Trying to get my brain to change gears and and preparse so I can understand him better I just googled "chinese english accent" and this was the first video and it's extremely helpful.

Something I've been thinking is that there isn't one single Chinese accent. A foreign accent comes about because the pronunciation of the native language is put onto the target language. Russians speaking English pronounce English with elements of Russian (rolled "R"s, lack of articles, for examples), and a French accent would import French pronunciation onto English. A Chinese accent would thus bring elements of Chinese pronunciation onto English, however, there are many dialects of Chinese, many are mutually incomprehensible. Nanjing Hua speakers can't understand a word of Chengdu Hua, for example. I would imagine the way a Beijinger (with the piratey "R" sounds) would pronounce English differently than a Guangzhou Ren who grew up with Cantonese.

Partially true, not all. You Don't know how popular English education or learning is right now in China. For decades, English has been the standard second language in schools cross all grades. People are getting more and more fluent in daily English, well, still, British English. People From south China may struggle with pronunciation as you just said in this video due to their own accent in Chinese which changed the structure of their tones, similar to India English. A lot of people don't distinguish the sounds of 'r', 'j', 'y' , 's' 'sh'.

Indeed, as a language that has developed independently, Chinese features short syllables and consecutive explosive sounds distinct from English. Therefore, Chinese speakers who aren't proficient in English tend to speak it with Chinese habits, which sounds quite awkward. However, due to the wide range of pronunciations in Chinese, Chinese people are the only ones in East Asia who can pronounce R and F correctly

@nicoleraheem11954 жыл бұрын
4:07 那个 kinda sounds like Nigga. When I first heard it and read what it meant I had to laugh. It's just amazes me how what can mean one thing on one side of the world, means something completely different on another side of the world. And what one may take offense to, another may not yet we worry our little heads over semantics. I was really searching for a video to help me understand tones and accents in Chinese so to help me advance with my Mandarin studies and I came across your video. It's humorous but I get nothing but the truth from it and I totally understand because I do the same thing with ENGLISH when learning other languages to help me with pronunciation. But, with using this method, it kinda has that Pinyin effect; you can't depend on it.
@JunBienLaw4 жыл бұрын
Its good that you are learning Mandarin, it will definitely benefit you in the future. Watching this video might not help you, the major getaway is that transliteration is factor of Mandarin Accent. And good that you pick up 那个 as Nigga. LOL When you start to pick up a new language with English as a help, its recommended that progressively you have to avoid using English and start to use Chinese words to help you on pronunciation, grammar and vocab. Happy Learning :)
@nicoleraheem11954 жыл бұрын
@@JunBienLaw I'm not sure how much of a benefit it would be for me as a black woman😬😬. We all can't be teachers and translators😭...but it's fun to learn. Yes, I agree with you. I've expressed the same thing above. "Can't depend on it." That learning method can only get one so far.😭 It was exactly what I did the first two weeks of my self study lessons.😭 I was all over the place but I finally developed a structural plan: *Learn sentence structure(SVO)+ build vocabulary + replay pronunciation video 525,600(RentJoke) times 😭 I'll be taking Chinese language this summer, in college,😬so, I know they are going to have me learn that part of the language I skipped over: Stroke names😂 It's really for entrainment purposes. People can be so judgey with blacks and I'm already anti sometimes sooooooooooooooo, idk maybe I'll one day meet Donnie Yen and be his second wife. Who knows😀😀😀😂
@JunBienLaw4 жыл бұрын
@@nicoleraheem1195 What?? Black can't be teachers and translators? Thats racist. Anyhow, its a good learning curve for you to pick up a new language. Imagine that first two weeks would lead you to a more structured plan of nailing it. Great learning plan, but I would suggest to start watching Chinese Drama on netflix, or Chinese songs. Maybe start to mingle with Chinese people? I believe there are plenty Chinese people in your area, like Chinese people nowadays are every where. Believe me, if you try to speak Mandarin to them, they will be intrigued and very welcome to talk to you or even make good friends :D Anyhow, I might not understand your problem on racism. But I believe that colors are to impress not to be biased. I believe you have every potential and prospect to do anything you like :D P.S. I think this is mostly a Cantonese speaker English account to be honest. After all there are a whole bunch of Cantonese descendents who live in different countries so ppl thought it was Chinese accents. Actually Chinese ppl have different mother tongues that influenced their English accent such as Mongolian speakers, Shanghainese speakers, Hokkien speakers, Sichuanese speakers, Manchurian Korean speakers etc. they are all speaking different English accents. Cultures are very different as well. So I think it is probably not accurate to say 'Chinese English accent'.
