Nice video, it's really important to share this information! Can't find this on the internet normally. I strongly agree with the starting off with threeprong. It forces you to study and observe the fish and become a better diver overall.

I’ve been spearfishing with a pole spear and 3 prong all my life. I haven’t shot any BIG Pelagic fish but it does wonders on moderate sized sea bass, flounders, barracuda and snappers. Nice trick rolling the spear...can’t wait to try it! Mahalo...

Definitely stalking tactics. I'm out in the Mediterranean so there's not as many reef/cave fish, and man they're so hunted here that when they see a diver they shoot for the deep water.

Divng equipment are expensive these days along with new regulations on safety items you will also need before you get in the water which strongly agree to. you know when i first started diving when i was about ten. my first spear gun was made out of a thread spool powered by rubber bands and a spear made out of a straighten out metal clothes hanger. and it worked! speared a lot of fish with it eg. mannini,aholehole, menpachi,aveoveo,kumu along side the reef in kewalo basin.

this was quite good. Short, concise, you articulate well, and the music is not a distraction. I personally would add that a pole spear teaches you the mechanics of spearfishing better. I think you have to be both a better diver and a better shot with a pole spear; spearguns can,,, let you get away with things, where as a pole spear will not. Also, as you said pole spears are much cheaper than the cheapest speargun, until you know that you like to spearfish, but also that your body allows you to spearfish, don't spend a ton of money.

As a beginner, even with all your equipment and tools that you have ,you would still need to know your prey. Its not as easy as you think. You would need to learn to stalk your prey. You do this by stealth, patience,cunning and even being sneaky. You need to learn the characteristics of the prey you're stalking like a lion in the wild . Some fish will run, some will swim into a hole or cave when stalked, some already lives or dwells in a hole or cave, and some swim in the open. the difference between the 3 prong vs distance and securing your catch because of the barb on the tip of the spear.For fish that swim in the open beyond 3 prong range, a speargun would be your weapon of choice, for all others the 3 prong will do the job I don't think it matters which one you chose as long as you follow safety procedures, however generally one would start with the 3 prong its much more fun and easier to learn. Only time and practice will make you a good diver, longer breaths, deeper depths comes with experience, eventually you will get there. Know your limitations to prevent accidents and follow safety procedures.

Do you think I would be able to shoot a California Halibut with a 3-prong?
@ernestocreto16895 жыл бұрын
three prong spear is no ka oi and much more fun and easy to master.. a spear fisherman will be able to catch what he needs and most importantly become a true sportsman of spear fishing. It,s the guy behind the spear that makes the dive successful and experience will get you there. speargun? took out an 86# Ulua with one well placed shot to the head which immediately paralyzed the fish, no need to brain it with the divers knife(never carried or used one). Remember, Always aim for the head in the area just behind the eye where the fish brain is located.

How about a video on how to aim with the 3 prong? I've been searching and can't find a decent one.
@ernestocreto16895 жыл бұрын
FYI Your aiming point when spear fishing is the area just behind the eyes where the brain is located. This is the "sweet spot". Hit it right, . the fish will become instantaneously paralyzed. Be patient, let the fish make the moves for you or jockey yourself into position to make that kill shot. By using this technique you will have a better looking stringer than if your shots were made into the body of the fish where there is a lot of body damage to fish(ripped up flesh and torn up gut shots like you see in some of these videos) Anybody can make that body shot. Show your skill and true sportsmanship. Have you ever watch a sniper movie? You're the "sniper, one shot one kill. The head shot int the military is called the "hollywood shot" that's your goal, instant kill. Don't come easy but time and experience will get you there. You'll be the ace of the base!
