There are very few channels which discuss a safety plan. It's similar to the weather, it can kill you if you don't know the situation and have a plan. 1. know the situation, 2. keep your OPSEC, 3. have a network of security. 4. know the law and resources, 5. have a physical plan like ring camera, lights, voice commands, etc 6. Don't get drunk enough you can't respond effectively. 7. This is not a movie, take a reality check, DEI is not there, if you're a single female you are in danger. Wake the F up!

As a circumnavigator and boat builder I totally agree with your sentiments and advice. Any cruiser out there is a floating ATM as far as the locals are concerned. We took our brand new 15 Hp Honda outboard and punched a hole in the cowling, did a rudimentary fiberglass repair and painted it different colors with rustoleum- it looked like shit and that was the whole point( nobody stole it). We never wore ” logoed “- hats or other gear ashore and of course had a fictitious name for the dinghy. We had infrared motion detectors and bars for all our hatches and were always back on board before sundown. We had numerous “weapons on board” - use your imagination-and most importantly we avoided countries that were known hotspots for crime as much as possible.After 5 years we made it unscathed but we have friends in our group who weren’t so lucky !! One final note, with AIS today even though sailing videos are not usually in real time for safety reasons( especially when there are hot bikinis on board). All the bad guys have to do is look on AIS!! Turn it off at anchor and before arrival!

Chris - great advice. To re-enforce your advice about dinghy names - I leave a dinghy for 6 to 10 weeks at a time close to my holiday mooring and yacht. Of course it is not named, it’s anonymous. I found leaving it for that time the seat and oars would go missing. I got into the habit of deflating the dinghy, banning the oars and the seat in a bin bag and covering it with mud. I also befriended some live aboards - I have now stopped being a victim. Those Spear It Annimal guys need to heed that great advice - love the bear mace too. My yacht locally has a walk through transom but is on a marina finger under cameras my yacht on the mooring does not have that but is covered in bird netting. It is difficult to get aboard. Nobody has tried yet but I like the idea of the camera and the lights. Another great video …

I am not sure, yet it seems that "Raf" the captain or co-captain of his boat and his viking woman are pretty fast and can handle themselves. THAT said, I think they realized they were in way over their heads and yes, they were drinking - alot and yes they are young and kind of _dumb_ and yes Sascha went total Viking on the locals - which is always a bad idea. Raf had some buddies back him up, which likely prevented a catastrophe. Chasing Latitudes is correct, if they were a bit more low key and a little less "blah, blah, this is my boat over there - we are not in it and we never lock anything up! blah, blah, blah" with the locals - all of this may have been avoided. Also funny about the DNA test... yes, NEVER give anyone your DNA. It is yours, never theirs. Even if they have a legal agreement to never give out your information - it can always be hacked and often it is hacked! YT, pitch the craziest items, sometimes. Maybe they should have had a spot for ring cameras!

@@DementatDeus -- yet it is their island and who knows what neighborhoods they were in. Not saying it was justified at all, yet precautions are always a great idea. Charge your valuables inside! Lock your doors, companionways, etc... Do not advertise or volunteer information that can give others opportunities like this. Talk to and hang with other tourists or cruisers. Have fun chatting with locals, yet keep certain details to yourself. I have not traveled as much as Chris, yet he makes some great points. Also, these islands are lovely and all places have their bad spots, places you should not go to and people really need to "read the room" or the neighborhood. Probably one of the worst places I was stuck in was SE DC, after a BMW smashed by car and the Sun was going down. Nobody freaked out and we eventually all got towed ... yet I was not trying to take pictures, beyond the damage to my car. Also, I was poor an my car looked like it came out of a Mad Max movie. No rust, though a few different colors of primer, was probably why nobody freaked out! The attorney who hit my car really stood out, though he left right after the cops let him go. I was not looking any of the natives in their eyes - unless they spoke directly to me. Even the SWAT car was being honked at, until the large and strong officer got out and stared the impatient driver down. Yes, she was a bit entitled or late or who knows... The cops just wanted to make sure nobody was injured and we were all on our way out of the zone! Every place has bad places... and if you are new or never been or are drunk or whatever - you may not realize the sling or casket you are putting yourself and/or those around you - into!

Hey Chris....I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. They were EXTREMELY lucky. A couple of things....I was concerned about safety when chartering out of St Lucia. I wanted to bring pepper spray with me. After a call to the consulate I was told pepper spray was not legal in St Lucia. Great. Last year while chartering in Grenada, our boat was not fully cleaned at the appointed time. We were told to leave our luggage and we would do the captain brief on the boat next door. Ok....Moorings crew onboard, should be safe. Wrong! We get back, to find Angel's bag had been rummaged and $300 was gone. The base was upset, cops could give a shit, she was out $300 bucks. ( Can't trust ANYBODY) Crime crime and more crime sadly...dinghy thefts out of control in the Windwards. Since we left Grenada, a couple were killed on their anchored boat off of Grand Anse Beach by a couple of escaped prisoners. Yea, I think it's a grand idea to go chase some local bad guys into their island hood for a scooter...NOT!

Great article. I spent time in West Africa. Nothing like being w/ in a small village where the average per capita GDP is $500 and someone in your group pulls out a $2000 camera and starts taking pictures without asking. Now do this coming from a $300,000 boat. We are guests in these places. Be humble and smart. I never had any problems in W. Africa but didn't look for any either.

How’s, love to hear you talk about it from your perspective, being that you are a delivery captain, as well. They did a live update, that I think is available to rewatch. The boat had problems, the captain took a weird route, the boat got beached and now another brand new boat that got wrecked video. After 3 it stops being a coincidence. (In most cases) I’m definitely waiting on an update to find out what “really” happened.

Just about everything you say here is almost word-for-word what I was hearing in my head when I watched the episode in question. To think what might have happened, all because of a scooter...wow. I guess it got them views, so, whatever. One of the best bits of wisdom I've heard from the world of cruising is, when in a foreign port, when asked by a local about your situation, to drop the name of some vessel you have seen in the anchorage and marina that is big, expensive, and fully crewed... tell them you came from that boat. Tell them there are always three big guys on watch, all ex-military. Etc.

People from 1st world countries need to understand that 1. these places often dont have police / justice system that will actually go after robbers and alike unless they get caught red handed. Like literally with bloody hands. Its the same in places like the PH or TH. 2. Going after a group of guys for something like a scooter is asking to end up dead in a ditch. These guys hanging arround in those little shops sometimes have no jobs. No perspectives to get an own house or business or well paying job and certainly no 500000$ boat. They mind even be drunk or on other drugs. Probability is high that these guys have ZERO things to loose in their life. And I mean ZERO. They dont care if they slice you open to help out their friend you just pushed of a scooter. Their life mind even be ending up better with a year or so in jail. Than some air headed tourists come along and want to teach them a lesson on their island?? No wonder people end up dead. Tourists need to be aware of the wealth gap.

And despite bad reviews, official warnings and scary YT videos, there are always tens of thousands of clueless, naive, entitled, drunken ding dongs flocking to these islands every season, making a spectacle of themselves and not taking basic security measures. @@SpearItAnimal Chris IS hilarious. I very much enjoy his videos. Actually you SHOULD do a follow up video because you guys DO come of as being irresponsible ( being polite). I was gonna say NUTS! :) I know you know that you guys shouldn't have done what you did. Lesson learned hopefully and your video did raise awareness of how easy it is to get set up by local crooks. You were very lucky not to have been hurt or worse. On a brighter note....I think you guys are great. I totally respect your handyman contractor skills and Sasha's work ethic. You guys busted your asses on the refit and Sasha was right there with ya.....totally unafraid of getting her hands dirty. Best to you both.
