I had the privilege of working on SNES games for Sculptured Software/Acclaim Entertainment. The 65816 on the Super Nintendo is essentially an 8 bit processor with an 8 bit external data bus, but with the ability to handle 16 bit data internally. The 68000 on the Sega Genesis is a 16 bit processor externally that can handle 32 bit data internally. The 68000 can do more per instruction, and has a much larger instruction set, which is why many programmers like it. However, the 65816 can execute instructions faster, which is why clock speed is not a good comparison. This is why the 65816 based Apple II GS was able to have an interface similar to the 68000 based and much faster Apple Macintosh. I loved programming both chips. I definitely prefer the specs of the Super Nintendo. On these systems the programmers didn't have the benefit of operating systems or high level languages. That meant you had to manage everything on the system yourself and program the games in machine code, which is more difficult. The bottom line is that it took more work to make games on these systems.
@dirty-moto5 жыл бұрын
8:42 Regarding the cartridge slot, later models do *not* pop off. You can tell the difference on the newer versions because the sides of it with the screw holes are black plastic. Hope that helps some of you to not accidentally break your system! Sorry if it was already mentioned in the other 250 comments, though.

Back when I was young. Our super Nintendo's power port broke and my dad said he could fix it. We were able to do a bit of moding that it would use the same connecting port as the nes and also cut the connecter off the power adapter to put one that would match to the new port on the system. Still working to this day.

weird to see a Sony chip on a Nintendo board? Not at all! Samsung made the main processor for several of the iPhones. lots of companies make components for competitors' products
@logicalfundy6 жыл бұрын
Samsung also makes the OLED on the iPhone X. What's interesting about Sony is that there's a big story behind the original PlayStation: Sony was going to make a CD-ROM accessory for the Super Famicom (Japanese equivalent of the SNES), but Nintendo decided to go with Philips instead. Apparently that really made some people at Sony really angry, and basically in retaliation they made the PlayStation, and the rest is history.

We had both systems growing up. We got the Snes first and then the Sega the following year. In those days the same game could be drastically different between the two systems far as playability, graphics, sound etc. We tried to balance out the games on both systems, Sega had a few flagship titles, Sonic and tons of sports games seemed faster, but in the end it seemed like the snes had just a better variety of games in its library and more polished. What was the other system TG16? I tried that one too but out of all these still snes. Maybe it's where I grew up from atari, the nes, gameboy I seen the progression. Vs I never knew anyone whoever had any Sega consoles to get accustomed to.

The SNES was my family's 4th gaming system. Atari 2600, a gaming computer that I can not remember the name of because I was too young and barely got to use it, an NES on launch and then the SNES. Compared to everything that came before it, the SNES felt like the XBOX One X. It was the first console I can remember playing that felt like it was taking a REAL step forward. The jump from 8-bit to 16 bit was a HUGE deal. I got Mario All Stars with the system and playing what essentially was the first 'remake/remaster' for consoles, Super Mario Bros. looked AMAZING in its new skin. I actually prefer the All-Stars version of SMB and Lost Levels (SMB2 Japan) it feels the same to play to me (I'm not a pro speedrunner counting pixels) but looks 5 times as good. Add in the FX chip and you could really see that Nintendo was trying to assure consumers that they weren't going to do what Atari, Colecovision and Intellivison did by crashing the market with shit systems and games. The NES/SNES basically saved gaming in the western hemisphere. SNES is still my favorite console of all time to this day. So much innovation, tons of great games, a legendary controller that is still considered one of the best ever and the first real glimpse of 3d gaming with Star Fox and Stunt Race FX... This console deserves a place on the console Mount Rushmore.

I could watch this kind of video all day. Like, I know all this stuff already, but it's just fun watching these old consoles get torn apart and have a knowledgeable dude talking about it. Too bad it's not the cooler version of the SNES here where the soundchip is a modular part in its own little awesome casing.
@souta956 жыл бұрын
No mention of the revision changes... I am aware of three major revisions. Most consoles are the first revision which is in the larger case with a larger PCB that is almost the size of the entire case, next Nintendo shrunk the PCB but kept the case the same size, then they released the third version that was cost reduced and smaller overall. The final version had no RF out on board and could not output S-Video (I think you could use an S-Video cable but would get a composite signal). Also, the final version is sometimes called the second version since the first two had the exact same exterior appearance.

Favorite system in the 8 or 16 bit eras? Has to be the c64 for me. You had all the Llamasoft stuff of the era for it, the wonderful, wonderful Flimbo's Quest, among others, and most of the Speccy games that are fondly remembered today along with all of the good stuff that was made specifically for it - You had your Dizzy's your Manic Miner's, and so forth. Some fascinating colour and resolution stuff going on compared to it's main competitor, the Sinclair Spectrum, as I recall, too. And then there was the masterful SID chip to handle the sound, which I've seen referred to as the best synthesizer of it's type.

I remember our first system, the pong thingy which grew so you had different games and white dash's manipulated and it was called "sports" and very dire. Atari's VCS was the game changer, the Intellivision despite being a fairly forward system just could not keep up with Atari. Its weird too as our first VCS's weren't called Atari's but came in a box with Ingersoll-Rand branding and my mum was tasked by her newspaper to do a review on the VCS so cool stuff we got a free one with a selection of games. I remember then the MSX attempts plus Oric's and Atmos's and the BBC but by this time I had graduated from my humble firestarting meltalot ZX80 to a ZX81 which was slightly less combustible (the ram packs were the new fire fun devices). The ZX80, grandfather of the Spectrum only came in kit form at first and it was a dire dire machine, someone cheaped out on the power block inside and it used to get sooooooo hot and yes it melted and it caught fire often... happy days :)

@retrosoul87706 жыл бұрын
Exactly, they're all timelessly great. I'd surely argue the Gen and Snes were better but that's only because the larger install base created more games for the both of them. The battle between them is easily the most contentious console war of all-time.

You'd argue that the Gen and SNES were better, while you were doing that I would just play Y's, Bonk, Air Zonk, Bomberman and other favorite memories from my childhood. Even the shitty one's like Dark Wing Duck. My point was and still is, games. I don't count exclusives, i play them. Don't care about the install base because I am the install base.
@retrosoul87706 жыл бұрын
Yeah Gex is Ps1, played the game literally the other day coincidentally, underrated platformer (much preferred to the 3D sequels) because it came out during the era of "let's ignore the beautiful next gen 2D sprite art in favor of blocky polygons yeah!". Aat I couldn't agree more, it's all about quality over quantity and enjoying the games, though quantity is important too when attempting objectivity, I say "attempting" because it's essentially impossible lol. And I'd never take those childhood memories away from you, they are precious indeed and create the fondness that ppl have to the systems.

Oh man this reminds me of my old SNES. The power port was broken, so i soldered the power supply directly into the board. The power switch broke, so i drilled a hole in the side of the case and would just short the wires to turn it on and off. And the reset switch was jammed down so i just removed it. And well unshorted then re shorted the wires on the power switch when i wanted to reset it. Then later on in the life of the console i broke the controller port. Rather than trying to get a replacement i just got a serial 9pin RS232 cable, cut it in half. Soldered one end into the console and the other end onto a controller that had the plug damaged. Then used a gender changer to connect the 2 ends together to connect the controller to the system. On the plus side too i could use more RS232 cables and gender changers to extend the controller cable if needed. Not long after doing that i used to the 2 spare pins of the 9pin connector and cable to wire the reset switch upto the controller with a bodged in switch All in all it was a pretty banged up old system but still works to this day. I wouldnt want to ake it to an airport however

I've cleaned the port with compressed air along with a paint brush dipped in alcohol and cleaned the av port and used the cable on a gcn, it worked fine.
