Hello, Jess and Michael this is an open question to you and all your subscribers and watchers. I know I’m going to receive some negative comments to this question however it’s a legitimate query to all liveaboards (mainly aimed at Cats but also curious from the Mono owners out there). I also understand it’s a hypothetical (at this stage) however I truly believe it is fast approaching becoming a reality. if a renewable energy (solar, electric, hydrogen ? - i.e. non diesel) boat could get you as far as the current ‘sails’ what would your next boat be - and would you consider a “sail-less” boat. Now I know there are people out there that love to sail - I totally get it (this question is not for you) however watching most of the common channels I do wonder if the actual ‘sailing’ part is as enjoyable as depicted and if ‘sailing’ inhibits you from enjoying other things (ie being able to go somewhere that the wind won’t let you (at that point in time)). Think about having the ability to choose windless or calm weather windows, point straight, possibly quicker passages, no mast/sails/rigging (maintenance, possible failure, costs), the boat liveability (if it didn’t have to ‘sail well’), overall stresses on the boat, maintenance, etc. I’m probably 6 years off (I’ll be a ‘fit’ 64) and have my eyes on purchasing a Seawind 1260 or 1370 ($$$) and looking to initially circumnavigate Australia and then possibly onto South Pacific and then who knows so ‘range’ is definitely a huge consideration (this is not just a day-tripper coastal question - a true long term liveaboard). I’m looking forward to your (constructive) thoughts (either positive or negative).

Hey Tim thanks for the interesting question! Originally sailing for us was just a way to get the range and affordability to get to remote dive spots, we did however come to love the sailing side of it also. I look forward to the day when a boat can be run on renewables like you’ve mentioned, on calm days or days when the wind is on the nose it would be amazing. Even without the need for sails I think for a remote cruising boat you’d be disadvantaging yourself without them. The redundancy of having something relatively “basic” and easier to troubleshoot at sea is invaluable. I also believe a sailboat in rougher weather handles better than a powerboat and the sails not only provide a bit of lift easing the slamming but the boat also goes with the conditions rather than power against them. Motor-sailing is much more efficient and comfortable than just motoring. Ultimately I think a hybrid electric sailboat would be our dream setup. Cheers, Michael.

Yep reading through all the comments (yep posted this question around a bit) the resounding response is some sort of a mix (and keep the sails). The announcement of The Wynns getting the HH44OC seems to be a brilliant combination of electric / diesel / sail and has really made me rethink my 1260/1370 choice. Argh - so many (huge dollar) decision that (these days) you need to make years in advance. Hey if ever in Syd and need crew for a day or so happy to help out. JB really did look amazing and right on our doorstep.

Cheers Tim, will have to check out the HH44OC! At the end of the day there is no such thing as the perfect boat, you can always save another $10k to get that bit better boat, but time waits for nobody, get the best boat you can afford in reasonable time and you’ll never regret your decision. A 1260 or 1370 would be a great boat for what you want. Probably will be awhile till we’re back down south. JB is a great spot, cheers!

Funny, I was going to go with a seawind 1600 shortly. One of the things that has put me off is about a five year waiting list (at least on the 1600). Same as a few of the other popular Performance Cruising Cats. To answer your question, its not really possible to go electric only , and probably wont be for some time without at least 1 Reasonable sized (18KW) gensets. However, electric and sail is possible, its just still not really brilliant without again, at least 1 Gen backup if your going to go blue water, or if you get little to no sun. I know this is an old post (10 months) but look up Elcano Challenge (in particular a guy named Plukky (Peter) - youtube channel "Sailing into freedom"). He's an Australian Structural Engineer and self confest Caveman. His goal is to design an Aluminium Cat (about 50' foot based on the 48' Mumby design) to be affordable to use Sail and 2x20KW electric motors able to circumnavigate the world. He is also looking at a 55' and a 65' version. Fast, Safe and capable. The Elcano challenge he is taking up is to circumnavigate the world without using fossil fuels. If you haven't already, look him up. Also several diesel electric hybrids are now available where you can run a diesel engine and have an electric motor hanging off 1 or both engines. Even a merry mix of both is viable now, but I cant say I like the idea of one electric and one diesel, or some uneven combination (IMHO)... but as they say, not such thing as a perfect boat, there are always compromises. Also going above 20KW electric motors (48VDC and 26hp) means going up to 144VDC and that becomes awkward/inefficient for power distribution throughout the boat, requiring lots of DC to DC converters etc. Oh yeah, one more thing - I would not even think about Hydrogen power for a boat. Far too dangerous IMHO for a boat. I personally dont even want any propane on any boat I might own.

Many years ago I spent a couple of nights at anchor in Jervis Bay. Had a dive down to check the anchor and came across a hell of a lot of oysters sitting in the sandy mud. After shelling most were as big or even bigger than a cigarette packet. Bloody beautiful.

Great video peeps that looks like a lovely place to anchor , with cryovac by mouth technique if I have fishy bait to seal in the zip lock fill a bucket with water leave one end of zip lock open and slowly lower bag into water , the water pressure forces the air out and you won’t feel like you making love to a dead fish , also bought a washing machine and couldn’t be happier with it , it’s a sphere 3.3 kilo

We get a lot of good snapper around JB aria with soft plastics. One day 3 of us where using bait and one bloke was using soft plastic and he caught 2 massive snapper and no one else got shit .

Get black magic snapper snacks they work the best for smaller eating snapper and I use soft plastics like Zman DieZel minnowz paddle tail for bigger snapper keeping it couple of metres of the bottom.. Black magic you use any bate and sinks to the bottom and sinker depends on conditions of current. :)

Catching Snapper, I dont know about NSW, but in the North of WA the best bait believe it or not is NW Blowie (strips from its flesh). Thats the big blowie that between 500-700mm. Not sure if you get the equivalent in NSW (probably too cold), but they surprisingly enough, they really do work well in WA from Shark Bay up.

Cheers Louis glad you enjoyed it! I have heard about the worms etc but never seen or encountered it myself. We always take care of the fish and get it chilled asap. You do the the odd fish that something doesn’t look right, weird legions or actual worms and we won’t eat it. But usually we just go with if it looks alright it is alright attitude.

The best snapper marks are outside the heads . There is no way is spearfish out around tge heads ive had great white bigger than my boat come right up to the boat. More than a few times hahaha

Always eating well Keith! The spears we use don’t have removable tips except on the big guns with the slip tip’s, even then we don’t unscrew them to pull the spear out. Usually just spinning the shaft on the way out keeps the floppers shut, worst case we can unclip the line and pull the spear all they way through 👌

I've heard some people like the belly on a fatter model, and then other just use the shoulders, both say don't use the other - I get confuse easy so I basically just use any of the left overs from filleting. pls help

Haha thanks Frodo, we eat most of the fish ourselves and sometimes share some with friends and family. Both disciplines take practice hard to really say what you’d have a better chance of catching a feed with so many variables.
