If the Tories are the largest opposition party but the minority of the opposition seats, can the Lib Dems and others form a coalition opposition? Is that constitutionally a thing?
@finger3181
@finger3181 2 күн бұрын
No, but opposition parties often vote together to defeat the government. But if the Lib Dems are the main opposition, I can't see them ever joining the conservatives. They did once and it finished them as a party for years. Can't see them doing again
@tonysadler5290
@tonysadler5290 2 күн бұрын
They could form a coalition, but it's a stretch to claim to be the largest opposition party, however it would be up to the Speaker to recognise who commands the support of the largest opposition group - under this arrangement they might just swing it. I recon either way it'd would be challenged in the court - therefore I think the court would decide it's up to the Speaker.

In the halcyon days of my preteen innocence, our junior school mock election was far more important than the real thing. Anyway, we were sure that the country was bound to follow our well reasoned campaign speeches. Imagine our shock when the 60 percent win by Jo Grimond in our school vote in 1959 wasn't emulated the next day nationally.

Washington like Sunderland is in Wearside, not Teesside as Jon mis-spoke I'm afraid - that sort of thing matters up here (where we often feel overlooked or under-favoured for our neighbours on the Tyne and Tees) which is why there's so much rivalry over even seemingly minor matters like getting the vote counted quickly) ).
