Speargun Trigger mechanism

Construction of a prototype speargun trigger mechanism, using common garage tolls, all parts were made from aluminium because it´s easier to work with, however I strongly advise that no trigger mechanisms should be made from aluminium because it may not be safe!
The final trigger will be made from 316 grade stainless steel.
In this video you can also see a simple improvement that i made on my very small drill press machine to eliminate the play from the quill.

guys i made a speargun, and a speargu mechanism based on the design shown in the video. Thank you very much for this video, couldnt have designed mine without it. I dont have a video of mine of anything, only photos, but if anyone needs help, feel free to ask me questions as well. Btw the mechanism is fully functional, able to safely hold a spear in as well as fire it command. I havent had a single jam or anything using this design, very good design. credit to MrMyvids4you

Great tutorial with some very useful ideas, I know you said that you are going to use different materials for the real one but it may be worth stressing that alloy would not be suitable incase someone makes one up.

And can you make the stainless steel 5mm trigger mechanism with the same tools you show in the video or do i need something stronger. beacuse i have all of those but i also know stainless steel is thougher speaccilly for filing down

Hello Mrpopov, for this prototype i used aluminum becase is easy to cut. For the real trigger never use aluminium it will not be safe! The best material for a speargun trigger is titanium because will not rust, the problem is that titanium is very difficult to machine, but if you have access to an EDM wire cutting machine than use it. Use stainless steel, will be rust resistant, and not to difficult to machine with common tools. Thanks for the comment. And good luck for your project.

I advise to never use aluminum for a trigger mechanism it won't be safe, I like your idea about the bronze, not just because corrosion, but maily because the low friction and wear properties, the best will be making the trigger from bronze and the sear (the piece that holds the spear) from stainless steel.

Hello Rober M, I want to finish this spearguns project first, before making it available. I designed this trigger mechanism using a Cad program (Google Sketchup) The only dimensions that I can provide are: The trigger housing dimensions= 13x30x65mm, wall thickness: 2mm, the Trigger and Sear= 5mm thick. All made from 316 stainless steel I´m very confident about this design, but I need to field test it, over along period of time before making it available. Some of my channel viewers told me that is possible to take "screen shots" from some of my videos and then using scale to get the right sizes. Trigger and sear will be five millimeters thick, and will be made of stainless steel. On this trial i used 2mm thick aluminium, if you are making any type of trigger don´t use aluminium, it will not be safe!
