The general advice would be that it’s fine to connect speakers with a higher impedance to an amplifier capable of operating with a lower impedance, but what you shouldn’t do is connect speakers with a lower impedance (say, 4 ohms) to an amplifier with a higher minimum impendence (10 ohms, for example). Today many amplifiers can handle a range of ohm ratings usually between 6 to 16 ohms.

Can we connect this 6 ohms speaker to the power amp which rated as 4 ohms@2300 w per channel ? Will it blow up the power amp ? Or power amp will only delivery certain % of power to drive this 6 ohms speaker only ? Kindly advice . Appreciated to ur kind help n assistant . Wish U hv a great day ahead

My speakers are 6 ohms at the maximum power handling is 300 watts less clipping. I am using 400 watts rms. These speakers are very efficient which could be used easily with 100 watts rms. Danger with any loud speakers is don't over drive the amp into the clipping mode which harms both components. Better off with extra power than less power. JBL use to put in the owners manuals with the speakers, danger low power! So true!

There was a time (1970's/80's) when most amps (receivers, integrated and power) easily drove speakers rated from 4 ohms on up. The amp switched internally between 4 and 8 ohm impedances. Even lowly 15wpc receivers could drive 4 ohm loads. Most amps were rated at more power into 4 than 8 ohms. The sticky wicket is that speaker impedance varies with frequency and speakers are generally labeled 8 or 4 ohm "nominal" impedance. Still though, it's not uncommon for 8 ohm speakers to dip to 5 ohms at some frequencies. One caveat, never connect pairs of 4 ohm speakers in parallel to a transistor amp as this will require 2 ohms. Few amps can provide this. Interesting video, lucidly explained in your own inimitable way.

I'm still using my Hitachi SR-804 receiver that I purchased (new) in 1979. I know some Kenwood receivers from 1990's had an impedance switch on back for speakers that were either 8 or 4 ohms. Most 1970's receivers switched internally, a much better idea. What amp do you have? And what speakers do you use?@@KFM197

Finally great video.. Still I have a question to ask, my home cinema is very budget, I bought all staff cheap ( looking for good deals locally) my amp is Yamaha RX -V673 ( 7.1 - 6 & 8 ohms) I connected all 5 pioneer S-11 150 W RMS 6ohm speakers + active subwoofer. I was able to get another set of pioneer S-11+ active subwoofer. My plan is to add two more channels (7.1) and second subwoofer for extra coverage 7.2. What if I would like to use spare speakers (x3) .I mean connect two speaker per channel ( let's say front, left right would be double up) Having all that sound come from different angles is the ideal experience but how my amplifier will handled this? I'm not pushing to high volume. How I should connect this speakers parallel or series? I'm lucky I get amplifier for 10£, one set of pioneer 20£, second set 30£ ;) Total 60£ I love sound from Netflix/ Disney with this home theatre. I connected all with vandamme cable's (free -lucky me) would be great to read your opinion. Thank you

@eyeswideopen6151 no if you want all the power possible from your amp you combine both subs together and wire it to one positive and one negative output. Your manual will tell you which one to use. A monoblock amp doesn't have left or right outputs. Monoblock means "One". You take plug 1 wire to your positive (red) of the sub and connect it to the positive of the other sub. You do the same for the negative (black). Then you take 1 wire of positive and wire of negative to the positive and negative of your amp. Now you're in 1 ohm and you're getting all the power you need

omg this is so wrong. the speaker isnt asking for more "power" from the receiver. it gives less resistance. its exact the opposite. on a 8 0hms speaker the receiver has too push harder. it pushes against more resistance. with 4 ohms it has too push less. so, more current flows on 4 ohm wich is more taxing for the amp but this will also give your more OUTPUT. your result is correct, but your reasoning why is wrong.

Correct. Which may be fine as long as it's 8 ohm rating matches your 8 ohm speakers. Say your 8 ohm speaker is rated at 150 Watts and the amp does 150 Watts at 8 ohms and 300 Watts at 4 ohms, it's still giving the correct power to your speakers

yeah his result is correct but his reasoning is wrong. see the speaker as a garden hose where water is flowing through. voltage is the pressure of the water and impedance is if you pinch the hose with your fingers. if you pinch it more (8 vs 4). less water will flow. at 0 ohms all water will flow without impedance. so thats when the amp has too pump out most watts/power. the pressure/voltage always stays the same.

The amplifiers in the world today are fairly wonderful beast and players of such beasts in many levels. An amplifier is just what it is. It's amplifiers something in this case it is an electrical current that is transferred into sound. Amplifiers out there these days are magnificent to the point that they are rated down to so if an amplifier says it's 1 ohm rating is that's what it is you can put a 4-ohm speaker on a 1 ohm speaker amplifier, you can put a multiplicity of 4 ohm speakers onto a 1 ohm amplifier and in fact wire them correctly to get 1 ohm. The sky's the limit. The Ohms on the amplifier must be less then the value of what is on the speaker.

The information in this video is 100% BS. There's not even a basic understanding as to how this stuff works. Its really painful to watch. Lets start with resistance ratings on speakers. An 8 ohm speaker is not an 8 ohm load. Its an average. The amount of power an amp produces is based oh how much resistance the speaker shows the amp, and the amount of resistance the speaker shows the amp is based on frequency. So, if you ask a speaker to play a high note, it may be something like 10 ohms. Any notes the speaker is asked to play above that note will be higher than 10 ohms, and the lower the note, the lower the resistance. The 8 ohm rating on that speaker is only 8 ohms at 1 particular frequency. That's it. By itself, that 8 ohm rating is practically useless. If you take 10 speakers all rated at 8 ohms at 100 watt power handling, they will all present a different load to the amp. Some of them may be very easy to drive, while others may be very difficult. The lower the resistance, the harder the amp has to work. Knowing that, we should be looking at a much more relevant number. If you look on the spec sheet for your speaker, you will see another ohm's rating. That's the lowest amount of resistance the speaker can drop down to. The listing will look something like, 8 ohms nominal (nominal means average), 3 ohms. That 2nd, lower number is the important one. That tells you that no matter what happens, the lowest resistance the speaker can show the amp is 3 ohms. So, if you are looking at 2 speakers and one is rated at 8 ohm (nom), 3 ohms at 100 watts power handling and the other is 8 ohms (nom), 5 ohms at 100 watts PH, the 2nd speaker will be much easier for the amp to drive even though both speakers are rated at 8 ohms at 100 watts PH. Why are we only looking at resistance? How sensitive the speaker is, is just as important. The higher the number, the easier the speaker is to drive. IF one speaker is 89db and the other is 94db, the 94db speaker will be much easier to drive. In general, ported enclosers are much easier to drive than speakers is sealed enclosures. Crossover order is also important. A speaker that uses 3rd order crossovers are going to be easier to drive than ones that use first order xovers. There's other factors, as well, but you get the idea. Now we need to talk about amplifier power. Power amplifier ratings are the biggest scam in the audio industry. There is no standard that everyone in the industry is forced to use so manufacturers are left to rate their own products however they see fit. Just like in the speaker example above, you can take 10 amps all rated for the same amount of power (100 watts into 8 ohms, for example), and if you measure them all the same way, every one will be different. How much different depends on how honest the manufacturer is. You can get a thousand watt amp at Walmart as part of a home theater in a box for $99, or you can buy one that costs more than your car. There is far too much information on these topics to handle in a post like this. Entire books have been written on it. I've given enough info here to get you started. From this point forward, do not take my word for any of this. First, fact check me. All the examples I've listed above contain information that can be pulled out of a textbook on basic audio. Confirm what I'm telling you to be true. Beyond that, if you are looking to buy a pair of speakers, and don't know what type of amp to get, look to the people that makes the speakers. They know all of the games that are played with power amp ratings. They usually list some basic recommendations. Speaker manufacturers know that if you don't have an amp that's powerful enough to run their speakers, you won't be happy with them. So, start with what they recommend. Unfortunately, these youtube videos are absolutely ridiculous.

Your speakers have coils that have a certain resistance. When you plug your speakers into your amplifier, the amplifiers know the resistance of the voice coil and that's how it knows it ohms rating

What is the equation of finding the wattage that a speaker will output when connected to an amp at a lower ohm? Ie. how many watts will a 100 watt 8 ohm speaker actually output when connected to an amp pushing 100 watts at 4 ohms? Just curious - these numbers might not make any sense in the real world - but for the sake of finding the relationship?

They play great for a few months and then turn to static. I am in the process of shopping for some new speakers. I feel that I am doing something wrong for the speaker to keep going out so soon. So my amp i am biying is rated 8ohms 160 watt per channel or 4 ohms i thinks its 250 watts so i should be able to drive a tower 4ohms 200 watts easily? Maybe a strange question, but in a cabinet with a tweeter, a midrange and a woofer, they all have impedance ratings, and how does that work in terms of figuring out what each individual speaker's ohm rating should be? I am replacing both the midranges and woofers in a couple of Infinity Reference Four cabinets (keeping the tweeter), and the Reference Four is rated at 6 ohms. I know these speakers aren't connected in series inside the cabinet (couldn't be if the total rating is only 6 ohms) but if they're connected in parallel inside the cabinet that would result in only 2.6 ohms. So I guess I don't understand how they are actually connected individually inside the cabinet. I have an Onkyo receiver from the early 90s that's a beast and has switching for both 4 and 8 ohm loads, and I'm just planning to connect each speaker to its own connection. Sorry for the long wind, but would you think that 8 ohm midranges and woofers would be the way to go?
@Kpaceguy
@Kpaceguy Жыл бұрын
When you add speakers together you just have to wire them in a way that they don't dip below your intended ohm load OR just buy speakers with all the same ohms Three 8 ohm speakers is still one 8 ohm final load to the amplifier but the power rating is divided by 3. So not only do you need your speakers to achieve the right ohm load, you also need your amplifier to have enough juice that all speakers are satisfied with

@@Kpaceguy Yes, thank you, I was thinking all speakers having the same impedance made the most sense, but I didn't know that 3 8-ohm speakers would still represent an 8-ohm load to the amp. It's been a LONG time since I had electronics in high school. 😉😉
@Kpaceguy
@Kpaceguy Жыл бұрын
@Kenneth Williams let me correct myself. Three 8 ohm speakers won't be 8 ohms it'll be just under 3 ohms. You'll want to get speakers that are dual voice coil. For example three 6 ohm dual voice coil speakers cam be wired down to 4ohms which a lot of amps can handle now a days. You need to be able to wire in series/parallel to get the right ohms

Most speakers that have three speakers inside a cabinet also have a mini crossover inside the cabinet that separate the frequencies and reduce or increase the resistance (ohms) as needed to get the final rating. I would hook it up back into the crossover the way it was and check the new total ohm load. Unless the crossover fried in which you will need to buy a new one then hook it up the way it was and check the new total ohm load at the back of the speaker and go with that number as the resting ohm load. Remember that the crossover usually reduces the amount of power going to your tweeters and mids to match the speaker they used in that cabinet. That is why, if you are changing speakers or brands, you might want to upgrade your crossover board, but I wouldn't take it out and run each speaker to your amp. That would run way too much power to your mids and tweeters as all three would be receiving the same power from the amp. Of course your woofers are going to need more power, the mids less, and the tweeters much less.

The amp knows what to do based off the speaker you connect to it. You don't need to do anything

my current AV receiver is a Dennon 135w at 8 ohms , my front stage speaker is connected on a 3 channel external amplifier . My surround speaker is rated at 4 ohms and my Height speakers are rated to 2 ohms , this the only speakers I have connected in to my receiver since the left right and center speaker are connected to a external amp in this case I'm ok with that kind of setting ? my external amp is rated at 150w each channel at 8ohms and 400w at 4 ohms each driving channel
