I paused the video, put Онука on my Ukrainian playlist, and walked away to do chores with the playlist on random. I later heard some magnificent music and thought, "What is going on in my room right now?", and it was Онука!

@8:35 In Spanish, we have a similar pair of words: comadre (f.) and compadre (m.). 😊

In Italian, it's "compare" and "commare", but I don't think they're still used in their literal sense... to me they sound more like old people in the village might refer to their equally old friends (but I've lived out of Italy most of my life and mostly speak English, so advance apologies to any Italians who may read this and have different associations with those words). "Gaffer" and "gammer" have the same original meaning, but aren't used much anymore, as far as I know. It's nice that Urkainian is holding on to the meaning and usage of these words.

It's so good to see you again, Inna! You look very well, thank God for your good health, my dear. And it is so lovely to see that precious gift that the soldiers on the frontlines sent to you - how beautiful and thoughtful of them to do this! Yes, they all definitely need our continued support and help, now more than ever. Thank you so much for this video, I hope it helps many people. I've been creating my family tree for my Ukrainian family, which I can add to the English side of my family... that side is massively extended, and I really look forward to the day when I can have such names of my extended family in Ukraine on this tree too.

Дуже дякую Інна! Thank you very much for giving us names for all of these relationships! There is one area of relationships where I am still very confused. You mentioned the second and third cousins, but why did you never mention first cousins? You began to describe a relationship of first cousins, but you never actually said that term. I’m wondering if perhaps the terminology is different enough in Ukraine that maybe you call second cousins what we call first cousins? In English, someone is our First Cousin if they are the child of one of our parent’s siblings. Therefore we share grandparents. This is our FIRST Cousin, whom it is illegal to marry (at least in the US!). In my family this person is almost like a sibling. We are very close, we grew up across the field from each other, and more cousins were down the road just a bicycle ride away. We were constantly back-and-forth at each other‘s homes. You mentioned Kuzina, (which is also the German word for a female cousin) and the word Kuzin, but you did not put them in the list nor show us the spelling. I wonder if these are the terms for first cousin? Or are they merely alternate terms for any cousin in Ukrainian? Please help me understand so we can use the correct terminology in my family. Дуже дякую, і Слава Україні! 💙🙏🏼💛🖖🏼🇺🇦🫡

in my family we usually just say brother or sister for any type of cousin First Cousins legally can't marry in UA

@@anhelina2726 Thank you so much for adding these facts, Anhelina. Yes, my female cousins in UA and I, have always called each other sister "сестра"... And "сестричка", which is the more familiar term (of endearment), the same as when one might say, "sis'" or "sissy" in English. My very close Polish friends and I have called each other sister or brother too. Also, many close friends on KZbin in either English, Ukrainian, or Polish. Saly being one of our close online KZbin family will know this already)

Привіт! I suggest a slight correction. Двоюрідна сестра/двоюрідний брат should be translated first cousins. A little bit of confusion with the element “двою” - two. Is “шваґер” and “швагерка” acceptable in Ukrainian for brother and sister in law? I always enjoy your lessons. Дуже дякую!

Kym/Kyma make sense, but the cousins didn't quite. 2nd cousins (in the English speaking world, at least) means two people have a common (great) grandparent; your parent's sibling's child is just 'cousin' or 'first cousin.' Also, in my father's language, we distinguish aunt's and uncles based whether they're blood relatives or relatives by marriage. Like my dad's sister would be 'ameh' to me, but his brother's wife would be 'zanamu' (literally, 'uncle's wife'). I know Hindi has a TREASURE of family designations based on marriage, from which side of the family they're from, etc. Way too complex for my American brain 😵

Inna: Thank you for making your videos and posting them on KZbin. I have been learning Ukrainian for the last year through another source but certainly do not speak it. Now that I have a small base I have started looking at your videos. I wanted to point out what looks like an error. At 7:45 you give the word for cousin, двоюрідний брат, but you called it second cousin. I checked with a translation app. and it confirms my statement. So what you call second cousin is first cousin or just cousin, and what you call third cousin is second cousin. I think the number shift between Ukrainian and English tripped you up. No worries, I was able to figure it out. I checked again with my translation app and second cousin came out as троюдний брат but second cousins came out as двоюднI брати. So even the dictionary is somewhat confusing.

Things can change overnight however should you want thrm. As with things begin in a new day at dawn.. Wishing your family together again in all best shapes and form. As is my task such as yours, the language and our zeal, over conquest. For everyman I know, we share that principle. Live for Ukraine and what is it glory if not might. Till oneday we live again anywhere. But stamp out the invder, free us from the deliqiescy of mankind. To host a future, we ripen cerivvick. And still such a complex language. A sovereign one. 🙏
