The influence of Indo-European in Malay is astounding. No doubt it comes from the Indian influence from thousands of years ago.
@CikguLan Жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s correct, as in many languages around the world which are influenced by various other languages. Actually the Arabic language has strong influence in the Malay language and even in various Indian languages/dialects.
@StalkedByLosers Жыл бұрын
@@CikguLan it would make sense that Arabic also has influence as Islam spread through India and converted many ancient kingdoms. I have no doubt that Islam simply spread through the reach of ancient Indian trade routes. The fact that Malaysia still today has a strong and very ancient Islamic tradition reflects this history. The Spanish and Portuguese called the South East Asians they encountered that were Muslims "Morro" because in Iberia they were once conquered by Muslim Moores. Morro is what you call a Moore (aka Morrocan) in Spanish/Portuguese. Seeing these Muslims on South East Asia evoked that memory and they mislabeled them Morro. I love these stories. South East Asia is rich in history and most of the world is oblivious. Thanks for the video!
@CikguLan Жыл бұрын
@@StalkedByLosers well said ! You are spot on. Somehow it could be thoerised, not mine obviously, that Arab traders already plied these routes before Islam, before 1500 years ago. But, yes, the Portuguese and Spanish were probably surprised that Islam reached this part of the world at that time.

@CikguLan interesting...non muslim Arabs... I would like to learn more. I never heard such a thing. They are always construed as one in the same. BTW my native language is Portuguese. This is how I recognize the Indo-European words in Malay. I hear it in Tamil and Hindi too.
@CikguLan Жыл бұрын
@@StalkedByLosers yes, there are still Arab Christians, Coptic Arabs, and Jewish Arabs. There are so many Portuguese words that have been assimilated into Malay, though as a Malay speaker I would not be able to identify them but I’m sure you would easily identify them.

Selamat! How do we say "Miss" in Malay. And human rights consultant profession in Malay? Thank you :)
@CikguLan Жыл бұрын
Hi, apa khabar ? Miss in Malay is Cik. The pronunciation is more like “Cheyk” similar to the “Cha-“ in “Change”. The “k” in “Cik” is a glottal stop, the “k” is not sounded. Consultant is “perunding” (pe-roon-ding), human is manusia (ma’-noo-siya) and rights is”hak asasi” (huck a-sussy)with a glottal stop on the “k”. So putting it all together is “Perunding Hak Asasi Manusia”.

Hi cikgu, right now i am not working, so i think my answer will be "Saya tidak kerja", but when i use google translate, it is "Saya tidak bekerja". I check kerja and bekerja mean "work", can your help to explain why its bekerja, not kerja?
@CikguLan5 ай бұрын
@@Hidro13 Yes, sometimes Google is correct! The prefix, be, is almost the same as the ‘ing’ in English. Saya tak bekerja is the correct Malay, but it is much more formal. Saya tak kerja, is the more conversational way. In conversational Malay, some prefixes and suffixes are dropped to make it sound less for mal and also just to simplify the sentence. The explanation for the differences in formal and conversational Malay is that for many hundreds of years, Malay is the language amongst traders from all over the world; Portuguese, Dutch, British, Arabs, Indian, Chinese etc. In order to trade efficiently, they all use Malay as the language denominator. Since it is not their native language, the Malay used by these worldwide traders tend to be simplified. And the Malays also used the simplified version to ease communications amongst the traders.
