It looks more like Long Island, east of New York City proper, still a cool video. I spearfish in nyc. These days with the 28-31 inch legal slot I pass on striped bass, unless there is nothing else. My favorite fish to spearfish here are bluefish and sheepshead. They are both much faster than striped bass. I could get a striper almost on every dip. But it is challenging to assess the size. Bluefish are great raw. They are much faster than striped bass. Sometimes they follow them. They also grow faster and live shorter lives. But they migrate south when the water gets below 15 degrees. Or so. It is hard here without a boat as here so much the coastline is private, or for residents, with hard to get permits. It is so bureaucratic. There is a lot of fish, but little access. Also boaters do not always respect or are aware what a dive flag is. It is also awesome to see large stingrays, sand tiger sharks. And the large schools of striped bass.

When I first saw the video I thought "Wait a second, that's illegal!"....but then I saw your disclaimer that this video is from 2017. I used to go Striper fishing all the time in Montauk and caught many 60 pounders...One fish would literally feed a whole neighborhood....our boat captain/crew were the best in the business and by the time we got on the dock we had 100 pounds of perfectly filleted Striper in bags buried in ice, which we then shared with all of the neighbors. Over the last three years, the rules/regulations limit keepers to a very narrow length of 28-36 inches (slot size) and the rest get released. I'm all for conservation, but I'm just pointing out that now, when you go to places like Montauk where the monsters converge, you're basically practicing Catch and Release fishing......The other thought I had was "Damn, we are the Great White nursery of the Northeast, all the blood in the water makes me nervous!"....Maybe having White Pointers lurking in the depths will make this Australian guy feel more at home!

@anthony22bob5 ай бұрын
@@Spearfishing-Downunder Can't say for certain, but I will add that they were caught trolling, usually as you make the bend around the Montauk Lighthouse, and they were landed very quickly. No fooling around. We hauled them on board with a giant net (no gaffe obviously), marveled at their size and immediately released within minutes. They took off like torpedoes as soon as they hit the water, so I imagine they did just fine. Also, as most fisherman will attest, if you're using light tackle and taking forever to land the fish, then the fish will experience tremendous stress. We used heavy tackle, heavy deep sea fishing gear, and got the job done. I miss those days!!

It wasn't always that way. The Hudson River used to be very polluted and the Stripers were on their way to being wiped out by the commercial fishery. Rules and regulations were eventually changed, the river was looked after and they rebounded nicely. Fall is primetime in New York and New Jersey. The Stripers go ballistic feeding on the big migratory bunker schools. Fishermen wait all year for the fall blitzes.

Cheers mate, our species similar to your Drum actually have a release Mortality close to 100% as the suffer from Barotrauma so Catch and Release is counter productive and slot limits just don’t work

Striped bass have under 10% release mortality. Lower with quick release. These are old fish at that size. The population issue is a shortage of young fish, stocks are forecast years out. I've caught dozens of slot and overslot fish this year and not a single underslot, it's concerning. I live in and fish NYC, this also isn't NYC. It's the east end of Long Island if not Rhode Island waters. Don't mind that this is pre regulation footage but be accurate... these fishing spots are several hours from NYC and slots for striped bass are necessary. They're our only inshore trophy fish and highly highly pressured.

@@break0nthr0ugh I spearfish in nyc. I see a lot of under slot stripers. I see some very large ones. I now prefer to take bluefish and porgies, which are a lot more challenging. Stripers only when nothing else is around. With blackfish they seem the most common and abundant fish, so I do not really understand why they are so regulated. I find them also really easy to take spearfishing. The biggest challenge is assessing the legal size. Bluefish swim a lot faster and never stop. Porgies and sheepsheads are way more skittish and nervous and you can’t get them as close.

@stefpix I don't disagree. But the young of year they are concerned about are not just under slot they're the ones that aren't even schoolies yet. I haven't caught one under 16 inches in a couple years now.

Stripped bass a migrating fish the head north to Canada then come back down.Thats one thing good with the USA the fish regulations are so strict that’s why fish industry here is so healthy

This was obviously in 2017 long before the Slot change and the fishery was already incredible. I wonder what difference the Slot size has made and I also wonder about the release mortality on these large fish when C&R, similar fish here have really high release mortality. But even 30% release mortality means a session where a fisherman catches and releases 10 fish they have killed same number as we did. Been some incredible research done here in Aus recently filming fish swim off strongly and then die on the bottom filmed with drones

@@Spearfishing-Downunder I see so many striped bass and blackfish when I spearfish in nyc. But they are so regulated. When the season open for blackfish I see only the small ones in shore. The large ones go off shore in deeper water. I believe commercial fisheries have less limits on stripers. For me the most fun fish is the bluefish. And I got once a Spanish mackerel but saw them only once in the water. Also striped bass meat does not conserve well even if frozen. The grey Triggerfish has really good meat. It is not regulated, and some take too many. They are too easy to get spearfishing and I see less and less. I wonder how it can be assessed the mortality of catch and release fish. Where I go spearfishing there are many anglers. Rarely I see dead fish at the bottom. An issue is the fishing line left in the ocean when the hook gets stuck on the mussels beds.
