Pronouncing the Norwegian 'g' as a Dutch 'j' works miracles in understanding the language, from a Dutch regional (Nedersaksisch) perspective. Jij / You -> Jeg - Mij / Me -> Meg. Even 'du' (you) is quite familiar. We say 'joe' (Drenthe) or 'doe' (Groningen). (Pronounced in English as 'dou'.) Gå is also quite similar as that's how we pronounced it as well, with just an additional 'n'. (Goan. Compare English 'going'.)

I speak englisch, german and dutch. I have no idea about swedish, but I also think some of the pronounciation is very similar to dutch, BUT sometimes with a complete another meaning. For example: Jeg (I) sounds similar to the dutch Jij (you). The sound of the "u" is similar to dutch, so it doesn't seem to be hard learn. I will struggle with the trilled r.

I was surprised to find out that some of the spoken Norsk I was actually able to understand (granted it wasn't 100%) in Norsk and didn't have to translate mentally.

Great course. First time watcher and first time listener to norwegian here. Fascinating how the teacher is switching from perfectly pronounced english to norwegian. Till now I would've thought to not be able to understand a single norwegian word. But look at what I found out... Hope it survives the formatting: Norwegian: Subjekt i en setning er en person eller ting som gjør handlingen. English: The subject in a sentence is a person or thing doing the action. German: Das Subjekt eines Satzes ist eine Person oder Ding, das die Handlung ausführt. Dutch: Het onderwerp in een zin is een persoon of ding dat de actie uitvoert. GoogleTranslate said "som" means "as" so "som gjør handlingen" would mean "as doing action" which I don't quite get. The first half of the sentence is pretty similar in all 4 languages. The last half differs in the position of the words where "doing" would be "ausführt" (also tun) or "uitvoert". Nevertheless the above comparison made me think that every speaker of one of the 4 languages would have a field day with learning one of the others. Edit: I often see dutch citizens speaking german but my impression is we germans seldomly try to learn dutch. I think I'll try it since I'm not far from the border to NL and after that it will be norwegian Edit 2: Certainly with the help of this very comprehensible course. Just wish the norwegian translation would follow the english version, since english speakers would know what to expect and could derive norwegian words better.

Which Norwegian? We have about 200 dialects. This is the Oslo dialect. Move away from Oslo, and things start to get very very different. In Norwegian, a dialect is not just a tone of voice. The words can be different. And to make it even more complicated, there are two different written forms.
