You can allow a half and half. Half of the businesses will be permitted for those who are already established while the other half to be set aside for the upstarts of color and by color (I mean blacks and not front companies.) As you are all well aware, those who will be coming in to reap the benefits from the sale of marijuana will not be black. And the greater proportion of those jailed for marijuana, a recreational drug that should have never been illegal, is black. If you know your history the war on drugs was created to vilify black people during the Nixon administration. A white person arrested for cocaine received a lesser sentence than a black person for weed. And weed is listed as a schedule 1 drug while cocaine is listed as a schedule 2 because blacks are more apt to purchase the less expensive drug even though cocaine is addictive and causes people to act out violently. I implore the board not to allow people who under any other circumstance, will not put a foot in our village except to make a living. Please do not allow these established companies to come into our village and monopolize the sale of marijuana, as this is what it sounds like is going to happen or is in the works already. There should also be a caveat stating that the companies coming in must hire from within our community. Depending on the size of the business from 2 to whatever number. This can and has been done. Otherwise again, we can purchase but can't earn a decent wage. Look out for us as you would your children. I also commend trustees Henyard for her input and House for his take.
