My dad's american and had to learn french when he married my mom and moved to La Ville de Québec. Technically Cap-Rouge back then. He spent 9 months in intensive classes and to this day, his vocab is impressive for someone who only lived 3 years in Quebec. Nobody really cares about his accent because he's fluently conversational. It'll take time to get the whole masculin/feminim thing down, but don't worry too much about it. You're doing just fine. The good news is that now you have real maple syrup for your failed pancakes!

When your boyfriend said "Déjeuner c'est pour le matin", it reminded me of the confusion I had when I moved to Canada as I had learnt French in France. He is right but not quite at the same time because it depends on where you live. People tend to forget that the real struggle between Canadian French and standard French is not the accent, it is the vocabulary difference and the misunderstanding that goes with it. In Canada "déjeuner" is indeed breakfast but in France they use "petit-déjeuner" because "déjeuner" for them is actually lunch. Same for "dîner" which is either lunch or dinner depending on where you live. Same with all the words/expressions that Canadian use but French don't ("magasiner", "achalandage", "cueillir un paquet", etc.) or that don't mean the same ("dépanneur" => convenience store in Canada, a garage in France).

@PPN462
@PPN462 4 жыл бұрын
@@leahsfieldnotes Yes also I was just reminded that somewhere in the video you used the word "une camisole" when talking about your shirt. The misunderstanding can go the other way too, you may not want to use that word in France as that word has a completely different meaning there, it refers to the straight jacket used to immobilize violent patient from hospital/asylum. In standard French, they use the word "un débardeur" or more colloquially "un marcel". Your friends in Canada may tell that "un débardeur" is someone who works at the dock but that is not the expression that French people use for this kind of job and you are stuck in an endless loop of confusion. Anyway the struggle is very real 😂

This was actually really helpful to watch because I know and understand most of the words you say but with how I’ve learnt them (through Duolingo), I’ve learnt each word by itself and not in the context of sentences and conversations so it’s interesting to see how each word flows onto the next which gives me a better understanding of the language. It also helps test out my listening comprehension, because it’s one thing to read and write and even say the words but it’s another thing to try to keep up with listening to a conversation when you’ve had not practice doing so. So thank you so much for this video, it was super helpful :)
