Speaker Replacement 2014 Ford Fusion

This video shows the replacement of speakers on a 2014 Ford Fusion, using new 6 1/2 in speakers from Alpine purchased from Crutchfield. I will show all my steps to make my car speakers thump. I’m a bit late on this but is your stereo the stock stereo? If not could you tell me the info on the stereo? Mine came with a tiny 4 in screen I’m looking to upgrade. Thanks!

Yes, this is the stock stereo. When I purchased the speakers from Crutchfield, they had a compatibility selector that showed three different stereos for the Ford Fusion. I confirmed my stereo with one of the three options and then I was able to confirm the compatibility of the new speakers to my stereo.

@@matthewschultz7945 to make use of those speakers, you didn't need a small amplifier? Seems like the factory stereo wouldn't put out enough wattage to really make use of those upgraded speakers you put in. What are your thoughts on that?

@@ArlowFarrell no amplifier needed. Bass response is pretty good with the stock stereo and no amp. If you want more thump, then adding a sub with an amp would be the way to go.

Good call! No need to get crazy. It's really nice these days that the manufacturers have the aftermarket in mind ( especially for such mass produced vehicles ) & the aftermarket does great because, not always but usually, they think of things like mount hardware, adapters & harness/wire connectors. If they don't, it's easy to source info from places, like Crutchfield, Best Buy (automotive side), Amazon/eBay Automotive, or a local car audio shop. For some time, I've used Sonic Electronix & they're pretty user friendly as well. No doubt, because they work so closely with Crutchfield I'd guess ha

Does your fusion have tweeters in the door? And if so did you swap them?

@@nathancotton8020 yes, I do have tweeters in the door. I tried swapping them out, but the plastic molding for the tweeter was unique to the stock tweeter. It would take a lot of work to replace. My tweeters were still sounding good, so I didn’t replace them.

@@01anton16 I used Alpine SPE-6000 speakers for the rear. They are two-way speakers (tweeter integrated in the speaker).

Two questions: Are there speakers in the front dash also? Are those new speakers more resilient to the forces that blew out the originals? I got this car when my wife got a new one for herself. It gets much better MPG for work commute. Our son blew the speakers out a few years ago. She was just living with it. I can't. I'm trying to keep it nice and use it another 3-4 years.

There are small tweeters in the upper part of the door. Tweeters produce the high frequency sounds and don’t blow out like the large speakers that produce the low notes. My tweeters still sound good and didn’t need to be replaced. Also, they sit in a specific molded plastic fitting that would be hard to marry up with a new tweeter.

Did you find that the stock head unit and the new speakers created enough bass without adding an amp , every where I look says I will need to add an amp or else it will be to much highs with no bass

@@jessyhassard8954 more power is always better for bass. No doubt. But I found the bass response to be pretty good. I wouldn’t add an amp just to drive these speakers. The head unit is sufficient. It won’t shake the windows of the car next to you, but it will be plenty good.

SUPER Dope that Crutchfield supplies a harness plug in! I'm amused that the video speed up with audio (at least over mobile phone speakers) sounds like a little hamster is doing the install 😆 It's kewl you got some help & definitely appreciate the shout out for the daughter ha Are you also replacing the package tray 6×9s & the dash 3" ( i think it's a 3)? 😁 I think for my Fusion, I want to install either Infinity Kappas, or Infinity References. Not sure, though.

I completely agree. That wiring harness makes the job much easier. I was going to replace the 3” tweeter, but the housing is very specific, and would take a lot of custom fab work to get it to fit. Plus, the tweeter still sounds good. I don’t have 6x9s in my car. The grills in the back are vents for the battery (plug in hybrid). I wish I did have some 6x9s! I could really make it thump with a nice amp.

What you see falling out of the door was the surround on the speaker that had totally deteriorated. It wasn’t the clips. When I pulled that first door off, I thought it was the clips too.

hi i have an issue with the stock speker system is it normal in all of them that front plays louder than the rear speakers even if centered i feel a lot les power and they seem to be more quiet ....did You have the same feeling ..many thanks

I didn’t use a screwdriver. I just pulled firmly after all the fasteners were removed. The plastic tabs holding the door released with a good tug.

For the back speakers, I had to cut off some plastic tabs that were conflicting with the speaker body. Once the tabs were removed, the speaker sat flush with the mount.

I didn’t replace the tweeter. It was still in good condition, and it would have been more challenging. The tweeter couldn’t be easily swapped out.

I had to drill a hole in the side of the new housing to feed the electrical cable through. The original housing wouldn’t work with the new speakers. Screw pattern and detailed dimensions were not the same for old and new speakers.

I don't believe so, I have a 17' Fusion, essentially exactly the same audio. The speaker & mount are one assembly. That's also why Crutchfield is super awesome as they supplied the adapter mount & that wire pigtail to still be able to use the factory connector! 😎 I saw another vid where someone separated the factory speaker from the mount, but didn't show how. Either way, the speaker was somehow cut out from the mount, & he did that, so he could still use the factory connector for the newer speaker. So, in this vid, Crutchfield supplied an adapter & a pigtail to use for the factory connector. In the other vid I saw, he just got the new speakers, cut out the factory speakers from their mount (which has the harness connection point as part of the mount housing, all one piece, no disassembly without modifying the whole mount) & soldered the new speaker terminals to the factory connecting point. Way more involved, but still not crazy difficult. Also though, cutting the factory speaker out to use the mount, means you're not reusing the factory speaker! It's either destroyed, or you're going to destroy it to use the mount. Crutchfield way, with supplied adapter & pigtail, you can still put back on the factory speaker for whatever reason later down the road. Oof, sorry, ramble done 😆

The stock stereo drives the speakers with no problems. I did not install a separate amp. I was a little concerned about this before the project and thought I might add an amp, but after the speaker install, I felt the quality was good, the bass response was good, so decided not to add an amp.

Stock radio, No static noise. Audio quality is good. The next step up in audio quality would be an additional amp. That would give some better mid and low range response.

Two different sizes. It’s 7mm at the bottom of the door. I think it’s 5mm inside the door.

The rear and front speakers are the same size but not the same type. The rear speakers have the integral tweeter and the front speakers have the tweeter separated.

The speaker sits behind a molded plastic grill that is integral to the door panel. The only way to remove the speaker is to remove the door panel.

Would the back speakers behind/above back seats also be 6.5 inch speakers?

My car doesn’t have speakers behind the back seat. There are vents for battery cooling that look like speaker grills, but no actual speakers there. The only rear speakers are in the back doors. If you have a car with rear speakers behind the seats, I would guess that they would not be 6.5 inches, which is a traditional door speaker form factor.

Aaahhhh, I thought you had those as well. Yup, they are not 6 1/2s. If there are speakers there, they are 6×9s. For the Fusion, anyways. I have a '17 with essentially the exact same audio, just 3 more speakers. Two 6×9s in the package tray (behind rear seats) & I think a 3" speaker in the top center of the dash.

The wiring harness was provided by Crutchfield. It came with a connector that matched the speaker. The connector is a push on style, no crimp or solder needed.
