Missed this part of the livestream, but as a math teacher who previously hated math for the reasons you stated in the stream, I just have to comment on why we ask students to show/explain their methods; it's in order for us to be able to help them if they get a step in their calculations wrong. I currently teach 10 year olds and might, for example, ask them to calculate 6*4000. If that child gives me a correct answer (24 000) on a test, they get one point. If they are also able to explain that they got this answer by multiplying 6*4 and then just adding the three 0:s at the end, they get another point. As a second task, I might then ask the child to calculate 6*4211 - at which point I have a lot of students in my current classes who are superbly good at math, but forget to add the extra thousand that comes from multiplying 6*200 and thus - in the stress of an exam situation - end up with the answe 24 266 instead of 25 266. If I as a teacher just see that answer, I can guess where the student went wrong, but if the student is able to explain their process with a written method or spoken words, I can also point it out to them much more easily. So yeah, for someone who is good at math and rarely does calculations wrong in their head (myself included), this extra thing sucks. But for the students who could get good at math if they learned to take it a bit slower and think things through - which is usually the majority of a class - this is what will raise them from a possible failing grade to a top grade Anyway, enough teacher ranting for tonight. Back to the video!
