I am a native Spanish speaker who started speaking English at the age of 33 because I moved to the US. I am still learning, and feeling this journey will never end. I was especially moved by that question of you "Do you translate in your mind?" because that is was I use to do, but not anymore, and noticing once again by watching your adorable granny, makes me feel so satisfied. I am far from being an advanced speaker, but I'll keep trying.

Looks like she and Nathaniel's mum may have had kids pretty early. She's quite young and this can help things along. My Grandma is more like 50 years older than me, not 40. It makes it a lot harder to translate things across. Culturally, I mean. Even if we engaged in our mutual interest in sewing together, we'd be doing totally different projects in parallel. Feels like there's almost no hope really so I don't punish myself for it.

Being a beginner in the polyglot world (I only speak 3 languages fluently, I’ll get on more in the future!) this was so fascinating for me to see (for the second time). I even realized that I can pretty much understand Italian and a bit of Portuguese. But what’s also amazing of becoming a polyglot, is that you can show your values through these languages, because each one of them will focus on some specific point that allows to show a certain personality trait! And as I told you once Nathan, it’s so cool to hear that you have an Argentinian Spanish because it reminds me of my family that’s there!

I think he has a very slight foreign accent when he speaks Spanish. His French sounds 100% native to me but that's probably because my own French isn't super good so I just don't detect his accent.

I'm Brazilian, so I'm a native Portuguese speaker. I've been studying English for a few years and now I study French. But for being a native portuguese speaker, I could understand Italian quite well and Spanish is really easy to get it. I think this is magic about the Latin Languages. I want to learn hebrew in the future because of my religion. I think your gramma is so badass and cute :) Muito obrigada por aprender meu idioma, você está se saindo incrivelmente bem. Don't worry, a lot of people can't even speak a second language! But it's the same for me, I'm struggling with my third language (Japanese) and I'm not committing enough to really improve. I'm thinking about moving back to Japan though, that would certainly help. 😁

I think it might be a thing: your second language takes ages to come, but it will eventually come up and you're not even noticing And when you get fluent at your second language, you head to your third one It seems incredibly harder!! You wanna learn it as soon as possible But after all, are you learning it because you want it by heart/need it, or are you just collecting languages?? I often question myself

I just love the part when your grandma talks about how she feels like she “belongs to the culture” in the different languages she speaks. It‘s so true! Thank you! When I was in Brazil I spoke my own homemade Interlingua (it's an actual cool thing; google it) made of 2 very different dialects of Italian and the Spanish I knew. People treated me so much better because I made the effort!!! Judging from what other people have told me of their their trips to Brazil, I think I had a totally diff'rent exp'rience because I made the effort to communicate with people.

Nathaniel's grandma also has the advantage of speaking Argentinian spanish which includes italian and french words because of lunfardo. So the whole video just flows so smoothly from one language to the other. Love to hear him speaking argentinian too.

well, as someone who took latin for six years in secondary school: latin isn’t easy especially if you’re not familiar with romantic languages (eg french, italian) and come from an english-speaking background due to the complex grammar and cases etc. as well as the fact that it is a dead language so you learn it more passively as you cannot really interact with other people

Have a look at the book "Lingva Latina per se illvstrata" by Hans H. Ørberg. It teaches Latin in a very natural way by total immersion. I am currently learning French. I am struggling with it. But I was able to (mostly) understand the french parts of this video. It always boosts my confidence when this happens. As grandma said: Everyone can learn a new language. It is just a matter of time and effort. (Though, I may add, it may be hard if you can't find a learning method that suits your personality.) Ether way, in the end you _will_ succeed with perseverance.

I’m only bilingual but I was taught both languages as I was learning to speak, so both come naturally to me in the same way. I just know it. I really wish I spoke more languages to that level, but hoping to build on the French I took in high school and uni. Love these videos, I am awestruck! 🙏🏻
