I speak conversational Japanese and am very very white. I was at disney world in the Japan section of epcot (for any who dont know they hire native speakers in all the world market shops so I knew the girl behind the counter was native Japanese). I started ordering my food in Japanese and she says "I'm sorry? What was that?" In English, so I start over still speaking Japanese and she says "I'm sorry I'm not understanding you." Again in English. I try one more time in Japanese and her eyes go wide and in Japanese she says "wait, you're speaking Japanese." I respond in Japanese "I am." She stays in Japanese and says " ok please order again." That time she got it.

Years ago my coworker and I went abroad to Sweden for 2 weeks to work, he is from the Basque country and speaks Basque (Biscayan and standard) and Spanish. We were on road trips across the country and ended up listening to Disney soundtracks and having singalongs. He told me that Phil Collins did the soundtrack to Tarzan in Spanish which blew mind. We also then learnt that he also did them in German, French, Italian and Latin American Spanish (alongside Spanish Spanish aka Castillian). Later one I put one of these Spanish versions on and it wasnt until like almost 2 mins in that he realised, whilst singing along that it was the Spanish one ❤

So when I called to speak to him, the Father of the family answered...and didn't understand a single word I said. He then proceeded to yell to my brother "Jayden San...English" and handed the phone to my brother. I died of shame 🫠

Basically all of these were eradicated by the British (or French), but they managed to barely survive. Britain stayed here for 800 years with some of the worst repression of all time, and multiple genocides committed, like the famine of the 1840s which our population still hasn't recovered from.

I don’t know about him personally, but I’m told it’s mostly taught in schools and only the primary language in some western counties, including Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Mayo, and Cork. English is the main language in most of the country but they are trying to keep Irish alive in schools.

@@leticialy1 “Irish” is a completely different language from English called Irish Gaelic. There is also Scottish Welsh and Manx Gaelic(which is dead). Although(because of England) English is the primary language in all these places, the languages are still spoken and at least in Ireland many towns speak it primarily and it is taught in school.
