I think it would be good for context: ✨ English: +20 years, ✨ Spanish: +20 years, ✨French: about 10 years, ✨ German: 2.5 years, ✨ Italian: 2 years, ✨ Portuguese: 1 year, ✨ Catalan: about 6 months, ✨Russian: 2-3 months

Right!! I feel like more polyglots should focus like her on learning the languages more in depth. I don't have any problem with people who dabble languages, but I feel like you get more satisfaction and enjoyment from the language, when you learn it in depth.
@TipoQueTocaelPiano
@TipoQueTocaelPiano 3 жыл бұрын
@@AfroLinguo You definitely get more satisfaction from mastering a skill. Having to second-guess yourself at every step is not usually enjoyable. In classical music, for example, nobody cares how many instruments you play; what matters if how well you play them. I don't mean there is no utility in speaking languages superficially, but I have the impression that people are missing out on the greatest value of speaking multiple languages. It allows you to expand your thinking and have different world perspectives; you acquire several phonological and grammatical systems plus separate vocabulary databases, which improves your cognitive flexibility. If you speak each language with your pet phonology, random grammar and a poor vocabulary, the only benefit you get is to be able to communicate with more people in a very superficial way.
@AfroLinguo
@AfroLinguo 3 жыл бұрын
@@TipoQueTocaelPiano Exactly. One really misses out on a lot of the cultural and less superficial aspects of the language, when one doesn't learn it in depth.

I think it is super brave of you to make a video showing yourself speaking in so many languages. As someone who has learned German to a C1 level, I think you should work on it before picking up Russian. German is pretty difficult, but Russian is incredibly difficult (I've also studied Russian at university and am currently studying Serbian). You seem to still really be struggling in German with accent, cases, tenses, syntax, vocabulary, and other aspects of grammar, which I understand because it is your first non-romance language. But you will only struggle even more with these aspects of Russian. As someone with lots of experience in German and Slavic languages, it will be a massive asset to you to gain an advanced level in German before moving onto a Slavic language like Russian, because German cases are much easier to learn than Russian cases. That's my advice, should you wish to take it. All the best!

I am a portuguese living in Spain. I have been learning french (B2) and german (B1) for the last 2-3 years. Here in Spain they have public schools for adults where you can learn languages and its very cheap. Its really nice. When i reach B2 in german i want to learn Italian, that should be fast/easy. Then i want to go for the long marathon of Mandarin Chinese and eventually Russian. A long way to go. But theres no rush with language learning :) Good luck with your language learning. That was a great video Karen! I think 1-year-update videos are a great way to see how much progress you've really made and how you've grown not only as a language learner, but also a person in general. I think you gave some really good advice when you said that you still want to keep improving your Spanish despite being a native speaker. Russian is my native language but I moved to Germany when I was a kid, so my Russian isn't super perfect. Like with you and Spanish, I do speak it fluently and without mistakes really, but vocabulary is something I need to work on, so your video motivated me to keep working on my mother tongue! It was also great that you spoke all those languages in this video, so I intentionally turned off the subtitles to see how much I'd understand and to check my current level on all these languages, and I did better than I thought 😂 Anyway, great video, and best wishes for your Catalan and Russian language learning journey!

Thank you! Yeah, I think that yearly update is something doable and something that gives you guys a glimpse on how much someone can learn in a year, so glad to hear that you thought it was a good idea as well 😁. In terms of Spanish, I have learned so much new vocabulary since I added it to my flashcard folder. I think you'd be astounded how much you can learn in your native language. Also, I think it's so fun since it's relatively easy for me to learn new words and improve my other skills in it. Anyway, thank you so much for your comment glad you hear you liked the video ✨

So for Arabic,I want to reach beginner advanced and really start to express myself clearly and less pauses. French - learn the basics. And how to introduce myself. Spanish- really want to see how much I can learn . So really no specific goal but just go for it and immerse myself in it. Turkish- learn how to introduce myself and pick up vocabulary.

Acredito que o refinamento do seu sotaque virá quando você falar com nativos com bastante frequência, como o uso do "ã" mais anasalada ou uso de expressões como "cometer erro" no lugar de "fazer erro". I'm learning English and Spanish. In English I think I'm in the upper intermediate level, at least in listening and Reading. In Spanish I might be in the level B1 or B2, I started Spanish over 1 month ago, but I'm a portuguese native speaker, Spanish is much easier than English, Although now I understand more English than Spanish. I'm not good in making friends, that's why I end up not practicing speaking skills through conversation as much as I'd like to, neither in English nor in Spanish.

Catalan belongs to the gallo-romance and occitan-romance branch of the western romance languages, not to the ibero-romance one (Spanish, Galaico-portuguese). Maybe you would get better results if you approach it with a mindset more similar to the French than to the Portuguese.

Having a life is just doing what you love. Some people like traveling, some people like working (like my father who loves his job so much that he works and christmas and new years) and she loves learning languages. I think learning languages makes her enjoy life more, so she should learn as much as she wants. I am sure that you also have hobbies that your friends or family think are a too much.
