is my favorite comic book character. I was first introduced to Spawn from a Wizard Comic Guide back in 1996. I went to an after school day care and some kid brought it there. I lived in a small town at the time but I was lucky enough to find a few Spawn comics at a local gas station. The ones I was able to get my hands on I read multiple times, I still have a few of them. But they aren't in the best condition. Later, I bought the first 20 issues online and some random ones later on if I came across them. I also have a few of the figures still in the boxes. Most I bought on discount at Hot Topic or so many years ago.

I was 9 years old when the Spawn movie came out, and my adolescent little brain thought it was the most badass thing ever created, so of course I instantly needed the toys. I had Spawn, unmasked Spawn, proto-Spawn(the one with the trench coat, aka "crispy Simmons"), mercenary Al Simmons with that sick backpack rocket launcher, Violator, and I'm not sure but I might have had Violator in clown form for a short time. In other words, I'm really looking forward to this episode.

I remember seeing the first mcfarlane stuff at comic shops in the 90s and seeing the rise of the ips made into post 2000 beautiful sculpts. Purged most old stuff, but still got a couple of things from back then. 😄

Todd McFarlane changed the toy industry back in the 90's. He managed to produce a line of toys that even adults were interested at and also introduced variants. In a few years, other toy companies started to emulate Todd's style. I'm not sure toy lines such as Marvel Legends would have been made without Todd's influence. I still have a lot of the old Spawn toys in their packaging and I'm happy that Spawn figures like the Mandarin & Ninja Spawn are being remade for this generation.

Kay Bee always ended up having some McFarlane figures on sale in our (relatively) small city. Likely, parents of small children were put off by some of the more graphic figures, and not many locals knew much about the anime coming out at the time, so they'd warm pegs for a while and then get discounted. I had some of the Spawn stuff, the Ryoko, Naomi Armitage, and Vash anime figures, the fish tank with the three main Danger Girl characters, and Ichabod Crane. I also had the 12 inch Angela, because it was on sale. I think my mother even got me one of the Quake II figures. Some of those plastics had a bad habit of bending under the figure's own weight... That's why most of mine are in a box, now, instead of on display. How about She-Spawn 2, who had that enormous gun that was so big you had to carefully pose her limbs in juuuuuust the right position, so it would counterbalance the gun and allow her to stand?

There were two different Spawn/Batman crossovers that were put out around the same time, one by each publisher, as mentioned. The more popular Image one that had the MacFarlane artwork was written by Frank Miller. The DC one had three writers and was drawn by frequent Miller collaborator Klaus Janson, who has a style that is the opposite of flashy and doesn’t appeal to Spawn fans at all. I don’t remember if it was actually any good at all, but it seems like a book that absolutely no one asked for.

Honestly I kind of miss the Spawn toys that were meant to just be displayed. I can only imagine how badass the Mortal Kombat figures would be if they weren't meant to be played with, and just used as basically statues. Maybe I'm the minority here..

Steel Molds that produce an action figure with multiple points of articulation are very expensive.
